The sun had begun its slow descent beyond the jagged Nyxorian cliffs, bleeding a dusky orange across the horizon. Shadows stretched like claws over the field, cloaking the ridges and hollow valleys that separated the two waiting armies. An eerie calm hung in the air—the kind that came before a storm, when even the birds knew to silence themselves.

Triston sat astride his black warhorse, still and silent as a statue carved from obsidian. The wind tugged at the dark braids in his hair and the edges of his cloak, but he made no move, no sound. The fresh scar in his shoulder pulsing with each breath. Behind him, the Elyrian soldiers waited in tense silence, their hands tightening on sword hilts, arrows notched loosely to bowstrings.

“Should we give the order to engage?” Jaxon asked.

Triston didn't answer with words, instead he gave a curt nod. Jaxon whipped his horse around and ride through the ranks, disappearing into the back. And then the silence shattered.

“Ivone?” Revin whispered her name into the darkness as he crossed the threshold into the room. A sharp gasp echoed in the room, then a breathless whisper followed, “Revin?” He barely had time to register the relief in her voice before snap—thwip! Two metal spikes shot out from opposite corners of the room, embedding themselves with brutal precision into his shoulders. A surge of white-hot pain erupted through him as they locked into place with a mechanical clink, then yanked him forward, arms flared and torso pinned. Immobilized. Revin let out a choked cry, blood already dripping from the wounds, pooling at his sides. From the corner of the room, slow footsteps echoed against the stone floor. A match was struck and a lantern flared to life, casting a warm glow across the room—and illuminating a cruel scene. Dathan stepped forward from the shadows, wearing a self-satisfied smirk as he adjusted the lantern and set it on the table beside the bed. His expression was one of mocking amu

Triston remained as he was, eyes fixed ahead, not on the flames, nor on the fallen bodies littering the field, but on a single scene: a Nyxorian soldier stumbling as he tried to retreat, only to be caught and dragged down by two feral rogue omegas near a splintered supply cart. The man shrieked in agony. Then came the wet, choking gurgle of a crushed throat. Blood splashed against the side of a burnt-out wagon. Another flame erupted, this time near the edge of the Nyxorian barracks, illuminating the chaos in crimson light. Triston’s lips twitched—neither smile nor scowl—just the hint of something that flickered and vanished. Then, finally, he spoke. “No,” he said softly, but his voice carried like a blade across the line. “This isn’t our battle.” Xaren stiffened. “But Reyes—” “Let Reyes taste disarray,” Triston cut in, his eyes still never blinking. “Let him see what it’s like when control slips through your fingers. Let the madness he fostered turn back on him.” There was a paus

Beneath the castle, deep within the twisting stone veins of the catacombs, the scent of damp earth and old death hung thick in the air. Their torches hissed and crackled, casting flickering shadows on the ancient stone walls as Reyes led the group forward with long, purposeful strides. A faint stiffness clung to his movements, the dull ache of the stab wound in his side, earned in yesterday’s brutal clash with Triston, biting deeper with every step. Blood had dried beneath the bandages, but the injury throbbed in rhythm with his heartbeat, a burning reminder of just how close the battle had come. Behind him, Dathan followed closely, his brows drawn in confusion. He kept a wary eye on Reyes, noting the tension in the Alpha’s jaw and the subtle winces he failed to fully hide. Four elite guards flanked them, their armor muted, their footsteps careful, as if even the walls could be listening. None of them spoke. The silence down here didn’t like to be disturbed. “Reyes,” Dathan called

Ivone’s expression shifted immediately, the air tightening between them. Her eyes sharpened with suspicion. “What do you mean by that?” she asked, voice laced with caution. Before he could answer, she reached out and snatched the scroll from his hand with a suddenness that made him step back. “Reyes,” she said, tone suddenly sharp, “what are you going to do?” But Reyes didn’t answer her right away. His smirk had faded, replaced now by something far darker—a flicker of hurt buried beneath his fury. “You stand here,” he said through clenched teeth, “in my castle… after all this… still worrying over Triston. Still defending him.” Ivone blinked in disbelief, her head rearing back slightly. “You are my mate,” he continued, his voice rising like a growl, “and yet your heart still bleeds for another man. Your thoughts still linger on him. What does that make me, Ivone?” The words hit her like a slap, sharp, unexpected. She froze for a breath, her heart thudding as the weight of what he’

But as his eyes swept past her—drawn not by her defiance, but by something behind her—his anger briefly gave way to curiosity and his gaze landed on the table. The edge of an old scroll had come unrolled amidst scattered papers and ink-stained notes. The parchment was worn, but what caught his attention was the seal—a broken wax crest he hadn’t seen in decades. A seal once belonging to the royal scribes of Nyxoria. “What’s this?” Reyes muttered, stepping around her. Ivone turned slowly as he reached for the scroll. “Don’t,” she said softly, but he was already pulling it toward him. The moment his eyes began scanning the faded ink, his face changed. The tightness in his jaw loosened, just slightly, and the fire that had burned behind his eyes moments before dulled into something sharper—less rage, more calculation. His hand hovered over the aged parchment, fingers twitching with restraint as he took in the words scrawled across the brittle surface. The tension in his shoulders still
