Chapter 3

Author: Sesame King
Ian stopped walking.

"Nina, the most important thing right now is keeping this pregnancy safe. Leave everything else to me."

On the way home, he took a call.

The number had no name attached.

After the caller said a few words, he instinctively lowered the volume.

"I can’t talk right now. Did you take the medication?"

A woman’s voice carried through the phone.

I couldn’t make out what she said next, but I heard her call him "Ian."

No one at his company used his name so familiarly.

Ian ended the call soon afterward.

I looked out the window and pretended I hadn’t heard.

At home, he sorted the medication from the hospital into a pill organizer.

He filled the morning and evening compartments and labeled them with the times.

He worked carefully, as though he’d done it many times before.

"I have something to do tonight. The housekeeper will make sure you take your medication."

"Is it work?"

"Yes."

"Who called you earlier?"

His hands paused.

"The project manager."

"A woman?"

"Nina."

He closed the pill organizer. "Don’t start suspecting everyone because of a charm."

I gave a small smile.

"I only asked a question."

He seemed to realize he’d overreacted. He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

"I’m sorry. I’ve been exhausted lately. When things settle down, I’ll spend more time with you."

At ten that night, another call came, and he hurried to leave.

Before he went, he poured me a glass of warm water and placed a tablet in my palm.

"Go to bed after you take it."

I stayed where I was after the door closed.

The tablet he’d given me was pale yellow.

But the tablets the doctor showed me that morning were white.

Moments earlier, I’d tucked the yellow tablet under my tongue and pretended to swallow it with the water.

Ian waited until he thought I’d taken it before picking up his car keys and leaving.

When his footsteps faded near the elevator, I rushed to the bathroom and spat the tablet into a tissue.

My saliva had dampened it. Its edges had begun to dissolve, leaving a faint bitter taste.

I opened the original box of medication from the hospital.

Every tablet left inside was white.

Then I opened the pill organizer Ian had filled.

The morning compartments held white tablets. The evening compartments held yellow ones.

My hands began to shake.

This wasn’t one tablet put in the wrong place.

Someone had deliberately replaced all the evening doses.

And since we came home from the hospital, Ian was the only person who had handled the pill organizer.

During my first pregnancy two years ago, he sorted my medication too.

I was so sick then that he placed each evening dose directly in my hand.

During my second pregnancy, fear kept me inside the house most of the time.

He put all my pregnancy medication in an organizer and watched me take it every day.

I used to think that was love.

Now those gentle moments felt like invisible hands closing around my throat.

I messaged my college friend Sophie Quinn.

She worked at a pharmaceutical testing lab.

I sent her a photo of the tablets and asked if she could help identify them.

Sophie called almost immediately.

"I can’t tell from a photo. Bring me the tablets tomorrow. I’ll have someone analyze what’s in them."

She paused, and her voice grew serious.

"Nina, you’re pregnant. Don’t take another tablet unless you know what it is. And don’t tell anyone about this yet."

Ian looked up sharply."You didn’t ask me here to give me another chance.""No."I looked at him."I wanted you to know Willa wasn’t the one who caused my miscarriages.""She was cruel and selfish. She used her pain to control you.""But you were the one who put the tablets in my hand. You were the one who stopped me from calling the police, changed my medical records, and shut off the cameras.""She said she couldn’t live, so you sacrificed my babies to keep her alive.""You were the one who killed them. It was you all along."Ian seemed to lose all his strength. He slowly sank to his knees in front of me.People in the café looked over.He no longer seemed to care. He gripped the edge of the table."I was wrong. I know I was. I’ll do anything you ask.""I’ll go to prison. I’ll give you my life. Just please don’t hate me."I looked down at him.Once, I couldn’t bear to see him upset. When work went badly, I stayed up with him. When his stomach pain flared, I drove out in the middle of

My voice stayed calm.I sounded as though I were telling someone else’s story. But beneath the table, my nails dug deep into my palms."The second time, I told no one I was pregnant. Yet you told Willa the day you got my test results. She broke down on the phone, and you promised her again that there wouldn’t be a baby.""Hugh put the second charm in the nursery. You changed the medication again. I started bleeding before I fell in the bathroom.""But you made everyone tell me I’d lost the baby because I was careless."At that, I could no longer keep my voice from shaking."Ian, do you know how I lived that year? I was afraid to shower, to go downstairs, even to walk alone.""Every night, I dreamed of the blood on the floor. I asked myself over and over why I couldn’t protect my baby. And you knew the truth all along.""You watched me blame myself. You watched me go to therapy. You watched me kneel in a chapel and pray for the child we lost. Not once did you tell me it wasn’t my fault.

Willa stared at him."You’re telling me to get out? Because of Nina? She’s already gone! She’ll never forgive you!"Ian stood, his voice hoarse."I said get out."Willa broke down too."Why are you blaming me? You changed the medication yourself the first time. The second time, you told Hugh to deal with the cameras.""All I did was cry a few times and say I couldn’t bear to see you two have a child.""You couldn’t bring yourself to divorce her, and you couldn’t bear to let me die!""You thought you could keep us both. Now you’ve lost everything. Whose fault is that?"The house fell silent.Ian looked at the charms on the table, bent over, and retched. But nothing came up.For the first time, he understood that the two miscarriages he’d dismissed as "the past" had torn open a wound in his life that would never close.Three months after I left, Ian finally found me in a small town in the south.I had just finished a prenatal appointment and was leaving the hospital. My belly had begun t

Ian came home at ten that morning. He hadn’t slept all night. He stayed at the hospital while Willa had her stomach pumped and returned only after her condition stabilized. He expected to find me waiting on the sofa for his explanation, as I always had before, with oatmeal ready for him.But when he opened the door, the house was dark and silent. The housekeeper was gone.Half the walk-in closet was empty. All my skincare products had disappeared from the bathroom. He stood in the bedroom doorway and stared at my ring on the bedside table for a long time.Only when his phone slipped from his hand did he seem to wake. He rushed into the living room. The three silver lock charms lay side by side on the dining table. The first, the second, and the third.Their silver surfaces reflected his pale face.I had signed my name at the bottom of the divorce agreement. He called me.The first time, my phone was off.The second time, it was still off.He tried another number and discovered that I h
