They move to positions, Elena at the front door, Dante and Sera at a broken window facing the back. Through gaps in the walls, Sera sees figures moving in the darkness. The Order came prepared, dressed in tactical gear, carrying assault rifles.

Hunters who know how to kill supernaturals.

"Ready?" Elena calls softly.

"Ready," Dante confirms.

Elena throws open the front door and runs, shifting into a silver-gray wolf mid-stride. Gunfire erupts immediately, bullets tearing through the night.

Sera and Dante burst through the back window. Sera's rust-colored wolf hits the ground first, immediately attacking the nearest hunter—her jaws close on his arm, making him drop his weapon.

Dante's alpha wolf is right behind her, massive and deadly. He takes down two hunters before they can react, his supernatural speed overwhelming their human reflexes.

But there are too many. For every hunter they take down, two more appear. Silver bullets whiz past Sera's head. One catches her shoulder, burning li

Hope's fifteenth birthday arrives with chaos instead of celebration. She wakes to urgent pounding on her door—Cameron, his expression grim."Blackfang just declared you persona non grata. You're banned from their territory, and Julian is demanding the Council revoke your voting status for 'inflammatory interference in sovereign pack matters.'""Happy birthday to me." Hope drags herself out of bed. "What's the immediate threat level?""High. Julian's not just complaining—he's mobilizing. Moving troops to borders, fortifying positions, and preparing for possible conflict. Sienna reports unusual activity along her shared border with Blackfang.""He's escalating to military posturing because I exposed his daughter's extremism?" Hope throws on clothes. "That's an overreaction.""Or it's a calculated move. Force you to back down or face armed conflict. Put Council in a position of choosing between you and him."Hope's birthday celebration—modest anyway, just pack dinner—is postponed indefin

The Council chamber is packed with visiting alphas, pack representatives, and political observers—everyone wanting to witness the ceremony honoring the fourteen-year-old who stopped a genocide attempt.Hope stands backstage in formal ceremonial attire, feeling like an imposter. The dress is beautiful—deep blue silk with silver embroidery depicting wolves in protective stances. But it feels like a costume rather than clothing, playing a role rather than being herself."You look terrified," Cameron observes."I am terrified. Public speaking to two hundred wolves while seven Elders judge every word? Sounds like a nightmare.""You've faced down demon summoners and authoritarian alphas. A speech should be manageable.""Demon summoners don't critique your word choices or political positioning." Hope takes a steadying breath. "What if I mess this up? What if I say something that damages pack relations or offends the Council?""Then you'll deal with the consequences as you deal with everythin

The rogue arrives at dawn, barely conscious and bleeding from dozens of wounds.Hope is in her office reviewing patrol reports when the alarm sounds—intruder at the eastern border, critically injured, requesting sanctuary. She reaches the border checkpoint within minutes to find a female wolf in human form, covered in claw marks that look deliberately placed. Not random attack wounds—systematic torture."Sanctuary," the woman gasps. "Please. Alpha Silverclaw, I need sanctuary before Raven finds me.""Get her to medical," Hope orders. "Full security protocol—I want guards on her room until we know what we're dealing with."Cameron appears at Hope's shoulder. "This makes forty-four rogues in six weeks. All are fleeing from Blackfang territory. All mentioning Raven with that same terrified look.""Then it's time we found out who or what Raven is." Hope follows the medical team. "Prep an interview room. As soon as she's stable enough to talk, I want answers."Four hours later, Hope sits a

One month after Sera's death, Hope wakes up and realizes something has shifted. The grief is still there—probably always will be—but it's no longer the first thing she feels each morning. Instead, she feels curiosity about the day ahead, interest in the pack business waiting for her attention, and even a spark of anticipation for her training session with Lux.Progress. Small, gradual, but real.Cameron knocks on her door at precisely seven a.m.—his habit of punctuality is both endearing and occasionally annoying."Morning, Hope. Territory patrol reports came in overnight. Nothing urgent, but something is interesting you should see."Hope joins him in the office, where he's laid out patrol logs with several sections highlighted."What am I looking at?""Increased rogue activity along our western border. Not hostile—they're just passing through. But the numbers are unusual. We typically see five to ten rogues per month. This month, we've had forty-three.""Forty-three?" Hope studies th

Two weeks after the funeral, Hope realizes she's been operating on autopilot. She handles pack business—approves territorial patrol schedules, mediates minor disputes, reviews budget proposals. She attends Council meetings via video conference and provides detailed reports on the genocide attempt's aftermath. She meets with visiting alphas who want to establish alliances with the young alpha who stopped a demon summoning. She does everything an alpha should do.But she doesn't feel like an alpha. She feels like a fourteen-year-old girl playing dress-up in her grandmother's legacy."You're doing it again," Amara observes. They're in the medical office, ostensibly so Amara can run routine health checks. Really so Amara can monitor Hope's mental state without Hope feeling interrogated."Doing what?""Compartmentalizing until you fragment. It's a different fragmentation than the consciousness breakdown, but it's still dangerous." Amara sets down her stethoscope. "Hope, you've barely menti

The first twenty-four hours after Sera's death pass in a blur of grief and necessary action.Hope moves through the motions—coordinating cleanup, authorizing medical treatment for the injured, ensuring the captured conspirators are properly secured. She answers Council questions, provides statements for official records, and maintains the appearance of control.Inside, she's fragmenting. Not like the consciousness breakdown—this is different. This is grief so profound it threatens to swallow her whole. Every time she turns a corner, she expects to see Sera tending her roses or offering wisdom or simply being present. But Sera is gone.Burned out completely in a final act of protection that saved two hundred lives at the cost of her own."You need to sleep," Amara says gently. It's three in the morning, and Hope is still in her office reviewing security protocols."I'll sleep when everything is handled.""Everything is handled. The conspirators are in Council custody, the summoning is
