Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
I was stunned for several seconds.

My first thought was that Shane Zimmer was really good at keeping secrets.

Then, I quickly ran through the prenuptial agreement in my mind. What was the third clause again? Oh, right. If he found his true love, I'd walk away with double the alimony.

I instantly stepped aside and said in a polite, businesslike tone, "Come on in. Shane's still at the office. Have a seat. What would you like to drink?"

My reaction clearly took the teenager by surprise. He stared blankly at me for a while before asking, "Aren't… you angry?"

Angry? Why would I be?

I'd have loved it if Shane were having an affair. He'd have to pay me tens of millions in alimony, and I could go live the high life!

I studied the teenager as he changed into a pair of indoor slippers. At 17, he was starting to fill out like an adult. His eyes resembled Shane's, but he exuded an air of innocence that Shane had never had.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Chris Zimmer."

I took a bottle of water from the refrigerator and handed it to him. "Chris," I said comfortingly, "your dad and I are in a contract marriage. We're both in it for our own gain. I have no right to be angry about his personal affairs."

Holding the bottle, Chris gulped and kept silent.

I sat on the armchair across from him, with the coffee table between us, and watched him.

Shane and Chris did look alike.

My mind revisited a moment three years ago. Before breathing his last, Dad had clutched Shane's hands as he left me in Shane's care.

The Zimmer family owed Dad their lives, so Shane had repaid the debt by agreeing to the marriage.

The night before we'd received our marriage certificate, Shane had handed me a prenup.

I'd gone through the document briefly and held up three fingers. "I have three clauses to add. One, we don't talk about love, only dividends. Two, we stay out of each other's lives. Three, if one day he finds his true love, I walk away immediately, and all I want is double the alimony."

Without hesitation, he'd lowered his head and signed the papers. "No problem."

There had never been anything romantic between us.

After the wedding, we stayed in separate rooms and had our meals separately. Every month, he spent two-thirds of his time overseas. Whatever time he had remaining, he spent it more with his secretary than with me.

Three years ago, when we went to the city hall, Shane had been the first to head into the building and sign the papers. Throughout the whole process, he hadn't glanced my way even once. He had made it seem as though he was merely delivering a business project, not getting married.

When Shane returned home, I was curled up on the couch watching a variety show.

His footsteps paused when he walked past the couch.

I turned up the volume slightly and continued watching the program.

He didn't go upstairs.

I stole a glance at him out of the corner of my eye. He was still standing there, staring at me intently.

"Who did you meet today?" he asked.

I paused the show and sat up straight.

"You sure get the news fast. A pretty good-looking teenager showed up and claimed to be your son. You did a good job keeping him a secret, Mr. Zimmer."

The room fell silent for several seconds. His face betrayed no hints of emotion. However, he didn't deny it.

Then, he said, "I'll take care of it."

I nodded and got up from the couch. As I walked past him, I paused briefly.

"Sure. Just let me know if you need my cooperation with the divorce proceedings."

Shane was silent for a moment. Then, he suddenly smiled. At night, Chris was reading a book on the couch, a half-eaten bag of chips lying by his feet.Shane came out of the study with a document. The document was A4-sized, and its front page was blank. He walked to the coffee table and placed it before Chris.Chris looked up. Shooting Shane a confused look, he flipped to the first page.I was going downstairs for a glass of water. As I passed by the couch, I stole a glance at the document. The title was in bold. Chris had worn the same clothes for two days. It was badly wrinkled now. From where I stood, I could see the back of his neck and his shoulder blades trembling beneath the fabric.Shane said, "Your mom left you in my care before she passed away. I failed to take good care of you. I'm sorry."Chris didn't turn around. His shoulders heaved once and relaxed.Gazing at the headstone, Shane continued, "Also, the money you've received over the years isn't from me. Your mother enlisted the help of a trust company when she was still around to transfer the money to you every month on the 15th. She said it was a little gesture from her as a mother, not the Zimmer family." Chris didn't budge. He stayed crouched there, like a tree bent over by a storm. After a long time, he said in a hoarse voice, "…Shane."His back sagged, as if saying Shane's name had lifted the weight he'd been carrying for eight years.Shane patted his shoulder. "Let's go home."On the drive back, Chris leaned agains

Chris stood rooted to the spot. Through clenched teeth, he hissed, "I don't believe you. You're lying."Shane pressed his lips into a thin line and said nothing.I sighed and walked to the cabinet. I opened the bottom drawer, and there was the old photo album. I took it out and placed it on the coffee table.Chris stared at it. His voice trembled as he said, "That belonged to my mom."He reached out, pausing when his fingertip touched the cover. As he flipped open the album, there was the faded Polaroid showing the woman's side profile and the baby in her arms, with the old apartment as the background. He gently ran his finger along the edges of the photo. He continued flipping through the album. On the last page, there was a letter.I peeked at it. It was Anne's letter to Chris just before she passed away.He took a long time reading it. When he looked up again, his eyes were red.Shane sat up straighter.Chris said in a low voice, "My mom said you're the only one who's in

Tracing the rim of his glass with his finger, Leo drawled, "He's part of the family too. He's been out there long enough. It's about time he returns home."I looked up.Leo was smiling gently, but his smile sent a chill down my spine. The moment he said that, everyone turned to look. Some sipped their drinks; others exchanged glances.Ivan, who'd passed away at a young age, had an illegitimate son. That news spread like wildfire among the guests.Shane set his utensils down. He was about to speak when I put my napkin aside and chuckled."You sure are well-informed, Uncle Leo. Chris is still young. His education comes first. There's no need to rush to bring him back into the family."Leo's smile froze.I met his eyes. "On the other hand, you've been so kind to Chris over the years. We appreciate the thought."He turned to look at me. He was still smiling, but his eyes gleamed dangerously. After a few seconds, he picked up his glass and downed it as punishment."You're too kin

I turned and entered the kitchen.20 minutes later, I set a plate of cookies on the coffee table in front of Chris. They were fresh out of the oven, piping hot and smelling of delicious butter. He looked from the cookies to me. "Wendy, you…"Before he could finish, I picked up my coffee and looked out the window. "Try it. I didn't put much sugar."He picked up a cookie and took a bite. Lowering his head, he took another bite.He didn't say a word.Suddenly, his eyes reddened. He turned away and pretended to look at the birch tree outside the window.I put my cup down."Chris."He hummed in response. His voice sounded thick."From now on, let me know if there's anything you'd like to eat."He didn't answer. Instead, he took another cookie and slowly munched on it.That afternoon, he curled up on the couch. His bag had slid off onto the floor.I went upstairs for a blanket. When I came back down, he was already asleep.17. What a wonderful age to be. I draped the blanket

Chris wrote, "I'm not Shane's son. You don't have to divorce him. If you stay, at least you won't have to worry about money. My mom refused to return to the Zimmer family back then. Later, she got sick and didn't have money for the treatment. Shane annoys me, but I don't want to hurt you."I clutched the piece of paper tightly and stood there for some time. When I opened the door, Chris was still waiting in the hallway."Your mom…" I began. He said, "She didn't demand to be acknowledged, refused the money offered to her, and stayed out of my father's marriage. She thought she could raise me without any of that. Then she got sick and couldn't pay the medical bills. Still, she said she didn't blame anyone for it." When Shane returned, I called out to him."Shane."He paused."About Chris' mother…" I said. There was no moon that night. The light from through the door gap shone on him, blurring his features.I asked, "What exactly happened?"Chris is Ivan's son," he said emotio
