Chapter Six-Seeing My Ex-Wife

Dunlop West

“Boss, you have a call about William”, my personal assistant, James, told me.

“Direct it to my line”, I instruct

After a while, a voice comes up on my telephone and a man who calls himself Luca says that William wants to come along with his child for a playdate. I directed him to pass the phone to William and when I confirmed that he actually wanted to go, I approved and got the house address from Luca, so I could pick him up later. William has always had a problem with making new friends since we moved to Germany. At least, he has made one now and I am so delighted.

I quickly round up everything at the office and sign the necessary files and tell James to clean up before I leave. I looked at the address I was given and started driving there. At some point, I get lost, so I use Apple Maps and successfully find my way there. The house I was directed to was a beautiful duplex with two cars packed outside. I walked over to the front door and rang the doorbell.

A few seconds, a lady opened the door, and she looked very oddly familiar.

“Dunlop” she says in shock, and I immediately recognize who it was.

“How did you find me?” she continues, her expression gradually changing from shock to anger.

It was Hazel, my ex-wife. What was she doing here? She hasn’t changed a bit.

“Hazel, you’re really here” I said unbelievably.

For some reason, she thinks that I’m feigning surprise and orders me out of her house until I revel that I was directed here by someone named Luca to pick up my son. A masculine voice calls out from inside, asking who is at the door. The owner of the voice approaches and introduces himself as Jacob, Hazel’s boyfriend. I introduced myself and Jacob made a joke about having the surname as Hazel. She kept my name. I wonder why.

Hazel quickly tries to brush off the joke and get William to me, but Jacob invites me to stay for dinner and, despite Hazel’s signals to decline the invitation, I accept and walk in with Jacob, leaving her at the front door.

As soon as William sees me, he immediately runs to welcome me with a hug and is so eager to tell me all about his new friend. We all head to the dining room and Hazel finally joins us. Jacob asks Hazel to serve me some food, and after she murmurs something, she serves me. I take it she is not happy to see me hear, but there’s nothing I can do about it.

She looks so beautiful, even more beautiful than when we were married. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Her eyes were still blue and she still had full pink lips. She had gained slight weight since the last time I saw her, she was rounded fully in appropriate areas.

Damn

I tore my eyes off her before anyone noticed I was staring. I tried to engage William and his friend.

“So how was school today, William? Tell me all about your new friend” I said.

“School was fine, daddy my friend’s name is Zion”, William tells me excitedly.

“Hi, William’s dad”. Zion greets me excitedly while stuffing his mouth with food.

“Heyyy, no eating while talking, table manners” I said to Zion, smiling at how handsome the boy is

“You sound like mommy, that’s what mommy always says” he says, laughing.

Mommy? Zion is Hazel’s son. Jacob is probably the father. Wow, a lot has really changed since I last saw her.

Hazel watches us for some minutes, and later she excuses herself and storms out of the dining room and Jacob follows her.

“Mommy is in a bad mood today “, Zion notices.

“Daddy is sometimes like that, some days”, William says, and we all laugh.

“Don’t worry about mommy, she’ll come around”, I told Zion, and we continued laughing.

Hazel comes back to the dining room soon after and sees us laughing. She orders Zion upstairs and tells him he can see William tomorrow at school. She must really be pissed. I took that as my cue to leave. I stood up and thanked Jacob for the dinner and announced that I'd be leaving. He asks Hazel to escort me while he tucks Zion in. She walks me out of the front door to my car, then William wishes her goodnight and opens his arms for a hug.

At that point, all the anger in her diffuses and I could see the love and affection in her as she squats to hug him and wishes him a good night. Such a good mother she must be. She helps him into the car and when she is sure that he can’t hear us, she wears her anger back and turns her attention to me.

“I don’t want to ever see you in my house ever again” she says sternly, it breaks my heart.

I quickly remind her that our sons are friends, and she’ll just have to deal with me. She asks when I moved to Germany and I tell her about some business trips that were extended and ask her about her new boyfriend. She doesn’t take the question lightly and tells me to stay away from her and stormed inside.

She looks so cute when she is angry. I got in the car and made a call to James and tell him to postpone my trip back to New York indefinitely. I have to win back Hazel, whatever it takes.
