LOGINAmelia
I dream of being torn apart by the wild rogue wolf. Its eyes glow right red, it foams around the mouth and ignores every plea for mercy that I manage to force past my lips.
Aside, stands Logan and Katherine, holding each other like long lost lovers and mocking me as this is the exact end someone like me deserves.
When I wake up in a hospital room, surrounded by white walls and the stinging stench of antiseptic, for a moment there, I wonder if it would be better if the dream was true.
My whole body aches, my head is pounding and my heart beats faster than ever before, yet the only thought I can focus on is my baby.
My trembling hands frantically run over my belly as I check for blood, yet find none. I can’t let go of the fear, refuse to, until my wolf stirs and gently mutters, “I protected the baby. Don’t worry, Amelia, our pup is safe and sound, I made sure of it.”
I instantly let out a small breath of relief and answer, “thank you. I don’t know what I’d do if we lost the baby, don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have you.”
“I’ll always be there for you and the pup. Always, Amelia. No matter what, you’re not losing me, not if I have any say in it.” My wolf says softly and I almost break down in tears as soon as those words leave her.
Nobody, and I mean it, nobody has ever stood by me through thick and thin. I’ve never had anyone in my corner the way I have her.
Others might never understand the feeling, but to spend your entire life as an outsider in the pack and learn how to live with the thought of being hated just because you were born is not easy.
She spends a couple of minutes whispering reassurances to me and goes completely silent when the doctor enters the room.
Dr. Morris, the same woman who gave me the happy news just a day ago, clears her throat and looks at the patient chart, then grumbles, “Amelia, Beta Marcel brought you here and insisted you’re given an antidote for rogue’s venom. I don’t know why, don’t ask me, but he was very clear about his demands. Anyway, you’re fine now.”
I look at her and wonder how a person can do such a drastic change in their behavior in a matter of little to no time at all. Just yesterday she treated me with kindness, acted so supportive and spoke to me with such a soft tone, only to sound like I’m nothing but inconvenience in her way today.
“For now, all you have to do is rest for a few days and you’ll be as good as new,” she adds and I can almost taste the disdain that laces her words.
The doctor looks up from the clipboard, gives me a quick onceover, frowns and turns to leave the room.
“Wait,” I call out before she can leave. “Is Luna Katherine okay? Did she get hurt? How about the pack members? Are there any injuries?”
Dr. Morris looks over her shoulder and speaks. “Luna is unharmed, the Alpha made sure his mate didn’t get a single scratch during the attack. The pack members who were attending the funeral didn’t get hurt either. It’s only you who’s being dramatic again.” She scoffs dismissively.
Now, her attitude is completely different from what it was when she thought I was Luna of this pack. I can’t help but feel bitterness about her change—she’s literally sorting patients based on who they are.
Luna Kathrine gets respect, Amelia gets treated like shit.
She grips the door handle and stops again, “Ah, almost forgot to mention. Since our Alpha is a respectable man and an admirable leader, he went out of his way to order a full-body checkup for you. You should be grateful.”
“No!” I blurt out as panic surges through every nerve ending in my body. If I agree for this checkup, Logan and the pack will find out about the pregnancy and now that Katherine’s back, I’m sure she would force me to do something that I won’t like.
As Dr. Morris turns to look at me, the frown on her face deepening, she spoke again. “And why on Earth would you refuse a checkup? First of all, that’s our Alpha’s command, you can’t just disobey him because you can’t take being poked with a few needles. Second, you won’t get hurt, stop overreacting and just get done with it. The sooner we start, the sooner it ends.”
I try to come up with believable lies until finally, I settle on one that sounds reasonable. “Okay, sorry. I apologize for any disrespect I might have shown. The Alpha knows better. But before we start, is it okay if I use the bathroom?”
She lets out an annoyed sound and nods at the door leading to the bathroom. “Okay, fine, just don’t take too much time.”
As soon as she exits the room, I get off the bed, ignore the dizziness and stumble to the bathroom. I lock the door behind me, open the window and climb out of it, sneaking away from the hospital grounds unnoticed.
Dragging my wounded body home, I struggle to stay awake and unnoticed, but this is something I absolutely must do. I just need to get back, pack as quickly as I can and leave the territory.
I’m not a fool, I know rejection is inevitable with Katherine being back and claiming her rightful place as Luna of this pack. But even with understanding how things are about to change for me, when I finally reach the house and push the door open, my heart still shatters all over again.
