Chapter 1 My Husband's Rejection

Author: Sonia
My name is Wendy, and I am a thirty-year-old stay-at-home wife.

When Mark and I first started dating, he treated me with patience and warmth. He remembered small anniversaries, brought me flowers after work, and made me believe I had chosen a dependable man. After we married, he handled most of the outside business while I managed the house, the bills, and his daily life.

For several years, our marriage looked peaceful from the outside. Mark was handsome, successful, and polite in front of everyone. Friends often said I was lucky to have a husband who worked hard and rarely raised his voice.

But six months ago, everything changed.

Mark started coming home late almost every night. When I asked about his schedule, he always said the company had new projects. At first, I believed him. Work pressure was normal, and I did not want to become the kind of wife who questioned everything.

On our wedding anniversary, I prepared dinner and waited for him at home. I hoped we could sit down and talk about why we had become so distant.

Mark came home close to midnight. He barely looked at the food on the table before putting his briefcase down and saying he was exhausted.

I tried to speak gently. 'Mark, can we talk? We have barely spent time together lately.'

He rubbed his temples and frowned. 'You stay home all day. You have no idea how tiring my work is. Can you stop making everything about yourself?'

I froze. I had expected fatigue, maybe impatience, but not contempt.

I said, 'I am not making trouble. I just want to know what happened to us.'

Mark turned away. 'Nothing happened. I am tired. Let me sleep.'

That night, he slept with his back to me. The distance between us felt wider than the bed itself.

The next morning, I woke to the sound of tools in the yard. Mark had already left again.

Annoyed and unsettled, I walked to the window and looked outside. A young yard worker was trimming the overgrown hedges near the fence. He looked strong, capable, and focused on his work. I remembered Mark mentioning that he had hired someone new to handle the garden because he no longer wanted me dealing with outside workers alone.

The yard worker noticed me at the window and raised his hand politely. 'Ma'am, are you Mrs. Wendy?'

I opened the window a little. 'Yes. You must be Samuel.'

He smiled. 'That's right. Mr. Mark asked me to clear the weeds, trim the branches, and check the garden path. There are a few places where I may need your confirmation.'

His tone was respectful, so I did not think much of it. I put on a jacket and went downstairs.

At that moment, I had no idea Samuel had not come to our house by chance. He had been hired by Mark for a purpose far beyond yard work.

With my parents' support, I filed for divorce the next morning.Mark tried to deny everything at first. He claimed the recordings were misunderstood, the photos were innocent, and Samuel was an unreliable witness. But the evidence was too complete. The dashcam audio contained his plan in his own words. Samuel's recording proved he had paid someone to frame me. The hotel photos and timestamps showed his repeated meetings with Claire. The payment records tied everything together. My lawyer used every piece carefully.Three months later, the court ruled in my favor. Mark's attempt to frame me heavily damaged his position. I kept the house and most of the marital assets. Mark left with almost nothing.Claire disappeared from his life as soon as it became clear he had lost the case.I heard later that Mark tried to rebuild his reputation, but people no longer trusted him the way they once had. A man who could plot against his own wife could not expect easy sympathy. After the divorce, I cha

A week later, Mark told me we would have a guest for dinner.'Who?' I asked.'Samuel,' he said casually. 'He used to do yard work here. I thought we could thank him properly.'I nearly laughed. So the second stage of his plan had arrived.I pretended to know nothing. I cooked dinner, set the table, and waited.Samuel arrived on time. When he saw me, he gave the smallest nod. Mark did not notice.During dinner, Mark tried hard to guide the conversation. He praised Samuel, told me to sit near him, and kept creating moments where we would appear close if someone took a photograph from the right angle.I played along without crossing any line. I stayed polite, calm, and distant. Then Mark poured drinks for everyone.I had already expected this. Before dinner, I had switched my glass with a clean one and kept a small recorder hidden under the table.Mark urged me, 'Wendy, have a little. Everyone is enjoying the evening.'I smiled and pretended to drink. After a while, I leaned back and acte

From that day on, I began watching Mark carefully. Before this, I had never checked his phone or email. I believed marriage required trust. But trust did not mean closing my eyes while someone prepared a trap beneath my feet.Mark had many habits I had ignored before. He always turned his phone screen away when I entered the room. He slept with the phone under his pillow. Sometimes he smiled at messages, then deleted the conversation immediately. When he showered one evening, I tried to check his phone. There was nothing useful. Every chat had been cleared. His call records were clean. Even his photo album looked carefully sorted.Mark was cautious.I contacted a lawyer and explained the situation. The lawyer told me the messages from Samuel were useful, but not enough to prove Mark's affair or guarantee that he would leave with nothing.'You need direct evidence,' the lawyer said. 'Proof of his relationship with another woman, proof of his plan to frame you, and proof that he acted in

My hands turned cold as I stared at the phone. The message preview read: 'Did it work? Why did I not see you inside?'I should not have opened someone else's phone, but the words involved my husband and my own home. I pressed Samuel's fingerprint from the service form he had left on the table, and the screen unlocked.Three messages sat at the top of the conversation.[Did it work? Why did I not see you inside?][After this is done, I will pay you five thousand dollars. Then stay away from my house.][My wife has been lonely and emotional lately. Keep approaching her, create a scene that looks improper, and make sure there is something I can use as evidence.]I read the messages again and again, unable to breathe.Mark had hired Samuel not simply to maintain the yard, but to create the appearance that I was behaving improperly with another man. He wanted evidence. He wanted a reason to blame me.A few minutes later, Samuel returned to retrieve his phone. When he saw it in my hand, his

When I stepped into the yard, Samuel was standing beside a row of tall shrubs. He pointed to the branches near the second-floor window.'Mr. Mark said these branches block too much light. Should I cut them shorter?' he asked.I looked up and nodded. 'Yes, but don't cut too much. I still want the yard to look natural.'Samuel worked quickly. He seemed familiar with landscaping, and within minutes, the messy corner looked much cleaner. Then he asked me to check the side path. Several stones had loosened, and the weeds around them made the walkway uneven.I crouched down to look. 'This part really needs fixing. Mark never mentioned it to me.'Samuel glanced toward the house. 'Mr. Mark gave me a general instruction. He said if anything else needed attention, I should ask you directly.'The sentence sounded ordinary, but something about it felt deliberate. Mark rarely cared about small household details. Why had he suddenly arranged a yard worker and given him so much access to our home?Be
