Chapter 1 My Husband's Rejection

My name is Wendy, and I am a thirty-year-old stay-at-home wife.

When Mark and I first started dating, he treated me with patience and warmth. He remembered small anniversaries, brought me flowers after work, and made me believe I had chosen a dependable man. After we married, he handled most of the outside business while I managed the house, the bills, and his daily life.

For several years, our marriage looked peaceful from the outside. Mark was handsome, successful, and polite in front of everyone. Friends often said I was lucky to have a husband who worked hard and rarely raised his voice.

But six months ago, everything changed.

Mark started coming home late almost every night. When I asked about his schedule, he always said the company had new projects. At first, I believed him. Work pressure was normal, and I did not want to become the kind of wife who questioned everything.

On our wedding anniversary, I prepared dinner and waited for him at home. I hoped we could sit down and talk about why we had become so distant.

Mark came home close to midnight. He barely looked at the food on the table before putting his briefcase down and saying he was exhausted.

I tried to speak gently. 'Mark, can we talk? We have barely spent time together lately.'

He rubbed his temples and frowned. 'You stay home all day. You have no idea how tiring my work is. Can you stop making everything about yourself?'

I froze. I had expected fatigue, maybe impatience, but not contempt.

I said, 'I am not making trouble. I just want to know what happened to us.'

Mark turned away. 'Nothing happened. I am tired. Let me sleep.'

That night, he slept with his back to me. The distance between us felt wider than the bed itself.

The next morning, I woke to the sound of tools in the yard. Mark had already left again.

Annoyed and unsettled, I walked to the window and looked outside. A young yard worker was trimming the overgrown hedges near the fence. He looked strong, capable, and focused on his work. I remembered Mark mentioning that he had hired someone new to handle the garden because he no longer wanted me dealing with outside workers alone.

The yard worker noticed me at the window and raised his hand politely. 'Ma'am, are you Mrs. Wendy?'

I opened the window a little. 'Yes. You must be Samuel.'

He smiled. 'That's right. Mr. Mark asked me to clear the weeds, trim the branches, and check the garden path. There are a few places where I may need your confirmation.'

His tone was respectful, so I did not think much of it. I put on a jacket and went downstairs.

At that moment, I had no idea Samuel had not come to our house by chance. He had been hired by Mark for a purpose far beyond yard work.
