Chapter 2

Author: Mister Rhapsody
If our senses of smell were all normal, then the problem had to be the smell coming from Leonard. This bizarre situation was so unsettling that I couldn't stop worrying about his health.

The next day, I ordered an extravagant meal from a steakhouse, uncorked a bottle of pricey vintage bourbon, and gave each of Leonard's roommates an expensive gift.

Once I'd completely won them over, I brought up the matter in a friendly way during dinner.

"I bought those smelly things today because I found traces of rats and wanted to draw them out and eliminate them. If it's okay with you, I'd like to hire a cleaning service to clean the entire place from top to bottom tomorrow while you're at classes.

"I'll pay the full bill myself, and I'll cover everyone's food expenses for the next month too—"

I hadn't even finished when one of Leonard's roommates slammed his fork down. "If you have something to say, just say it. There's no need to put on this act."

In that instant, the other roommates' expressions grew colder, too.

"I know, right? I know you're from a well-off family and think this place is beneath your standards, and that you feel like your son is suffering by living here, but we didn't force him to stay. You're free to move out whenever you like!

"We may be poor, but we keep our place clean! Why would we need the whole place cleaned?"

In response to his roommates' cutting remarks, Leonard flushed angrily and rushed to clarify. "I don't look down on any of you! I'm not planning on moving out, either!"

He then turned to me and yelled, "If you think this place isn't good enough, then leave! I'm not as picky as you are! I really do like it here! I'm happy living with my roommate, Dad!"

I was utterly confused. I had no idea why they were reacting so strongly. I'd been friendly the whole time and had even prepared gifts for them beforehand.

Under normal circumstances, they shouldn't have confronted me so openly, even if I'd genuinely looked down on the place. I had even used the rats as an excuse and didn't mention the foul odor at all.

I couldn't shake the strange feeling that something was wrong. I had to consider the possibility that Leonard and his roommates were intentionally concealing something.

"Why did you all overreact when I suggested a thorough cleaning? Please tell me the truth! I'm your father, and no matter what has happened, I'll be understanding."

I planned to have an honest, heart-to-heart conversation with Leonard once I returned to the bedroom.

In my past life, the awful smell coming from him hadn't improved at all after he took a bath, which was why I'd hired a cleaning service to thoroughly clean the place. Yet, they'd reacted as if they'd lost their minds and killed me on the spot.

Having lived through both lifetimes, I was almost certain they had hidden something in the house that they didn't want anyone else to find.

"What are you talking about? Do you think we're hiding something from you? Is that why you think we won't let you bring in a cleaning service, Dad?"

Leonard gave a furious, mocking laugh. "You've developed a prejudice against me since I didn't get into a prestigious university and disappointed you, huh? I know I'm not smart, but I've done my best! If you don't like having me around, then just go. Leave me alone and stop interfering with my life!

"You see, my roommates may be average university students you look down on, but we get along really well! Please stop making them uncomfortable and ruining my friendships!"

I never expected Leonard to react so strongly. His words cut deep, stabbing me in the heart.

I'd set high expectations for him and been too strict in the past, which had affected his personality, but I'd already recognized my mistake and was doing my best to make things right. How could I possibly look down on him?

I was just about to explain myself when a sudden chill ran down my back. I cried out, "What exactly happened to you, Leonard?"

Seeing that I had truly guessed everything, Leonard's roommates turned pale with panic. But since they'd go so far as to kill someone, they weren't the type to stay shaken long. They quickly recovered and pointed at me while threatening the cleaning lady. "You'd better remember this. He's crazy. "You didn't find anything suspicious here or smell anything foul. If you say otherwise, I'll make sure your whole family suffers!"They looked at me again and laughed mockingly. "You lunatic! Go ahead and call the police! We're not afraid of them. We have evidence that you're mentally ill! Do you have any evidence that we murdered your son? "Oh, I almost forgot. Your son gave us a lot of money before he went missing. He really was a good person! If you reunite with him after you die, make sure you thank him for us!"Their flippant, mocking tone filled me with overwhelming anger and grief.I couldn't hold back my grief as I asked, "Why? Why did you have to kill Leonard?"They didn't ans

