Chapter Twenty-One

I delivered Cindy to the house and watched Kenton take her inside before I continued on to the stable with the horses.  I’d asked about Godwin and was told that he was recovering nicely from his attack and should be back to normal very soon, so I took my time tending to the horses.  I needed to be alone and think.  I’d killed.  Taken life.  Even though they were beasts who deserved to be punished, the impact of killing them was hitting home.  Could I have done something different?  Could I have stopped them and punished them in a different way?  Was killing them really necessary?

I battled within myself for the better part of an hour before Godwin appeared in the doorway of the stable. 

He wore a look of humility and concern as he asked, “Are you alright?”
