Malcolm's POV

She was asleep. I could tell by the way her breathing had evened out and her eyes were closed and she nestled in my arms. She looked different when she was asleep.

I was on my back with her curled into my side and my arm around her and I was looking at the ceiling.I had not slept. I was not tired. My mind was doing what it always did, which was process everything and turn it over and look at it from different angles. I could not turn it off. I had tried for years.

I looked down at

Ruby's POVEverything happened fast after that.June had hit the ground and the sound she made when she landed was not loud but it was the kind of sound that went through you. I was at her side before I had fully decided to move."June," I said. I crouched down and put my hand on her back. "June, can you hear me?"She did not answer. Her face was turned to the side and her eyes were open but she was not looking at anything. Her hands were pressed to her lower stomach and she was breathing in short uneven pulls."Someone call an ambulance," I shouted toward the entrance of the restaurant.A man near the door already had his phone out. Someone else came out from inside and stopped when they saw June on the ground."What happened?" the man asked."She needs an ambulance now," I said. I did not have time to explain the rest of it.I looked at June's face. Her jaw was tight and her skin had gone pale in a way that was not normal. She was still pressing both hands to her belly and I could s

“The girl is mean for no reason at all,” I muttered.Sandra laughed shortly. “I couldn't be bothered by what happened to her.”We continued with the rest of our meal, then Sandra spoke again. “Is it just my eyes or do you actually look different?”“How?”“You look more stunning.”“Well, I've actually been going to the gym.”Sandra dropped down her cutlery and looked at me. “Ruby, promise me that you aren't still so concerned about your body. It isn't a crime to be chubby, you don't have to become thin.”“I'm not working out to become thin. I just want to remain fit.”She sighed once again. “I hope so.”My phone rang. I looked at the screen and saw that it was the driver calling me. I picked his call.“Hello, ma'am, Mr. Malcolm was calling to ask where you are and why I haven't brought you back yet.”“Oh. I'm still inside the restaurant. You'd still have to wait longer.”“Okay, ma'am. Thank you. I'll relay the information to him.”“Who is that?” Sandra asked.“The driver. Malcolm assig

Sandra pulled her plate closer to herself and was already digging into her meal. I picked up the glass of wine and was about to drink when Sandra halted me.She held her own wine glass as well. “We need to toast,” she said as she held her glass.I smiled and held out my glass too. “Here's to the wonderful experience Ruby had.” I laughed at Sandra's statement. Our glasses clinked and then I drank mine and settled the glass down.“What about your boyfriend? You haven’t said much about him?” I asked.“Oh. Josh. We're having some misunderstanding so nothing is happening between us right now. He had been a total douchebag for the past few weeks.”“Awww. That's bad.” I said and took another sip of my wine.Sandra shrugged. “Shit happens.”I was about to take another sip of my wine before I noticed someone familiar walk through the door. Although she was wearing sunglasses, I could tell that it was June. She walked to an empty table and sat.She took off her sunglasses as she sat down and a

I paused to think about how exactly I should phrase the response. I knew that once I told Sandra about this, she would be excited and might even try calling me. She was my best friend who liked me even before my own wolf liked me. I wanted to tell her that I and Malcolm have had sex.I took a deep breath and typed it. “Malcolm and I have had sex.”Her reply came almost immediately. “What? You don't mean it. Tell me you're lying.”“I'm damn serious, Sandra. It happened yesterday.”She responded with an emoji showing shock and accompanied it with a text. “I can't believe it. How was it?”Like I had guessed, she called me. I quickly declined the call and went back to text her. “I am currently at work. I'll call you later.”Her reply came again. “OMG. I can't believe this. We should definitely meet after work to talk about this.”She didn't give me time to reply before she sent another message. “Relish Bar by 6 p.m.”I responded simply with an “Okay.”She reacted to my message with a thum

I arrived at work, but with a driver taking me there in my car. Malcolm had insisted that I go to work with the driver. He kept insisting about my safety and how having a driver waiting for me would be safer for me. I finally had to give in.I had touched the flowers that he gave me for longer than I should have and the perfume from the flowers was still on my fingers. I thought about it. They smelled nice. A thought crept into my mind and it was about the contract period. This was the third month of the contract. I had nine more months to go and I couldn't wait to see the events that would unfold during that time.In the space of these three months, I had found my father, repaid my mother's loan and cut her off, drew some more and got hired for a job at the museum. The driver finally pulled up at my workplace. As I opened the door, I could sense the difference in the atmosphere. A few items had been shifted from their original place and some of the artworks weren't in their usual pla

“I know I sound very different from the wolf who has been taunting you for almost all your life,” She paused, and I swallowed hard. Joey had been quiet these days, but the least thing I expected was that she had been staying quiet to prepare an apology to me.She went quiet for a while after her earlier statement. Maybe it was a bit hard for her to say. I didn't say anything. I simply waited for her to continue talking. She did something like a low purr and continued. “I kind of believe in you right now. Don't get me wrong or think that I'm an opportunist who only wants you now that you have secured a contractual relationship with Malcolm or now that you're chasing your art dreams. That is not the case. I know I always wanted a body that reflected my strengths, and I'm sorry for all the ways I made you feel because you didn't fit the image I wanted.”She paused and I hesitated to respond. I was still processing everything Joey was saying. I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact

A tall man in a prison guard uniform walked towards us.“Coffee?” He asked, holding out a tray with two mugs while he held another which belonged to him in his other hand.“Thank you,” I muttered as I took mine. “No, thanks.” Millicent objected.“Really? This is the best black coffee you can find,

I dialed Millicent's number, and almost immediately, the call ended. I stared at the phone screen to see that her line was busy.I was about to set my phone aside when her call came in.Without giving it much thought, I answered the call and clutched the phone closer to my ear.“Good morning Ruby.

********Moon walkers camp. When I was just seven, my mother who had been barely taking care of me claimed that she was tired. I relentlessly stared at where the man sat, as though my hard stare would cause him to appear. If he was a clone creature who had disappeared into thin air, then I would be less troubled. Clone creature? Things like that only existed in comic books.I strode towards where the man sat, my face shado
