Chapter 4

Author: Liora Z
The room was deathly quiet.

My calmness seemed to piss Rowan off.

She finally focused on me, really looked at me.

Then, her gaze froze on my left hand.

“Why is your wrist bare? Where’s your bond bracelet? What the hell is your problem now?!”

Three rapid-fire questions.

I watched her sudden explosion of anger with cold eyes.

It was the most emotion she’d shown me all day.

Before I could answer, a special ringtone cut through the tension.

Rowan answered the call, her voice instantly shifting from rage to extreme tenderness.

“Alpha…” Finn’s voice was a pathetic whine. “I’m a little hungry… when are you bringing the venison?”

“Right away. Be a good boy and wait for me downstairs.”

Rowan hung up, all her questions for me forgotten.

Without a second thought, she grabbed the fancy food container from the table and strode out the door.

Bang. The front door slammed shut again.

I stood there for a second, then let out a low laugh. I laughed until tears started to well in my eyes.

I turned and walked into the bedroom, pulled out the black suitcase from the closet.

I didn’t pack any of the expensive suits she’d bought me. I didn’t pack a single thing with the Silvermoon Ridge sigil on it.

Just a few simple changes of clothes and my ID.

Around noon, my phone lit up. A message from Rowan.

[I’ll be home at 8 PM sharp tonight. We need to talk.]

I glanced at it, tossed the phone on the bed, and kept packing.

7:00 PM.

I opened a premium delivery app and ordered the honey-glazed venison myself.

7:10 PM.

I zipped the suitcase shut.

A notification popped up. I tapped on Finn’s social media account.

The latest post was a picture from the passenger seat of a high-end custom SUV.

At the edge of the frame, you could just see the driver’s hand on the steering wheel.

On that hand, clear as day, was the Alpha Female's signet ring, the symbol of ultimate power in Silvermoon Ridge.

The caption: [The Alpha Female's passenger seat is always the safest harbor for an Omega.]

I stared at the picture. I felt nothing.

7:40 PM.

I picked up my phone and sent Rowan a message: [Where are you?]

Two minutes later, she replied: [Finn twisted his ankle getting out of the car. He’s crying, it hurts so bad. I have to carry him upstairs. Going to be a little late.]

7:50 PM.

Marcus texted me: [The Alpha-class jet is fueled. Waiting on your command.]

I switched back to my chat with Rowan, my face blank. [Can you be back by eight?]

Her reply was sharp with frustration: [Give me ten more minutes! Caleb, can you stop being so selfish for once? He’s hurt!]

8:00 PM.

Ding-dong. The doorbell rang on time.

I opened the door. A courier handed me a paper bag. “Sir, your roasted venison.”

8:10 PM.

I turned off all the lights in the living room, except for the massive projection wall.

An image flickered to life. It was the recording of our bonding ceremony.

A younger Rowan, dressed in a pristine white tunic, her eyes full of stars.

She was gripping my hand, swearing her oath to the entire pack. “Caleb, without you suppressing your own nature to pave my way, there would be no Rowan. You are my one and only, forever.”

I sat on the sofa in the dark, opened the insulated container, and tore off a piece of venison.

The meat, which should have been rich and juicy, tasted like ash in my mouth.

A single hot tear hit the back of my hand. Then another, and another.

I didn’t wipe them away. I just kept mechanically forcing the meat down.

The tears mixed with the juices, making every bite saltier than the last.

It was a bitter saltiness, like swallowing shards of glass.

But I finished it all. Every last bite.

As the recording of Rowan’s voice echoed the words “one and only, forever,” I threw the empty container perfectly into the trash can.

I stood up, pulled a tissue from the box, and roughly wiped the tears from my face.

The bond, that tether that had been strangling my soul, finally snapped with that last, salty tear.

9:00 PM.

The wind howled across the private airfield.

The engines of the heavy stealth transport jet whined with a low hum. The bodyguards Marcus sent stood respectfully by the boarding ramp, waiting for me.

My phone vibrated one last time.

Rowan’s message, arriving far too late.

[Finn just realized it's his four-month work anniversary. He's crying. I can't leave him. Not coming home tonight.]

Another message followed immediately after:

[I’ll have someone send you that token tomorrow. Stop throwing a fit.]

The wind whipped the hem of my coat.

I stood on the boarding stairs, looking down at the two lines of text on my screen.

Years of being worn down, of waiting. All the hurt and injustice. It all dissolved in the face of such a pathetic, ridiculous excuse.

A laugh of pure relief escaped my lips.

My fingers flew across the screen as I typed my final farewell.

[Don’t bother, Rowan. I’m gone. My flight is tonight. From now on, you have your throne. I’ll get mine.]

