Chapter 1

"Get a load of this shameless bitch! He thinks he can just walk in without paying!"

"Smile, you freeloading bum. You're on the internet now!"

Phones and cameras shot up and pointed at me like weapons. I turned aside and shielded my face with my hands. I forced myself to stay calm.

"What are you talking about? This estate is mine. I have no idea what you're accusing me of."

The woman who had started the shouting, the obvious ringleader, stepped closer instead of backing off.

She yelled hard enough that flecks of spit nearly hit my face.

"Cut the crap. We all know Belgard Estate belongs to our Jaxie, you scum. If you're going to run a scam, at least pick a place owned by someone as irrelevant as you are.

"Miss LePenn already given this estate to Jaxie. She said so on a livestream."

I frowned.

Half a month ago, my girlfriend, Sylvia LePenn, had lent the estate to the mayor for a promotional shoot. The video had gone viral. Since then, Belgard had become the top livestream backdrop and photo spot for influencers. Once the celebrities arrived, their fans followed. The crowds multiplied overnight.

The problem was simple. I had no idea the estate had turned into a fan gathering site. I owned this place.

Today was my grandfather's birthday party. I did not have time to argue about property rights with people consumed by late-stage parasocial obsession.

I pulled up an official document on my phone and held it out.

"Look at this. My name is on the deed. Belgard is mine," I said evenly. "Now move aside. I need to get my wine."

The ringleader snatched my phone and scanned the screen. She looked me over with open suspicion.

"How are we supposed to know this is real? None of us works in property. None of us owns a wine estate. This could be fake. It could be AI."

My patience snapped, and I called my butler. "William. Tell them. Is this fake?"

William Barnes had served as Belgard's majordomo since he was a young man. He had always been steady and dependable.

I expected him to settle this in seconds.

He glanced at my phone, then tossed it back to me. "Who the hell are you? Everyone knows Miss Sylvia LePenn owns Belgard. I've worked here for decades. I know exactly who I serve, and it's not you."

The woman glared at me.

"So you are a con artist. You're here to sabotage our meet-and-greet, aren't you?" she shrieked. "I can see it in your eyes. You're jealous of Jaxie. You want to hurt him."

The fans behind her surged forward and swallowed her in the crowd.

As she disappeared, I caught a glimpse of the nameplate pinned to her chest: Melanie.

I ignored the mob and fixed my gaze on William and his shifty eyes.

"Who convinced your father to extend your contract when my father planned to fire you ten years ago because you weren't quick enough anymore?" I shot back. "I did. And now you claim you don't know me?"

William wiped sweat from his brow and signaled for security.

Then he raised his voice for the crowd. "Oh, I remember you. You showed up a month ago and refused to leave until you could see Miss LePenn. You thought she might fall for you looking like that. Too bad for you. Miss LePenn already had Jacques by then."

The crowd erupted.

"How dare you try to ruin Jaxie and his sweetheart!"

"Jealousy is ugly, and you're the ugliest of all. Let's make him famous online. See if he can ever show his face outside again," Melanie shouted.

She hurled a water bottle at me. It struck my forehead. Sharp, immediate pain flared. I touched my brow and felt the swelling begin.

As the fans wailed about their perfect love story, a thought began to form in my mind.

Jacques thought he was winning because he had incited a mob."Just because you're rich and powerful doesn't mean you can silence me or trample on my rights, Richard Vernon! You don't have the power or authority to cancel me. Now all my fans will know you're the one behind my account's ban. They'll see what a coward and a tyrant you are."I fixed the rioting crowd with a cool, steady stare. The noise died at once.I rolled down the window and smiled. "Do you miss prison already, Jacques? And you, Sylvia. How has your family been managing since our engagement fell apart? Have the losses you've suffered been too mild for your taste?"Sylvia stiffened, then trembled with rage. "You think I don't know you've been sabotaging LePenn Inc. behind the scenes? Your empire won't last forever, Richard. When it crumbles, LePenn Inc. will rise again."Jacques grew even more animated. "You won't get away with this, Richard! The internet is furious about your abuse of power. They'll deliver real j

