Edward’s pov

It was late in the evening. I was in my study. The golden lamp on my table was throwing a soft beam on the sparse documents and the unattended cup of coffee. The house was dead silent, too silent to my liking. Charlotte had taken Carmen with her to the room and I had got some time for myself after a long time, to sort things out in my head.

I tilted against the hard back of my leather chair and pressed both hands against my eyes, rubbing them slowly as if by doing so would help alleviate the problem I was having.

But then before giving up; before everything went black inside me, there were two buzzes from my phone.

For a second or two I blinked at it nonchalantly.

It was an unsaved number.

Not waiting for a second ring, I picked up, I got up from the chair, and shuffled to the door.

Slowly I turned the lock. It was essential that no one came in, especially Charlotte. I had to have this call alone and for some reason, I felt like it was an important one. A very important

Eloise’s povPresent dayI woke up that morning to my daughter’s soft breath. The sun was rising through the curtain of the small but clean room they had given us. It wasn’t Paris, but it was quiet—a new beginning.I looked at Selena; her little hand tightly gripped the side of her blanket. She looked so still. So pure.I sighed and touched her face as I brushed her hair out of her face.“Hey baby,” I smiled as she stretched awake while blinking. “You should get up. We need to leave for work.”She blinked multiple times. “Are we going someplace, Mama?”I smiled back and kissed her forehead. “Yes, baby. I have work today. But don’t worry. You’re coming with me.”She clapped her hands and sat up quickly, her excitement making me laugh. “Yay! I want to see your new kitchen!”“Not today, my little chef. But you’ll see where Mama works.”We both got ready. I wore a soft cream blouse and simple black pants, and my hair was neatly packed up. Not too dressed but serious was my aim. It was my

Edward’s povI sat down with a calm note on my face as I saw the doctor walking in.Wearing his white coat, his glasses balanced on his nose. He looked at me with a faint smile.“Good evening, Edward,” he cooed. “I trust you’re well?”I met his gaze with frosty eyes. “Just do it,” I snarled. “Give me what you brought.”I was impatient and it showed. But I didn’t care. I needed this done so I could start pressing out my judgment. He gave a slow nod. “Of course.”He kept his back to me as he walked across the room and put a black medical case on the table. When he’d opened that, I knew with absolute certainty what he’d take out of it.But I had to have it confirmed by somebody else. He glanced up at me, then over at Charlotte who was standing hard and tight in a corner as if she were a schoolgirl who’d been caught stealing. She wouldn’t look me in the eye.Dr. Harris opened the folder, skimmed the first page with his eyes, and then he coughed softly. He looked straight at me and proclai

Edward’s povWe got back home that evening. I was so mad at her that I couldn’t even say anything to her.I could feel her staring at me but I didn’t care.I got back and heard Carmen playing in her room but I walked to the living room and turned to face Charlotte. I was mad.I started to laugh at first while the pain hit me.She was confused as to why I was laughing.“You know the funny thing is that I actually believed… just for a moment… that perhaps you had changed.”Her face drained of color. “Edward, don’t—”I held up a hand to stop her. “Don’t beg. Don’t explain. Just listen.” She swallowed and nodded her head.“Bloody fool,” I said, and paced a bit. “A complete bloody twit to let you back in—back into my life. To think maybe. Maybe time had made you better. Wiser.”She tried to tooth me as I stepped back. "Don't touch me. Don't come near me." She started to cry. “Edward…”“I want you to get out of this house and my life at once.”“Edward, please—don’t do this. I’m pregnant… a

Edward’s povI stood outside the office door, just about to head into the hallway when I heard voices. Charlotte’s voice. And Dr. Lennox’s.At first, I didn’t want to listen. I was tired, angry, and confused about my illness. But then I heard my name—and I paused.I leaned in closer. As much as I was confused as to why she was here, I didn’t like the part where she had to be here. It wasn’t her business to be here.I tried to tell myself that she was here to see my doctor but I kept my calm.I would just listen to what she would say and know if she was truly as good as she said she was. Maybe she had changed. My mind tried to tell me she had but I guessed she had. However, the words that followed made my body freeze.Charlotte was telling him to increase my medication. Not because I was getting worse. Not because the treatment had changed.No.She wanted me to be weak. Sick. Helpless. Her exact words were, “I need him sick so he’ll depend on me.”I didn’t breathe. I couldn’t even move

Charlotte’s povThe moment I got to dr Lennox’s office, I knocked as he opened up and panicked when he saw me.“You shouldn’t be here,” he muttered as he looked around, looking for someone or anyone to be afraid of.“What are you talking about?”I entered and shut the door behind as he went to stand before me“Charlotte, what do you want?” he snapped.I smiled and rolled my eyes.“Oh relax. I am not here to threaten you. I’m only here to know how his treatments are going?”“Since when did you care about Edward?”“Since I knew that killing him would leave his money to me.”“You shouldn’t be here,” he repeated. “Edward is in the building right now, if he or anyone else sees you I can only imagine the questions it will raise.”I looked away for a moment and thought before turning back to him. “I know but I’m smart about it. I made sure he didn’t see me. I just need to talk to you.”He sighed and finally sat back down, rubbing his forehead like I was actually giving him a headache.“I ho
