Edward’s pov

I was standing in the hallway, just outside the boardroom.

My hands were on my hips. My eyes were squeezed shut. I was gritting my teeth.

I still felt all the eyes of the board members burning holes in my back.

I wanted to scream.

She had done it again.

Charlotte.

How could she come into my office like that? With that goddamn outfit on.

Was I as crazy?

She looked liens hooker.

Like she's going to a private party or something?

I forced myself to open my eyes and look down at the floor. My heart was pumping, I was trying not to get excited, but I couldn't help it, my blood was too hot.

I had important things to do—mergers, meetings, deadlines.

But now the whole board thought I was a bad fucking joke. A man who couldn’t even deal with his own life.

I heard a small voice beside me. It was my assistant, Jason.

He held a file, but he seemed more nervous than he usually was.

"Sir, are you alright?" he asked cautiously.

I didn’t reply, just shook my head and took a deep breath.

Eloise’s povI got back to the office and sat down to look at a sleeping Selena. Sandra entered with a toothpick hanging from her lips.“That was… amazing,” she sang in a funny way. “I can’t believe I get to be your assistant and still have a way of going through these beautiful meals you make.”I gave a little bow. “Thank you. I’m so glad you like it.”I got up and stretched as I looked around the office.“I have to get home.”She nodded. “Sure thing. Don’t forget your contract.”“I won’t,” I smiled as I packed the book into my bag.I slung it around my shoulders and looked at Selena.“Say Sandra, do you know of any good schools around here?”She put a finger to her lips as she tried to think of an answer. “I do know one where my sister sends her child to. It’s a good school and they use visual cues to teach the pupils.”That sounded good enough for me.“I can show you today on my way home so that you can see the school,” she said as I nodded.“Well, I’m going home now. I don’t know

Eloise’s povI waited for a while before looking at my watch. Time was going and I was still here. It wasn’t like I was doing anything in this office anyway. Sandra knocked on the door and entered with a smile. She looked to see my daughter sleeping on the couch by the window.“Since she’s asleep, I was thinking we could tour the hotel. Make you see how we do things here.”I smiled and got to my feet.We then walked together as we made our way through the halls of the hotel.Everything was sparkling and bright and all I could do was gawk around.“No kidding,” I said. “The board that decided to make this must be really rich.”“Oh, it’s just one person who made all this.”“Must be a billionaire then.”“He is.” Sandra smiled. “It’s one of the best hotels in the city. Some people call it a crown of New York.” I nodded slowly. I could believe that. It indeed wasn't a building with rooms and restaurants, it was like a different planet or maybe world here. The air smelled of some expensive

Edward’s povShe shuddered when I yelled at her like that as she had expected so much but not that. She nodded and looked away before taking up her bags.I watched her walk out, yet not even a drop of care moved within me.I just wanted her out and if possible dead. She was dead to me.My phone buzzed as I picked it up. It was my assistant Bryan.“I’m seriously not in a good mood. You better not be reminding me of anything.”“It’s just that the new chef we hired is here.”That sent bells ringing in my head. Eloise.“Have you given her all she needs. The car, the house, the…”“Sir? Don’t you think it’s suspicious you’re doing all this? To be honest, she was thinking of the worst things today. I believe we should slow down a bit.”I nodded and took in deep breaths. Maybe he was right.“And her daughter had a mini spot like you told us to create for her.”I sighed and nodded. “Give her the stuff to sign. I’ll be there soon.”“Alright, sir,”With that, he hung up as I sat down on my sofa

Eloise’s povI was still in the office looking out when a knock came on the door and a woman entered.“Hello, I will be your assistant. I’ll handle all your calls and checking and—“I raised my hand to stop her. “Excuse me. I am just a chef who was hired for this position. No offense, but for the kind of work I said I wanted to do, I don’t think all this good stuff is supposed to be amongst the benefits.”She smiled and nodded. “I see. Well, you’ll be briefed later this afternoon. I’m only trying to introduce myself so you’ll know what you’re getting.”“I’m just a chef,” I scoffed. This was getting ridiculous. How are we even in this situation? It felt weird but I didn't know what to do next. All I could do was pray this job wasn't like a scam one even when it looked legit back in Paris when I had joined them. “Ma'am?” The woman called me as I looked at her with a small smile, trying to be comfortable even when my insides were boiling.“Mummy,” Selena tugged at my hand as I looked d

Eloise’s povPresent dayI woke up that morning to my daughter’s soft breath. The sun was rising through the curtain of the small but clean room they had given us. It wasn’t Paris, but it was quiet—a new beginning.I looked at Selena; her little hand tightly gripped the side of her blanket. She looked so still. So pure.I sighed and touched her face as I brushed her hair out of her face.“Hey baby,” I smiled as she stretched awake while blinking. “You should get up. We need to leave for work.”She blinked multiple times. “Are we going someplace, Mama?”I smiled back and kissed her forehead. “Yes, baby. I have work today. But don’t worry. You’re coming with me.”She clapped her hands and sat up quickly, her excitement making me laugh. “Yay! I want to see your new kitchen!”“Not today, my little chef. But you’ll see where Mama works.”We both got ready. I wore a soft cream blouse and simple black pants, and my hair was neatly packed up. Not too dressed but serious was my aim. It was my

Edward’s povI sat down with a calm note on my face as I saw the doctor walking in.Wearing his white coat, his glasses balanced on his nose. He looked at me with a faint smile.“Good evening, Edward,” he cooed. “I trust you’re well?”I met his gaze with frosty eyes. “Just do it,” I snarled. “Give me what you brought.”I was impatient and it showed. But I didn’t care. I needed this done so I could start pressing out my judgment. He gave a slow nod. “Of course.”He kept his back to me as he walked across the room and put a black medical case on the table. When he’d opened that, I knew with absolute certainty what he’d take out of it.But I had to have it confirmed by somebody else. He glanced up at me, then over at Charlotte who was standing hard and tight in a corner as if she were a schoolgirl who’d been caught stealing. She wouldn’t look me in the eye.Dr. Harris opened the folder, skimmed the first page with his eyes, and then he coughed softly. He looked straight at me and proclai