I could see what he truly wanted. He wanted to stay.I set a bag of cash on the table. "I know what kind of person you are, William. That is why you are no longer suitable to serve as majordomo."If anyone was bullying you, you should have told me at once. You should not have allowed others to walk over your employer."Take this. It is your severance pay. Goodbye."William stood in silence for a long moment. In the end, he offered a quiet apology and walked away from the place where he had spent most of his life, leaving the cash untouched.I retrieved the bottle of wine I had come for and returned to my grandfather's birthday party. Belgard could wait.To my relief, the incident at Belgard had not dampened my grandfather's spirits. He enjoyed the evening immensely.…At my direction, the IVWA calculated every detail of the damage and losses Belgard had sustained and compiled a formal case against Sylvia and Jacques. The value of the items that jerk had appropriated might have

I raised my hand to summon the IVWA agents. "Please retrieve the security footage from this exact date so we can all see what really happened."Sylvia and Jacques went pale. They began to bluster."Why would some international organization even have your security footage?" Jacques demanded."Do you really think you can fabricate footage with AI and make everyone believe you, Richard?"I gave a short, derisive laugh. "Oh, please. Why would I need to? Ever since Belgard earned its status as a Class A wine estate, the IVWA has installed microcameras throughout the building. Their equipment is state of the art. It records both video and audio in exceptionally high quality."Only I have the authority to retrieve the footage. No one could have doctored it. We will know very soon what is real and what is not."The footage appeared on the screen within minutes. As expected, it cleared me completely. I had not used suggestive language with the employee, nor had anything sexual occurred be

"I have proof that he cheated on me with a female employee at the estate! They had a tryst right here! Yes, one of us has to pay under the prenup, but it won't be me!"Jacques exchanged a look with Sylvia and nodded. He pulled out his phone and swiped through several photos for us to see. They showed me leaning close to a female worker at Belgard. In one, I entered her room and seemed to pat her head. In another, the most open to misreading, I handed her a sleeping robe. The problem was… I had no recollection of any of it.Jacques glared at me with disdain. "The first time I borrowed Belgard, I said it was for my livestream. That was just an excuse. I wanted to catch Richard red-handed after I noticed you cheating on Sylvia. I never expected the evidence to fall into my lap so easily."Look at these photos. We all know what they mean, right? She took the robe and went into the bathroom. What else could have happened? Hell, I still remember how loud she was from outside. She sang l

I had never imagined I would live to see her behave so shamelessly. After everything she had done, including driving a wedge between the Vernons and the city council, she still believed she had done nothing wrong. As I watched her help Jacques to his feet, I let out a cold sneer."I'm not afraid to change my mind either, Sylvia. I've decided to cancel our engagement," I said evenly. "I'll be sending you a bill detailing the full amount Belgard has lost. You'll be held liable."She clearly had not expected that. She had always taken our relationship for granted. Whatever she asked for, I provided without hesitation.I had considered that generosity part of my duty as her fiancé. She, however, treated it as proof that her greed had no limits. What more was there to say? A woman like that did not deserve to become my wife. When I failed to return to the party, the rest of the Vernon family came to Belgard to find me.My grandfather's expression darkened the moment he spotted the IV

Before anyone had even mentioned it, Sylvia had already jumped in preemptively."Stop making up stories among yourselves! I don't know this guy, period!" She looked at me and added anxiously, "Stop feeding them lies! This estate belongs to me, and I have every right to gift it to my boyfriend. Security! Get this madman out of my property!"Six men answered by forcefully twisting my arms behind me before shoving me toward the exit. I realized I did not recognize any of their faces. It just occurred to me that almost everyone in the retinue was a stranger—save for that snake, William, who might as well be someone I used to know. Oh my God, Sylvia had been giving my estate a total makeover, without my consent, while I was abroad! The security had barely pushed me out of the front door when we heard chopping sounds from above.A dozen helicopters landed on the clearing before uniformed men armed with guns flooded out of them and surrounded the estate. No one could get out now!The

Sylvia stopped dead in her tracks, her voice trembling. "W-Wait. W-Why are you here? Aren't you abroad on some important business? Y-You said you would need to stay there for a while—"Jacques tugged at her sleeves and gestured toward the cameras. "You came at the right time, honey. This jerk is a
