The cold brass of the doorknob bit into Darren’s palm, but he couldn’t move. He stood frozen by the slightly ajar door, every breath caught in his chest as the words from within wrapped around him like a noose.

Inside, Vito’s voice was still low, gravelly, and unaware of the silent audience just outside.

“You know I wanted to let him do his own things, give him room to grow,” Vito said into the phone. “But seeing as he’s turning now, I think it’s high time I stepped in.
