Connor wakes in a hospital bed, sunlight streaming through windows.

His first thought is Amara. He tries to sit up, but pain lances through his chest.

"Easy." Sera's there, pressing him gently back down. "You've been unconscious for two days. Silver poisoning nearly killed you."

"Amara—where is she?"

"Next room. She's awake, asking for you every five minutes." Sera's eyes are red from crying. "Connor, when we got the call that you were missing—"

"I'm okay, Mom. We both are."

"You're not okay. You have four broken ribs, second-degree burns on all four limbs, and enough silver in your system to kill a normal wolf." Her voice breaks. "But you're alive. Thank the moon, you're alive."

Dante enters with a wheelchair. "Thought you might want to see your mate."

Connor doesn't argue. His father helps him into the chair, careful of his injuries. They wheel him to Amara's room.

She's sitting up in bed, looking almost as bad as Connor feels. Her face is swollen from beatings, arms wrapped in band

Hope Silverclaw collapses on a Tuesday afternoon while mediating her seventh pack conflict in six weeks. She's in Montana, helping Alpha Michaels and his beta resolve a power struggle that's been tearing their pack apart for months. The session started well—both parties open to compromise, willing to try consciousness merging to truly understand each other's perspectives.Hope links their minds carefully, having done this hundreds of times before. She feels Michael's fear of losing control, his desperation to protect pack traditions. She feels the beta's frustration with stagnation, her vision for progress. Then she feels something else. Something wrong. The consciousness merge isn't separating cleanly. Fragments of Michaels and his beta are staying in Hope's mind. Not just understanding their perspectives—actually becoming them. Their memories bleeding into hers, their emotions overwhelming her own. She's merged with over three hundred individuals in the past eighteen months. Every s

  • Wolf shifter romance with murder mystery   Chapter Sixty-Three: Aria's First Crisis

Aria Chen's first month as Secretary-General tests everyone's faith in Elena's decision. The crisis begins on a Monday morning when Master Cassius of the New York vampire coven makes a very public declaration. He's old—over six hundred years—and commands respect across the vampire community. His words carry weight."We've existed for millennia," Cassius tells a gathered press conference, vampire representatives from a dozen courts standing behind him. "We've survived crusades, inquisitions, and Order purges. We don't bow to creatures who've been hiding in caves while we built civilizations."The insult is deliberate. Dragons emerged from hiding only three years ago. Vampires see them as newcomers, upstarts, unworthy of political authority.Aria's response is measured. She doesn't rage, doesn't threaten. She simply states facts."Master Cassius is certainly entitled to his opinion. The Council respects free speech and welcomes diverse perspectives. Integration thrives on honest dialogu

Elena discovers a plot to remove her from the Secretary-General position. It's not a vote of no confidence this time. Too obvious, too easy to defend against. Instead, it's structural—a proposed amendment to the Council charter that would term-limit the Secretary-General to five years maximum.Elena has served seven."It's specifically designed to remove you," Kieran says, reviewing the proposal. "They're not even pretending otherwise. The amendment would take effect immediately, requiring new elections within sixty days.""Who's behind it?""Dragon-aligned Council members, Preservationist sympathizers, and some vampires who think you've been too accommodating to wolves. Strange bedfellows united by dislike of your leadership."Elena should have seen this coming. She's made too many enemies, pushed too hard for integration, and challenged too many power structures. Her opponents finally found common ground in wanting her gone."Can we block the amendment?""Not without majority suppor

The retaliation comes three months later, subtle and devastating.Connor's Cooperative Healthcare Initiative starts losing members. Facilities that were thriving suddenly face financial difficulties—equipment failures, supply chain disruptions, staff leaving for better-paying dragon-owned positions."It's not coincidental," Amara says, reviewing the pattern. "Every problem traces back to dragon-controlled suppliers or dragon-affiliated companies. They're sabotaging us.""Can we prove it?""Not legally. Everything looks like normal business—competitive offers for our staff, supply chain issues that could be explained by market forces. But the pattern is clear. Dragons are systematically undermining our alternative model."Connor wants to fight back. But how do you fight beings who control trillions in assets and play century-long games? He reaches out to Elena for help. "Dragons are destroying the cooperative model. We need Council intervention.""Based on what evidence? Aria's good at

Connor discovers dragons have been playing a longer game than anyone realized.Three supernatural medical facilities in his network suddenly announce they're merging operations "for efficiency." All three are Drakon-owned. The merged entity will consolidate services, reduce redundancy, and "optimize resource allocation."It sounds reasonable until Connor reads the details. Consolidation means closing smaller clinics, centralizing care in urban centers, and eliminating specialty services that aren't "cost-effective.""They're destroying rural supernatural healthcare," he tells his board of directors. "Wolves in remote territories won't have access to medical care.""Drakon assures us they're improving overall service—""For urban supernaturals. Rural communities get nothing. That's not improvement—that's abandonment." Connor's frustration boils over. "We can't let this happen.""What can we do? Drakon owns the facilities. They can operate them however they want."Connor knows they're r

Being the youngest alpha in modern history comes with unexpected challenges.Hope is fourteen—developmentally nineteen—, but other alphas still see her as a child. They dismiss her opinions, patronize her decisions, and wait for her to fail."You're doing an excellent job ignoring them," Derek tells her after a particularly condescending inter-pack meeting. "Most alphas your age would have challenged someone by now.""I'm not most alphas. And challenging older wolves to prove myself would be falling into their expectations. They want me to be impulsive, emotional, and childish. I won't give them that satisfaction.""Wise. But also exhausting. Constantly proving yourself, never being accepted at face value.""That's life as a young female hybrid alpha. I knew what I was signing up for."But did she? Hope is beginning to doubt. The pressure is constant. Every decision scrutinized, every mistake magnified, every success attributed to luck rather than skill. She leads Crimson Hollow well—
