Chapter 2

Author: Gilded Riches
Leah stood off to the side, quietly sobbing.

"Alan," she choked out, "I just wanted Anna to hold the pups… I never expected her to be so cruel."

Alan's brows knitted together, his face darkening with anger.

"Alan, please, just listen to me," I begged, my voice trembling with desperation. "Leah was the one who placed the pups in my arms and then pushed them away. She—"

"Enough!"

He cut me off sharply, the shock in his eyes hardening into a cold, unforgiving glare.

"What kind of mother would hurt her own child? If you're going to lie, at least make it believable! I saw it with my own eyes. The pups slipped from your arms. You've hated Leah and the pups from the start, and now you've gone too far—"

"That's not true! I swear, I didn't—"

"Don't say another word, Anna. I was wrong to think you and Leah could ever get along."

He refused to listen to anything I had left to say.

"Leah will be discharged tomorrow. She'll stay in the main wing to recover. You should move into the attic for now. It's quiet there, and no one will disturb you. It's better for the pups too."

I gazed at his cold profile, a sharp ache twisting in my chest.

He refused to listen to me, choosing Leah's side without a second thought.

I opened my mouth, but the words got caught in my throat.

His decision was final, leaving no room for me to speak in my defense.

I returned home quietly. As I packed my things, I was struck by how few memories I had gathered over all these years.

Moonlight filtered through the window, falling on a photo I'd accidentally packed away.

It was a picture of Alan and me from the day we formed our mate bond.

We looked so happy.

Who could have imagined it would come to this?

A flood of memories crashed over me.

Alan and I had grown up side by side. For eight years since we bonded as mates, we were the pack's most admired couple.

But everything changed the day he was drugged with an aphrodisiac and ended up sleeping with Leah.

When he woke, he called me right away, his voice laced with panic.

"Anna, I'm so sorry... I was poisoned with an aphrodisiac. While I was unconscious, I mistook Leah for you and made a terrible mistake. But don't worry. I've compensated her, and she won't cause any more problems."

I wanted to believe him.

But before long, Leah came back. Her parents were ill, and she'd turned to Alan for help.

As always, Alan didn't hesitate—something I once cherished deeply. Now, I found myself quietly resenting how dependable he was.

Leah's parents held a feast to thank Alan. At the celebration, someone slipped an aphrodisiac into his wine. With Leah's daring seduction, Alan found himself drawn into another night of passion with her.

When Alan got trapped in a landslide in Northaria, it was the expecting Leah who dug through the rubble with her bare hands to pull him to safety.

Between the blood debt he owed her, her sweet words, and the pups she carried, Alan couldn't bring himself to let her go.

He held me close, his eyes filled with pain and guilt, begging for my forgiveness.

I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat and laid down my terms.

"Either end our mate bond or banish Leah from the pack."

He held my hand tightly. "I can't break our mate bond," he said, "but I also can't turn my back on Leah."

He refused to let go of either of us.

With no other choice, I fled. I threw myself into solitary training, using the endless exertion to silence everything else.

It wasn't until Leah gave birth to her twin pups that Darian and Thalia forced me to come back.

I had to confront the two lives that weighed so heavily on my heart.

In the darkness, I pulled out my phone and finally typed the message I should have sent long ago.

"Let's break our mate bond."

Before ten minutes had passed, hurried footsteps sounded outside the door.

Alan rushed in, sweat shining on his forehead. "Anna! I won't agree to breaking our mate bond!"

I sat there quietly, my voice barely a whisper. "Let it go, Alan. I'm just so exhausted."

"I told you, Leah will never come between us!" His voice trembled with desperation.

Just as he reached for my hand, his phone rang sharply, breaking the moment.

It was Leah, her voice trembling with tears.

"Alan! The pups are running a high fever after their fall. The healer says they're in critical condition!"

Alan's face was drained of color.

He looked at me, then down at his phone.

"Anna…" he began hesitantly. "I have to check on the pups. You know they're the future of our pack. I hope you understand."

This was my marriage—

Even something as crucial as breaking our mate bond was pushed aside for Leah and her pups.

Tears slipped down my cheeks as a painful truth settled in.

No matter how tightly I held on, some things were never meant to stay.

