Chapter 2

Author: Sesame King
Willa returned from abroad two years ago.

It was two weeks before my first pregnancy.

She and Ian had grown up together, and their parents had once been close.

When they were children, everyone assumed they would marry someday.

Then Willa went abroad, and Ian met me at university.

We dated for seven years and had been married for four.

Before she came back, I never thought her name could threaten my marriage.

Ian picked her up from the airport himself the day she returned.

He didn’t get home until eleven that night.

A small patch on the shoulder of his shirt was damp, as though someone had cried against it.

When I asked about it, he said Willa had just divorced and was upset.

A few days later, Willa came to our home for the first time.

I had just learned I was pregnant but hadn’t told Ian yet.

She stood in the living room and stared for a long time at the plans for our empty nursery.

"Are you planning to have a baby?"

"We have been for a while," I said with a smile.

Her face went pale.

The cup slipped from her hand and shattered, cutting her ankle.

Ian rushed over almost at once and picked her up.

I had never seen him so alarmed.

He carried her to the hospital without even looking back at me.

That night, he told me Willa had lost a pregnancy abroad. Complications from the surgery made it unlikely she would conceive again.

"She can’t bear to hear about babies right now. Don’t bring up children in front of her again."

I still hadn’t told him about my pregnancy, and I thought he was far too worried about her.

Three days later, I put a pregnancy test with two red lines in front of him.

He stared at it for more than ten seconds.

I thought he was too happy to speak.

Then he hugged me and said softly, "How did this happen so suddenly?"

I laughed and gave him a playful swat. "We’ve been trying for six months. What’s sudden about it?"

He said nothing more.

The next day, the first silver lock charm appeared outside our front door.

At daybreak, Ian acted as though nothing had happened and went with me to my prenatal appointment.

The doctor reviewed the results and spoke gently.

"The baby’s heartbeat is normal. Your progesterone is a little low, but it isn’t serious."

"Since you’ve had two miscarriages, take your medication on schedule, rest in bed as much as possible, and avoid getting upset."

She prescribed two boxes of white progesterone tablets and explained the dosage.

Ian listened even more carefully than I did.

He noted the medication, dose, and times on his phone. He even asked whether missing one dose would be dangerous.

As we left the exam room, he put a hand on my shoulder.

"Everything will be fine this time."

I looked up at him.

There was worry in his eyes, and exhaustion too.

I had loved that face for ten years.

I knew exactly how his brow furrowed. I also knew he rubbed his index finger when he lied.

Now that finger brushed the edge of his phone again and again.

"How are you going to investigate the third charm?" I asked.

"I’ve already contacted building management."

"And after they check?"

"We’ll see what they find."

"What if they don’t find anything again?"

Ian looked up sharply."You didn’t ask me here to give me another chance.""No."I looked at him."I wanted you to know Willa wasn’t the one who caused my miscarriages.""She was cruel and selfish. She used her pain to control you.""But you were the one who put the tablets in my hand. You were the one who stopped me from calling the police, changed my medical records, and shut off the cameras.""She said she couldn’t live, so you sacrificed my babies to keep her alive.""You were the one who killed them. It was you all along."Ian seemed to lose all his strength. He slowly sank to his knees in front of me.People in the café looked over.He no longer seemed to care. He gripped the edge of the table."I was wrong. I know I was. I’ll do anything you ask.""I’ll go to prison. I’ll give you my life. Just please don’t hate me."I looked down at him.Once, I couldn’t bear to see him upset. When work went badly, I stayed up with him. When his stomach pain flared, I drove out in the middle of

My voice stayed calm.I sounded as though I were telling someone else’s story. But beneath the table, my nails dug deep into my palms."The second time, I told no one I was pregnant. Yet you told Willa the day you got my test results. She broke down on the phone, and you promised her again that there wouldn’t be a baby.""Hugh put the second charm in the nursery. You changed the medication again. I started bleeding before I fell in the bathroom.""But you made everyone tell me I’d lost the baby because I was careless."At that, I could no longer keep my voice from shaking."Ian, do you know how I lived that year? I was afraid to shower, to go downstairs, even to walk alone.""Every night, I dreamed of the blood on the floor. I asked myself over and over why I couldn’t protect my baby. And you knew the truth all along.""You watched me blame myself. You watched me go to therapy. You watched me kneel in a chapel and pray for the child we lost. Not once did you tell me it wasn’t my fault.

Ian didn’t sign the divorce agreement right away.He stayed in the small town and waited outside the apartment complex where I lived every day. When it rained, he stood at the entrance with an umbrella. When I went to the hospital, he followed at a distance. When my nausea got worse, he sent me bland meals through someone else. I sent them back untouched.A month later, my lawyer told me the police had formally obtained the relevant records.Hugh could no longer withstand the pressure. He admitted Ian had ordered all three silver lock charms.Hugh left the first one outside our door. The second time, he entered the nursery under the pretense of checking the windows. The third time, he shut off the cameras and handed the charm to Ian.Hugh only bought the medication. Most of the time, Ian was the one who put the tablets in my pill organizer. My lawyer asked if I wanted to hand over all the evidence at once."Wait a few days," I said.I wasn’t having second thoughts.I wanted to tell Ian

Willa stared at him."You’re telling me to get out? Because of Nina? She’s already gone! She’ll never forgive you!"Ian stood, his voice hoarse."I said get out."Willa broke down too."Why are you blaming me? You changed the medication yourself the first time. The second time, you told Hugh to deal with the cameras.""All I did was cry a few times and say I couldn’t bear to see you two have a child.""You couldn’t bring yourself to divorce her, and you couldn’t bear to let me die!""You thought you could keep us both. Now you’ve lost everything. Whose fault is that?"The house fell silent.Ian looked at the charms on the table, bent over, and retched. But nothing came up.For the first time, he understood that the two miscarriages he’d dismissed as "the past" had torn open a wound in his life that would never close.Three months after I left, Ian finally found me in a small town in the south.I had just finished a prenatal appointment and was leaving the hospital. My belly had begun t

Ian came home at ten that morning. He hadn’t slept all night. He stayed at the hospital while Willa had her stomach pumped and returned only after her condition stabilized. He expected to find me waiting on the sofa for his explanation, as I always had before, with oatmeal ready for him.But when he opened the door, the house was dark and silent. The housekeeper was gone.Half the walk-in closet was empty. All my skincare products had disappeared from the bathroom. He stood in the bedroom doorway and stared at my ring on the bedside table for a long time.Only when his phone slipped from his hand did he seem to wake. He rushed into the living room. The three silver lock charms lay side by side on the dining table. The first, the second, and the third.Their silver surfaces reflected his pale face.I had signed my name at the bottom of the divorce agreement. He called me.The first time, my phone was off.The second time, it was still off.He tried another number and discovered that I h