LoganOnly one day passes since we find out about what’s going on in Deadfang and suddenly, our life is turned completely upside down. I’m barely awake, sipping my coffee, when I’m approached by one of Derrick’s guards, who frantically reports to me about the rumors of a plague that’s spreading in Deadfang. In a matter of hours, it seems the entire kingdom has heard about it. “What else have you heard?” I ask him and set my cup aside. This is no time to enjoy a simple morning ritual, we’re facing possibly the biggest betrayal in decades. The guard looks around, as if scared to be overhead sharing gossip and leans closer, lowering his voice to a mere whisper, “the men that were sent to Deadfang started returning to the Capital.” “Are they in the hospital now?” I ask, ready to take off with the tiny hope one of them could be aware enough to share more information. “Yes and no, Alpha,” the man mutters and averts his gaze. I grab his shoulders and shake him a little. “Tell me. What
LoganI’ve been avoiding everyone after I watched Amelia leave with Ethan. No matter how much I try to reassure myself she knows what she’s doing and she’ll be safe, I can’t help but worry. Irritated, I receive the mind-link from Derrick that summons me to the conference room. When I arrive, Derrick is already sitting at the end of the large table, Beta Richard stands behind him and Marcel enters the room soon after me. I sit down and wait, eager to find out how much has changed barely a day after they left. Marcel stands before us and clears his throat. “All Alphas and Lunas have reported safe returns to their packs already.”Derrick, although still not fully healed after the poisoning, nods and looks satisfied with the update. “How is Ethan handling the elite warriors he won from the king?” I ask Marcel, truly curious about what he might be doing. The whole idea of sending those men with him was mainly to have our eyes on every step Ethan might make back home, so every small th
AmeliaAfter I leave Professor Michael’s office, I return to the waiting room where Sandy is sitting, reading a magazine. As if sensing me, she looks up from the pages and smiles. “Finally, I was starting to get worried,” she announces and sets the magazine aside, then walks up to me. “There’s no need to worry about me,” I assure her. “Ready to go home?” “Of course,” she exclaims cheerfully. “But tell me, how did your check-up go? Is everything okay with the baby? When Sophia told me you need more tests, she didn’t specify if anything’s wrong.” The guards follow us out of the hospital and lead us towards a waiting car. “The baby is okay,” I assure her. “Sophia just ordered more tests to be completely sure I’m not exhausting myself. As we get in the car, I realize we’re going back to the large house Ethan moved me into before we had to leave for the Capital. I can’t help but wonder why, especially now that I don’t have to hide and everyone knows my death was a ploy while I hid in
AmeliaSeconds drag along until eventually, Professor Michael sighs and meets my gaze again. “A healing gift like that is both a blessing and a curse, Amelia,” he finally whispers. I arch an eyebrow, trying my best to follow his words and figure out what he’s trying to say. “If the identity of a gifted healer is exposed, every pack leader will fight tooth and nail to ensure they ‘own’ such a powerful person,” Michael adds. Judging by the weariness in his tone and the way he keeps avoiding my gaze, I have a feeling he has lived through something awful and is speaking from experience. Clearing my throat, I remind myself to stay calm before I speak up. “Professor, tell me, did you ever meet the previous gifted healer?” Not only do I want to learn more about my abilities, but I truly hope this person, whoever they are, could teach me something too.Maybe they can help me develop an antidote for the new toxin that almost killed Derrick. If the poison is still out there, I wouldn’t ha
AmeliaFor the rest of the drive back to Deadfang, both Ethan and I remain silent. He seems to have a lot on his mind and honestly, I struggle to come to terms with his previous words. I might be paranoid, but they did sound like a threat.“You’re not paranoid,” my wolf grumbles. “And if you are, so am I because those words did sound like a rather dark warning.” I agree with her but don’t continue the conversation, fearing Ethan could notice how distracted I get and start questioning me. When we finally arrive at Deadfang, I feel like I can breathe again. “Let me accompany you back home,” Ethan says as he helps the driver lift the bags out of the trunk. “Actually,” I drag the word and clear my throat. “I need to head to the hospital. I promised Sophia I’ll get a check-up as soon as I return.” Ethan looks at me for a long moment, searching my eyes for lies and eventually nods in agreement. “I’ll go with you.” I should’ve predicted he might want to be there, but I have more plan
AmeliaWhen I approached the border with Ethan at my side and noticed Logan standing in the distance, a surge of raw, true happiness spread through my chest. Of course, knowing how much Ethan and Logan despise each other, I hide how I feel, mainly because I want to avoid unnecessary fights this close to our leaving. When Katherine announces she has something to say to Ethan, I don’t really pay much attention to her words. “Maybe it’s something serious,” my wolf mutters from the back of my head. “Logan hates Ethan and Katherine still acts like Logan’s Luna. Something feels off.” While her concerns are valid, I can’t focus on a word. The only thing that seems of importance to me right now is that I get to spend a few more moments with Logan. I’m so grateful he came here to see me, so I don’t spare a glance at Ethan as Logan places a gentle hand on my back and guides me aside, so we’re not overheard. Once we’re out of everyone’s earshot, Logan turns and looks down at me. The longin
