Chapter 1

My eyes burned as I sat frozen, my mind spinning out of control.

My son, Liam, huffed in frustration.

“Mom, say something. Dad gave you a choice. You’re not as young or pretty as Aunt Abigail. Are you that slow, too?”

A sharp ache pierced my chest. I couldn't breathe.

Liam’s irritation only grew.

“There you go, crying again. You’re so pathetic. This is why I hate being seen with you.”

He rolled his eyes.

“Oh, and last week’s parent-teacher conference? It wasn't canceled. I had Aunt Abigail go instead.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I stared at him in disbelief.

In all six years of elementary school, Liam had never let me attend a single school meeting.

When he finally asked me to go last week, I was so thrilled I couldn't sleep.

Then came the sudden, violent allergic reaction on the morning of the event.

Desperate not to be late, I swallowed a handful of emergency pills and tried to push through it.

Liam had acted shocked that I was so sick, then casually claimed the meeting was pushed back.

Now, the pieces finally clicked together.

Seeing how pale I turned, Danny spoke up, completely unbothered.

“You guessed right. I put the allergen in your food.”

He shrugged. “Don’t blame your son. It wasn't going to kill you.”

Wasn't going to kill me?

I let out a shaky, bitter laugh.

He had no idea.

The medication only delayed the reaction.

That night, my fever spiked. I threw up until I was dry-heaving, unable to get off the floor.

If I hadn't managed to dial 911 right before passing out, I would be in a grave.

And where were they while I was fighting for my life?

They were out watching fireworks with Abigail.

When they came home the next day and saw me hooked up to IVs, Liam just laughed.

“Mom is so weak. She’s just in her thirties, but she acts like a grandma.”

My heart bled.

When we got home, Danny sent Liam to his room.

For a brief second, I thought he was going to apologize.

Instead, he turned to face me. His eyes were dark, unreadable.

“There is one condition if you don't want to get a divorce.

“When Abigail has her baby, you’re going to help raise it.”

The words shattered me.

“What?” I managed to whisper.

“Abigail’s pregnant. Two months.”

Two months ago. The exact week my mother passed away.

Danny ignored my deathly pale face and continued casually.

“You were sobbing on the phone. I knew you needed me. But Abigail was clingy that night, and I couldn't pull myself away.”

A wild scream tore from my throat. I swung my hand and slapped him as hard as I could across the face.

“You monster!”

Danny’s head snapped sideways. He slowly turned back to look at me, his eyes dead and cold.

“I know I’m a bastard. But you’re no saint either, are you? You cheated on me first.”

Lightning flashed outside the window, illuminating the raw horror on my face.

It had been five years. I thought I had buried that trauma.

But hearing him bring it up so casually ripped the scar wide open.

Back when Danny first started his business, he was broke and desperate.

One night, he came home dead drunk and demanded I deliver an urgent file to a potential investor at a luxury hotel.

I hesitated. The location made me uncomfortable.

Danny snapped. He grabbed my shoulders, shouting in my face.

“Do you have any idea what I’m going through for this family? Why are you so selfish?

“How are we supposed to give Liam a good life if you won't even do this simple favor?!”

As I was left with no choice, I went to the hotel.

Some damage could never be undone.Danny searched my face, a desperate flicker of hope in his eyes.“Does this make it better, Elena? If it’s not enough, hit me. Do whatever you want to me.”I ignored him, turning away to sign my own discharge papers.Danny’s eyes turned bloodshot. He shuffled behind me like a broken shadow, begging in a hushed, pathetic whisper.“Elena, please. Can we just pretend none of this ever happened? I love you. You know I love you.”“Meet me at the courthouse this afternoon,” I said coldly.“No. I’m not signing those divorce papers.”“Then I’ll see you in court.”I walked out and climbed into my car.In the side mirror, I watched father and son standing alone in the parking lot. Danny suddenly dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands as his shoulders shook violently. Liam hovered beside him, completely lost, before breaking down into sobs himself.I felt nothing. Not a single trace of emotion. That afternoon, Danny predictably refus

