Chapter 400

Author: Flower Sock
Anathea didn't remember telling Evangeline what had happened to her. She wondered if Gregory had briefed Evangeline on her behalf, but she didn't press Evangeline for answers and instead called Hannah.

After Gregory brought Anathea home that morning, she had no idea how Hannah and Chloe were doing.

Hannah didn't pick up until about a dozen rings later. Her voice sounded on the other line. "Is everything alright, Thea?"

"I'm sorry I didn't call you sooner. Are you and Chloe okay?" Anathea asked, worried that Gregory might have flown into a rage and lashed out at Hannah and Chloe for helping her escape. "Did Gregory give you and Chloe a hard time?"

"No, Chloe and I are fine, don't worry," Hannah reassured her.

"Thank goodness," Anathea replied with a sigh of relief.

"If everything's fine, I'll hang up now." With that, Hannah ended the call.

Anathea was a little taken aback by how quickly and abruptly Hannah hung up on her.

Meanwhile, Hannah set her phone down and shielded Chloe,

A flicker of guilt seized Hannah, but the next second, Chloe tipped her head back to peck her on the cheek. Eyes curving into crescents, Chloe said, "You're not selfish, Mommy. I love you the most, and I'll stay by your side and protect you forever!"Hannah broke into a small laugh at Chloe's solemn promise, delivered in a childish tone. Tears glistened in her eyes as she tightened her arms around Chloe. "I love you the most, too, Chloe."Hannah strolled under the streetlights with Chloe in her arms, their elongated shadows cast on the sidewalk. The yellow lighting softened their features and added a warm touch to the private mother-daughter moment.Meanwhile, behind them, a luxurious limousine slowly drove down the street.Dominic was in the backseat, his gaze fixed on Hannah's and Chloe's silhouettes as they walked into the distance. Envy, tinged with loneliness, flashed in his eyes. His phone wouldn't stop ringing. Shirley had been calling him, but the last thing he wanted wa

Chloe blinked. "My father?""Chloe—" Hannah made to stop Chloe from answering Dominic's question. However, Chloe shook her head at that moment and said with something like disappointment, "I don't have a father.""You don't have one?" A thoughtful look flashed in Dominic's eyes. He glanced at Hannah and asked, "Is that true?"Even as Hannah gulped instinctively, she feigned nonchalance and said, "He's just an ex-boyfriend who doesn't deserve to be brought up in conversation, let alone be Chloe's dad.""Which ex-boyfriend are we talking about?" Dominic pressed."That's none of your business." Hannah's tone was icy and sharp. "Why should I tell you everything? It's not like we're close."Dominic snorted in disbelief at the offhanded remark. How dare she say they weren't close? He prodded his molars with his tongue as he threw Hannah a look so scathing she could have died from a thousand cuts. "You're a bona fide ingrate, Hannah."Hannah turned away, refusing to look at him. "Le

Had Dominic actually believed Hannah would abandon Chloe, the daughter she'd gone through hell and back to bring into this world, for career resources? Hannah would rather never set foot in the entertainment industry again than trade Chloe for it."Part ways amicably and never look back, huh?" Dominic sneered. "We've had at least five or six years' worth of history between us, Hannah. Surely the sex would have left you feeling something for me even if it isn't love—""Watch your tongue!" Hannah quickly cut Dominic off and covered Chloe's ears."Goodness, developed a sense of morality and shame, have we?" Dominic drawled sarcastically. "Don't forget that you crawled into my lap to spare your dear friend. You even promised you'd bear me a child—""Dominic!" Hannah interrupted him before he could finish his sentence, her face flushed from anger and panic. "Shut the hell up!"How could he say such crude things in front of a little kid?Dominic regarded Hannah's outburst with mild

Hannah blanched as old memories played through her mind. She'd been so intent on convincing Dominic that she was a money-grubbing liar that she made up countless lies, one of which was that she'd be willing to trade her child away for career resources! However, Hannah didn't think Dominic, who had been so infuriated as to storm out on her then, would now turn around and promise to return her resources."What are you playing at?" Her voice was grave and icy. She suddenly realized she couldn't understand Dominic at all. He'd been the one to break things off with her for good the last time, only to unceremoniously shove her and Chloe into his car without warning when they met again! And now, he was openly assessing her with amusement. However, instead of answering Hannah's question, he cut a look at Chloe and asked, "What's your name, kid?"Chloe's brows furrowed. She refused to speak to him. So what if he was good-looking? Anyone who picked on Hannah was bound to be a big meanie!

Gregory sensed that something was off about Anathea. "Annie?"At that moment, Xander's voice sounded outside the bedroom. "Mom!"Xander's cry was like a saving grace for Anathea. She shoved Gregory aside and went to open the door.Gregory watched her scurry away from him, his lips pressed into a tight line. He realized it was upsetting to be left hanging like this.A dazed, wounded look flashed in his eyes, and he froze as he processed the feeling. He recalled the times he'd left Anathea hanging whenever she sought him out, all because he'd been busy with whatever activity or work he had at the time. Now that the roles were reversed, Gregory realized how awful he'd been to Anathea before. This was only one of many horrible things he'd done to her.The enlightenment struck him like lightning. As it turned out, the indifference, apathy, and neglect he'd shown Anathea all these years were like knives that cut her bit by bit, whittling down the woman who had loved him wholeheartedly
