Chapter 1

Author: Mister Rhapsody
The foul, decaying odor made my stomach turn instantly, but everyone else acted as if there was no smell at all. How could Leonard Chester, my son, not even notice it?

Leonard asked, "What brings you here, Dad? You see, my roommates have been looking after me just fine. I'll be returning to university in a few days anyway, so there's really no need for you to come see me."

I was still in a daze when Leonard came up to me and took my bags. He said I didn't need to visit, but I could see the emotion in his eyes. I'd always been too demanding of him, which had strained our relationship, but I knew he desperately wanted me to acknowledge him.

His roommates were also very welcoming and invited me to join them for pizza-and-beer night.

I knew that if I kept quiet about the foul odor coming from Leonard, I could avoid offending them and keep things good with everyone. I'd died accidentally after an argument with them in my past life, so I decided to be patient this time and investigate the smell without provoking any disputes.

The next morning, I went straight to the hospital for a checkup, which showed my sense of smell was perfectly normal. I even conducted several more tests to make sure I could smell the same things as everyone else. In other words, the odor had to be real.

I was the only one who could smell the odor, while Leonard and his roommates couldn't smell it at all.

I decided to test their sense of smell, so I immediately bought perfume, fermented herring, ripe blue cheese, and a few other strong-smelling things. I placed each of them in a separate corner of the house.

I soon realized, however, that Leonard's odor had already spread throughout the room and covered up all the other odors. There was no point in continuing the test. They wouldn't notice anything I'd hidden, even with normal senses of smell.

Just as I was about to retrieve the items and arrange them all in one place, Leonard suddenly rushed out of his room. "What's that awful smell, Dad?"

I was instantly overjoyed. "Can you smell it too, Leonard?"

Leonard furrowed his brows. "It's so bad I can hardly breathe. How could I not notice the smell?

I quickly grabbed Leonard by the shoulders, intending to take him to the hospital to find out the source of the odor. I'd reached an age where I no longer dwelled on many things. I just wanted to make peace with Leonard and repair our relationship.

Leonard suddenly shoved me aside, marched over to the corner, and pulled a box of ripe blue cheese from behind the curtains.

He shot me a reproachful look and said, "You know how much my roommates care about hygiene! Why did you hide a box of ripe blue cheese here? Do you want to attract some mice?"

I hadn't even had a chance to reply when Leonard's roommates returned from their classes. They covered their noses and grimaced in disgust as soon as they entered. They found everything that I had hidden within two minutes.

"We've been respectful toward you, so we'd appreciate it if you'd do the same for us. If you want to stay here and look after Leonard, then stop bringing these awful-smelling things into the house!"

I was instantly overcome with unease. What on Earth was happening? How could they not smell the foul odor, no matter how strong, yet smell a jar of fermented herring that hadn't even been opened?

Seeing that I had truly guessed everything, Leonard's roommates turned pale with panic. But since they'd go so far as to kill someone, they weren't the type to stay shaken long. They quickly recovered and pointed at me while threatening the cleaning lady. "You'd better remember this. He's crazy. "You didn't find anything suspicious here or smell anything foul. If you say otherwise, I'll make sure your whole family suffers!"They looked at me again and laughed mockingly. "You lunatic! Go ahead and call the police! We're not afraid of them. We have evidence that you're mentally ill! Do you have any evidence that we murdered your son? "Oh, I almost forgot. Your son gave us a lot of money before he went missing. He really was a good person! If you reunite with him after you die, make sure you thank him for us!"Their flippant, mocking tone filled me with overwhelming anger and grief.I couldn't hold back my grief as I asked, "Why? Why did you have to kill Leonard?"They didn't ans

In that instant, everything became clear to me. I'd fallen right into their trap from the very beginning. Those four roommates had taken hold of Leonard's phone after killing him and faked the appearance of him still being alive. Then they got rid of his body and erased all evidence of the murder.I wanted to surprise Leonard, so I waited until I reached the train station to tell him I was coming. I ran into a ride-hailing driver who offered to give me a discounted ride. I wanted to get to Leonard as quickly as possible, so I got in the car without thinking much of it.In the car, I suddenly felt dizzy and drifted off to sleep. I felt terrible when I woke up. It seemed the driver had been bribed too. I'd been drugged while in the car, and it had caused me to hallucinate. I missed Leonard so much that I "saw" him when he didn't exist and smelled an "odor" that wasn't actually coming from him.My sense of smell was fine, but my mind was messed up, which was why the "odor" on Leona

In that moment, I finally realized the truth. Leonard was dead. He was no longer here, and I was the only one who could see him. Leonard's roommates had forgotten to fill the cleaning lady in on that detail, and that slip-up was what blew a hole in their lie.The cleaning lady panicked and lunged for the door to escape, but I grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back. The next instant, all four of Leonard's roommates charged at me. "You crazy bastard! It's bad enough that you keep harassing us, but you are giving the cleaning lady a hard time! We had no idea you'd called her over. How could we have paid her off in advance?"I gritted my teeth and roared, "Why did you rush back here at the cost of missing class if you really had no idea that I'd called the cleaning lady? I'm guessing you installed quite a few hidden surveillance cameras in the house, didn't you? "You've been spying on everything I do! That's how you knew I'd called the cleaning lady and where I'd hidden those

I had barely finished speaking when someone knocked at the door. I opened the door, revealing the cleaning lady who had come by earlier that day. I'd paid her to come back.Leonard's roommates immediately lost it. "You fucking lunatic! What the hell are you trying to pull here?"If you insist on saying there was an odor in the house, we accepted that too. You searched inside and out of the place behind our backs, and we didn't argue much either—we just drove you away!"You've checked everything, and there's nothing to be found. You even said that the smell you kept complaining about was gone. What's the point of calling the cleaning lady here?"I waited until they had finished shouting before speaking calmly. "The smell in the house is indeed gone, but the smell coming from Leonard is still there."By now, not just the roommates, but even the cleaning lady had reached her limit. "I doubt there's anything wrong with your nose. I think there's something wrong with you mentally. Your

I had figured everything out by then. I knew what was behind the foul odor and why no one but me could detect it. I'd also confirmed my suspicions, but for Leonard's sake, I couldn't tell anyone yet.I visited Leonard's university first and talked to some of his classmates. They said Leonard was kindhearted and would set aside some of his allowance to help children in impoverished areas who couldn't afford an education. As I was leaving campus, a timid young woman gave me a small box and asked me to deliver it to Leonard. "I made this gift for Leonard myself. I hope he'll be back on his feet soon."I asked, "Why don't you hand it to him yourself?"The young woman replied, "Leonard's leg isn't healed yet, so I didn't want to go look for him. I'm afraid he'll move around too much."I accepted the gift and nodded. "I'll make sure Leonard gets it."I wandered around for a while before returning to Leonard's rental after dark. I knocked, but when his roommate saw me, he immediately tr

Leonard's roommates snapped. "You're a madman! Who else could it be if not you? We've been living just fine until you showed up! You've been looking for trouble ever since you got here! "You even sneaked into our rooms and searched through everything without our permission! Do you understand how serious your actions are? We could report you to the police and have you arrested!"They became even angrier. They gritted their teeth as they cursed at me, dragging me toward the door by my collar with all their strength.I refused to leave, fighting them with all my strength as I stared coldly at each of their faces. "Did I start trouble? I brought you all gifts on the very first day I arrived. I kept quiet about the awful smell in this house just to maintain a good relationship with you. I even covered your food and everyday expenses!"But the moment I proposed cleaning the apartment, you all reacted so strongly and cursed me out. You're desperately trying to get me out now!