When I finally woke up, it was late afternoon the following day.Even though the scandal had already been pulled down from the headlines, the damage left in its wake was impossible to hide.Danny was terrified. He scrambled across the room, desperately trying to snatch my phone out of my hands.“Elena, don't read that! It’s all malicious lies! Just rest. I’ll take care of everything, I promise.”“Let’s get a divorce.”The phone slipped from his trembling hands and shattered against the floor. From the very beginning, he was the only one pushing for an end to our marriage. I had spent years running away from the truth, begging him to stay. Now, there was nothing left inside me.All I wanted was to be free.I looked him in the eye and repeated myself.“Danny. I want a divorce.”“No,” he stammered, shaking his head frantically. “No, I won't sign anything.”I stared at him, exhausted by the absurdity of it all.“From the moment you set me up five years ago, Danny, we were

Abigail went on and on, making it sound as if she had only Danny’s best interests at heart.Yet Danny felt no gratitude.“Why was your shirt in Elena’s car?” he asked out of nowhere.Abigail’s mind went completely blank for a second. She squeezed her eyes shut before opening them with an expression of pure confusion.“I have no idea,” she stammered. “Maybe I left it behind after riding in her car before?”“There was blood on it.”Abigail looked even more bewildered.“What? Why would there be blood? Did something happen?”Danny stared at Abigail’s innocent face, feeling a wave of deep, bone-weary exhaustion. He let out a heavy sigh, looking entirely drained.“I’m going to take a shower. Let’s just go to sleep early tonight.”They lay in bed together. Late into the night, Danny slowly opened his eyes.He quietly grabbed Abigail’s phone from the nightstand and slipped out of the room.He unlocked the screen and began searching through her apps.Abigail had wiped her text

“Elena!”Danny scooped me into his arms and rushed me straight to the emergency room.“She was three months pregnant! How could she be hurt this badly?!”Under the doctor’s fierce reprimand, Danny’s face turned ghastly white. He had no idea. I had never told him.In fact, I hadn't even known myself.Danny collapsed onto the cold hospital floor outside the operating room. He looked down at his bloodstained hands. There was more blood on him now than the night I took a blade for him.He raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face.I had been by his side for so many years. How could he have hurt me like this?Tears welled in the corners of his eyes, his fingers trembling uncontrollably.Suddenly, his ringing phone jolted him. He numbly pressed accept.Liam’s cheerful voice came through the speaker.“Dad! We found Aunt Abigail! She just passed out on the side of the road while buying groceries. She’s completely fine now!”Liam rambled on happily. Sensing Dan

My breakdown lasted until the middle of the night. I wept and laughed like a madwoman.Whether from extreme psychological shock or sheer physical exhaustion, a wave of nausea hit me. I threw up uncontrollably, then curled into a tight ball on the floor, sobbing until I had no tears left.Three days passed in a blur. I barely ate a single bite.Still, I forced myself to clean up and get dressed. I wanted to talk to Danny one last time.I wanted to have a calm, reasonable conversation, even if the odds were slim. The moment I climbed into my car, the driver's side door jerked open. Danny grabbed me by the coat and yanked me violently onto the driveway.“Ah! What are you doing?!”I hit the pavement hard, a cry of pain escaping my throat.Danny’s eyes were bloodshot, his entire body trembling on the brink of absolute rage.“Abigail is missing,” he snarled. “You did this, didn't you?”I froze, a sense of absurdity washing over me.Before I could deny it, Danny’s gaze darted t

I sat alone on the floor until dawn. When morning came, I pulled myself up and found a knife in the kitchen. I held the standard steel against my wrist, cool and deliberate, tracing the faint blue line of my vein. Before I could press down, the front door crashed open.Danny burst in, his face dark with rage. He completely ignored the blade in my hand and grabbed my arm, his eyes burning with disappointment.“Why? Why would you do something like that?!”My head throbbed after an entire night without sleep. “What are you talking about?” I rasped.Liam’s eyes were bloodshot as he sprinted into the room and threw his body against me.“Aunt Abigail’s house caught fire last night!” he sobbed, pounding his small fists against my legs. “If she hadn't been with us, she would have burned to death!”The sudden impact sent me crashing back onto the floor.A sharp, curdling scream ripped through the living room.I scrambled up, horrified, only to see Liam clutching a gash on his pa