In that instant, everything became clear to me. I'd fallen right into their trap from the very beginning. Those four roommates had taken hold of Leonard's phone after killing him and faked the appearance of him still being alive. Then they got rid of his body and erased all evidence of the murder.I wanted to surprise Leonard, so I waited until I reached the train station to tell him I was coming. I ran into a ride-hailing driver who offered to give me a discounted ride. I wanted to get to Leonard as quickly as possible, so I got in the car without thinking much of it.In the car, I suddenly felt dizzy and drifted off to sleep. I felt terrible when I woke up. It seemed the driver had been bribed too. I'd been drugged while in the car, and it had caused me to hallucinate. I missed Leonard so much that I "saw" him when he didn't exist and smelled an "odor" that wasn't actually coming from him.My sense of smell was fine, but my mind was messed up, which was why the "odor" on Leona

In that moment, I finally realized the truth. Leonard was dead. He was no longer here, and I was the only one who could see him. Leonard's roommates had forgotten to fill the cleaning lady in on that detail, and that slip-up was what blew a hole in their lie.The cleaning lady panicked and lunged for the door to escape, but I grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back. The next instant, all four of Leonard's roommates charged at me. "You crazy bastard! It's bad enough that you keep harassing us, but you are giving the cleaning lady a hard time! We had no idea you'd called her over. How could we have paid her off in advance?"I gritted my teeth and roared, "Why did you rush back here at the cost of missing class if you really had no idea that I'd called the cleaning lady? I'm guessing you installed quite a few hidden surveillance cameras in the house, didn't you? "You've been spying on everything I do! That's how you knew I'd called the cleaning lady and where I'd hidden those

I had barely finished speaking when someone knocked at the door. I opened the door, revealing the cleaning lady who had come by earlier that day. I'd paid her to come back.Leonard's roommates immediately lost it. "You fucking lunatic! What the hell are you trying to pull here?"If you insist on saying there was an odor in the house, we accepted that too. You searched inside and out of the place behind our backs, and we didn't argue much either—we just drove you away!"You've checked everything, and there's nothing to be found. You even said that the smell you kept complaining about was gone. What's the point of calling the cleaning lady here?"I waited until they had finished shouting before speaking calmly. "The smell in the house is indeed gone, but the smell coming from Leonard is still there."By now, not just the roommates, but even the cleaning lady had reached her limit. "I doubt there's anything wrong with your nose. I think there's something wrong with you mentally. Your

I had figured everything out by then. I knew what was behind the foul odor and why no one but me could detect it. I'd also confirmed my suspicions, but for Leonard's sake, I couldn't tell anyone yet.I visited Leonard's university first and talked to some of his classmates. They said Leonard was kindhearted and would set aside some of his allowance to help children in impoverished areas who couldn't afford an education. As I was leaving campus, a timid young woman gave me a small box and asked me to deliver it to Leonard. "I made this gift for Leonard myself. I hope he'll be back on his feet soon."I asked, "Why don't you hand it to him yourself?"The young woman replied, "Leonard's leg isn't healed yet, so I didn't want to go look for him. I'm afraid he'll move around too much."I accepted the gift and nodded. "I'll make sure Leonard gets it."I wandered around for a while before returning to Leonard's rental after dark. I knocked, but when his roommate saw me, he immediately tr

Leonard's roommates snapped. "You're a madman! Who else could it be if not you? We've been living just fine until you showed up! You've been looking for trouble ever since you got here! "You even sneaked into our rooms and searched through everything without our permission! Do you understand how serious your actions are? We could report you to the police and have you arrested!"They became even angrier. They gritted their teeth as they cursed at me, dragging me toward the door by my collar with all their strength.I refused to leave, fighting them with all my strength as I stared coldly at each of their faces. "Did I start trouble? I brought you all gifts on the very first day I arrived. I kept quiet about the awful smell in this house just to maintain a good relationship with you. I even covered your food and everyday expenses!"But the moment I proposed cleaning the apartment, you all reacted so strongly and cursed me out. You're desperately trying to get me out now!