Caleb's POVA year later, I returned to my home city as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. I was hosting the North American Werewolf Alliance summit, titled "Echoes of Self."The spotlight was on me at the podium. A sea of reporters pointed their cameras my way."Alpha Caleb, a year ago you chose to leave Silvermoon Ridge. Now you return as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. How does it feel?"I held the microphone, my voice steady. "I don't regret the chances I gave up for a mate. But if I could do it all over again, I would have learned to love myself first, a lot sooner."A murmur of approval went through the crowd. After the interviews, I made my way through the throng, heading for the lounge. At a corner, I stopped.A figure in a dark trench coat stood silently in the shadows.Rowan.She was even thinner than a year ago. Pale, with a permanent exhaustion in her eyes. She saw me and her body went rigid."It's been a long time," I said first. She looked up, meeting my eyes from a few feet away. I

Caleb's POVAfter Rowan went back to Silvermoon Ridge, she was a different person.Jax told me later that she’d had three major lapses in judgment during core pack meetings. The Alpha Female's mental instability, a direct result of the broken bond, almost tanked a major mining deal. The core warriors started talking. Whispering that their Alpha wasn't right.Someone would glance at her wrist, where the bond bracelet used to be. It was empty now.During a meal, she ordered a plate of roasted venison, but when it came, she just stared at it, not taking a single bite.If someone even mentioned the name "Blackpeak," her face would go pale and she'd make an excuse to leave the room.Jax said that after Finn was exiled, he became desperate. He cornered her outside her office and demanded to know why she was blaming him."I didn't force you to forget his anniversary! Why am I taking all the heat for this?" Finn had shouted, his voice full of resentment.Rowan was silent for a long time. Final

Caleb's POVThe lights in the conference room were blinding. The applause was loud enough to shake the building."Project Fission. The most perfect western expansion plan in history." Marcus stood up, his voice filled with undisguised pride. "The representatives from all three neutral territories signed the accords today."I stood in front of the projector screen, looking at the map covered in arrows and data.A month ago, inspired by my own suppressed past, I had written the first line of this strategy.Don't rely on anyone. Grow back from the cracks, by your own strength."The most important echo should come from within yourself." I'd said that in an interview for the Alliance's internal journal. But standing here now, I finally understood the weight of those words. The core warriors rose to their feet, raising their glasses to me.I didn't feel a shred of vanity. Just a profound, solid sense of self.It was late when the victory celebration ended.I threw on my coat and walked out o

Caleb's POVI didn't go after her.Rowan's figure disappearing into the blizzard was like the end of an old, faded movie.I went back inside and locked the door.I opened my laptop and went back to work. The phantom ache from the broken Mate Bond was still there, a ghost in my nerves. But true healing isn't about the pain stopping. It's about feeling the pain and still making the right choice. The next day, I moved into a high-level isolation sector, deeper in the core territory.Security was tight. No one got in without being a core member.I cut off every possible way for Rowan to find me.For the next week, I threw myself into integrating the territories. The Northern Silver Mine and High-Grade Crystal Sector merger. It was the first strategy I spearheaded. At the head of the conference table, I spread out the map. "Their defenses look strong," I said, my voice low. "But they have three fatal flaws. We cut off their supply lines here, here, and here. The balance of power at the nego

Caleb's POVThe plane landed in Blackpeak Territory at dawn. My phone was vibrating off the hook.Sixty-three missed calls. Over a hundred texts. All from Rowan.I stared at the screen for three seconds. Then went to my settings.Block.My finger tapped the button without a single shred of doubt.A huge man stood at the bottom of the jet stairs. Dark coat, eyes sharp as knives."Caleb." He held out a hand. His voice was a low rumble. "I'm Marcus."I shook his hand. As I started to speak, I saw a flicker of shock in his eyes.He let go, taking half a step back. His nostrils flared."That scent you had… the calm, Beta scent…" Marcus’s voice was tight. "It's gone. Replaced by something else. A possessive, Alpha scent. It's nothing like I remember."It was only then I realized. The Alpha presence I had forced down for twenty years was now pouring out of me, unchecked.Pure. Wild. A cold, territorial dominance. The kind of consuming power that only a top-tier Alpha possesses.Marcus grinned

The moment the plane broke through the clouds, the cabin shook. A jolt of turbulence as we crossed the pack border.I didn’t grab the armrest like I used to.I opened my bag. Pulled out my tablet. Opened the note I kept locked behind three passwords. The last page was a list. Dates and descriptions. Every single time Rowan had broken her promise to me in the last three months.1. March 2nd. Forgot to pick me up from work.2. March 9th. Forgot our dinner date....17. Last night. Forgot our Bonding Anniversary.I used to think keeping a list like this was pathetic. Love isn’t a business. You don’t keep a ledger.I was wrong. If I didn’t write it down, her easy “I forgot” would smooth everything over. My hurt would be dismissed. My sacrifices, ignored.Staring at the cold, hard facts on the screen was the only thing stopping me from caving. It was the only thing that forced me to see the truth.I closed the tablet.“Enough,” I whispered. As the plane pulled away from Silvermoon Ridge, a