Alan froze, the color draining from his face. The hospital room grew eerily still. The doctor spoke gently, "The patient has a history of wolfsbane poisoning and has undergone heart treatment. Combined with the oxygen deprivation from drowning, this could result in temporary memory loss.""Heart treatment?" Alan barked, grabbing the doctor by the collar. "What heart treatment?"He turned to me, his voice trembling with emotion. "Anna… I'm your mate. I'm Alan Thorne."I tilted my head, a wry smile playing on my lips. "If you're really my mate, then tell me…"My eyes shifted to the she-wolf near the door, holding a pup in her arms. "Why did you father twins with another Omega?"Alan's face darkened with guilt as he hesitated. "Because… Six months ago, someone drugged me with an aphrodisiac… She just happened to be there…"I let out a cold, bitter laugh. "An aphrodisiac? Is that the best you've got?"Even if the first time was an accident… What about the second? That aphrodisiac

Life in Jack's territory was warm and peaceful. My skin gradually regained its healthy glow, and my body grew stronger with every day that passed. That afternoon, I was lounging in a garden chair, basking in the golden sunlight. Suddenly, I heard a soft rustle from behind the bushes."John, keep your voice down! You'll give us away!""I just want to see what kind of she-wolf could have stolen Jack's heart."I couldn't help but chuckle. "Are you two looking for me?"An elderly couple stepped out, gently nudging one another. Penny Graymoor playfully smacked John Steel on the shoulder. "This is all your fault!" she teased. They settled on either side of me, their eyes lighting up as they took me in."You're truly beautiful! No wonder Jack fell for you the moment he saw you. He's turned down so many she-wolves before—"Penny quickly cut in, "Don't mind him. Jack might seem like a flirt, but he's loyal through and through.""We were always worried about him. He's almost 30 and stil

Alan's heart had grown unbearably heavy lately.Though the pups' illness was finally behind him, I hadn't reached out in what seemed like an eternity. That day in the attic haunted him still—the image of my pale face, the trembling of my fingers, and the distant words I'd barely whispered. "Let's just dissolve our mate bond."After all this time, Alan assumed I had finally moved on.He pulled out his phone and dialed the number he knew by heart."I'm sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."The chilling, automated voice struck him like a harsh blow. On social media, my avatar had turned gray, and the message feed confirmed he'd been blocked."Anna?" he whispered, his fingers trembling with disbelief. In all the years we'd been mates, I'd never fully shut him out like this—not even in my angriest moments.Alan pulled up to the pack's council hall and stormed inside. "Where's Luna Anna?" he demanded. The pack members looked at each other, visibly tense. "Lun

"Wolfsbane has invaded your organs. It's even reached your heart," Jack said through gritted teeth, his fingers unconsciously curling into fists."Anna, you should be thankful your body was strong enough to endure this. How have you managed to survive all these years?"I couldn't figure out what had made him so angry. The treatment was unbearable. Every time I curled up in pain, Jack held my shoulders firmly to keep me steady. While taking my medicine that day, my phone buzzed unexpectedly. Leah had shared a new update on social media. In a collage of photos, she wore my nightgown, lying on the very bed that used to be mine. The last image was of the nursery, accompanied by the caption: "Thanks to a certain someone who gave up their spot, this place finally feels like home."Those images haunted me without end, replaying over and over in my mind. That night, I tossed and turned, the pain denying me any rest.Suddenly, a piece of blueberry candy was pressed to my lips, the sweet

A strong, steady hand reached out to me, the fingertips still streaked with fresh blood.I looked up and met a pair of gray-green eyes, glimmering with a touch of amusement. In the dim rain-soaked night, his gaze held a soft, almost gentle glow—though I hadn't forgotten how deadly he'd been just moments earlier.I recognized him instantly. Jack Steel—an Alpha of the Western Moonfang pack and Alan's longtime rival.Within the werewolf circles, his name was notorious. He was known as a reckless, untamed Alpha, never seen without a trail of women by his side.Whispers spread that he had thrown himself into a life of indulgence, abandoning the honor and duty his position once upheld.Alan would always scowl at the mere mention of his name. "Jack's nothing but a shameless drifter. No Alpha in the werewolf community takes him seriously."I'd seen Jack once before at a pack summit. His beauty was almost otherworldly, but the sight of him with a heavily made-up Omega clinging to his arm
