Chapter 3

Author: Liora Z
It was 2 AM. The living room was dead silent.

I was on the sofa, my eyelids heavy with exhaustion. I let them close.

Dreams washed over me like a tide.

I was seven, on the back hill. A rogue wolf lunged for me. Rowan threw herself in front of me, her small shoulders trembling, but she wouldn’t move.

I was eighteen, at the graduation ball. Her cheeks were flushed as she held my hand and swore, “Caleb, you’ll always be my number one.”

I was twenty-seven, on the night of her ascension. I forced down my own boiling Alpha blood. I endured the soul-tearing feral agony, just to watch her be crowned under the moonlight.

The vibration of my phone jolted me awake. The screen’s bright white light cut through the dark.

A message from Rowan.

[Banquet ran late. Finn had a bit to drink, he’s not feeling well. I’m taking him home. Not coming back tonight.]

The few short lines were like a dull, rusty knife, slowly sawing through my last shred of hope.

I stared at the text box.

Right above her message was the one I’d typed three hours ago: [Did you get the venison?]

I held down the backspace key. Erased it, letter by letter.

Then, I replied: [Okay.]

I dropped the phone and buried my face in my arms.

In the dark, hot tears slipped out, silently soaking my sleeve.

I’d cried too much these last three months.

This would be the last time.

The next morning, the smell of cooking from the kitchen woke me.

I walked into the dining room and froze.

In the center of the table was a beautifully packaged, insulated food container. It had the logo of that century-old roast house from the east side.

Rowan was in the kitchen, dressed in loungewear. She was humming, and she turned to give me a smile. It was the kind of smile she only ever gave me—relaxed, unguarded, full of affection.

“You’re awake?” Her tone was so natural, so intimate. Like last night’s betrayal had never happened.

I was dazed.

Looking at the container, my dead heart gave a pathetic little flutter.

She bought it. She actually remembered what I said.

I walked to the table and reached for the latch on the container.

The next second, Rowan rushed out and slapped my hand away. Hard.

A red mark instantly appeared on the back of my hand.

The stinging pain shot up my arm, shattering my fantasy.

“What are you doing?” Rowan frowned, clutching the container to her chest like she was protecting a child.

“Isn’t that my venison?” I asked, my voice dry, my throbbing hand hanging at my side.

“Don’t touch it,” she said, her voice sharp with accusation. “Finn mentioned last night he wanted to try this. I waited in line for half an hour this morning to get it.”

The air froze.

It was for Finn.

The roast I’d waited up all night for on our anniversary… was something she’d picked up to please another Omega.

“Breakfast is in the pot,” Rowan said dismissively. “I was up with Finn, I barely slept. Grab a suppressant from the fridge.”

I didn't say anything.

Like a soulless doll, I pulled open the refrigerator.

A blast of cold air hit me.

Right at eye level was a bottle of dark blue, chilled medicine.

I took it out.

I checked the label. There it was, in tiny print: Contains Wolfsbane extract.

Wolfsbane. Harmless in small doses to most wolves, but for one suppressing their Alpha blood, it was a guaranteed trip to hell. Agonizing pain, systemic chaos, madness. It was poison to me.

My fingers started to tremble. The color drained from my face.

When I was eighteen, Rowan had accidentally given me water from a stream contaminated with Wolfsbane.

It was a three-day nightmare. My veins bulged. The feral agony felt like my bones were being ground to dust. I nearly died.

Back then, Rowan had knelt by my hospital bed, her eyes swollen shut from crying.

She grabbed my hand and swore an oath to the Moon Goddess: from that day on, she would check the ingredients on everything she ever bought for me. She would never let me touch a single drop of Wolfsbane again.

Now, because she was busy queuing up for her Omega’s venison, she had casually tossed a bottle of my own personal poison into our fridge.

She forgot everything.

I took the drink and walked back to the table.

Clack.

I slammed the bottle down on the marble tabletop.

Rowan jumped. She looked up, annoyed. “Caleb, what is your problem now?”

“Read the ingredients,” I said, looking down at her.

She picked up the bottle, suspicious.

When her eyes scanned over the word “Wolfsbane,” she froze.

But there was no panic. No guilt. Not even a simple “sorry.”

She just pushed the bottle aside and rubbed her temples, annoyed.

"Stop looking so tragic," she scoffed. "I run a pack. I had to queue for that meat. You think I have time to read labels?"

She tilted her head back, looking up at me, her voice light and dismissive.

“I forgot. Just don't drink it.”

I forgot.

Two words. Erasing the agony of nearly dying at eighteen. Erasing twenty years of history.

I looked at this Alpha Female. So familiar, yet a complete stranger.

For three months, I had been tortured, caught between the memory of what we were and the reality of what she had become.

Now, this bottle of poison had finally shattered the last piece of my heart that still cared.

The room was deathly quiet.

I just watched her. The love that had burned in my eyes for twenty years finally went out.

“I know,” I replied, my voice perfectly calm.

Caleb's POVA year later, I returned to my home city as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. I was hosting the North American Werewolf Alliance summit, titled "Echoes of Self."The spotlight was on me at the podium. A sea of reporters pointed their cameras my way."Alpha Caleb, a year ago you chose to leave Silvermoon Ridge. Now you return as the new Alpha of Blackpeak. How does it feel?"I held the microphone, my voice steady. "I don't regret the chances I gave up for a mate. But if I could do it all over again, I would have learned to love myself first, a lot sooner."A murmur of approval went through the crowd. After the interviews, I made my way through the throng, heading for the lounge. At a corner, I stopped.A figure in a dark trench coat stood silently in the shadows.Rowan.She was even thinner than a year ago. Pale, with a permanent exhaustion in her eyes. She saw me and her body went rigid."It's been a long time," I said first. She looked up, meeting my eyes from a few feet away. I

Caleb's POVAfter Rowan went back to Silvermoon Ridge, she was a different person.Jax told me later that she’d had three major lapses in judgment during core pack meetings. The Alpha Female's mental instability, a direct result of the broken bond, almost tanked a major mining deal. The core warriors started talking. Whispering that their Alpha wasn't right.Someone would glance at her wrist, where the bond bracelet used to be. It was empty now.During a meal, she ordered a plate of roasted venison, but when it came, she just stared at it, not taking a single bite.If someone even mentioned the name "Blackpeak," her face would go pale and she'd make an excuse to leave the room.Jax said that after Finn was exiled, he became desperate. He cornered her outside her office and demanded to know why she was blaming him."I didn't force you to forget his anniversary! Why am I taking all the heat for this?" Finn had shouted, his voice full of resentment.Rowan was silent for a long time. Final

Caleb's POVThe lights in the conference room were blinding. The applause was loud enough to shake the building."Project Fission. The most perfect western expansion plan in history." Marcus stood up, his voice filled with undisguised pride. "The representatives from all three neutral territories signed the accords today."I stood in front of the projector screen, looking at the map covered in arrows and data.A month ago, inspired by my own suppressed past, I had written the first line of this strategy.Don't rely on anyone. Grow back from the cracks, by your own strength."The most important echo should come from within yourself." I'd said that in an interview for the Alliance's internal journal. But standing here now, I finally understood the weight of those words. The core warriors rose to their feet, raising their glasses to me.I didn't feel a shred of vanity. Just a profound, solid sense of self.It was late when the victory celebration ended.I threw on my coat and walked out o

Caleb's POVI didn't go after her.Rowan's figure disappearing into the blizzard was like the end of an old, faded movie.I went back inside and locked the door.I opened my laptop and went back to work. The phantom ache from the broken Mate Bond was still there, a ghost in my nerves. But true healing isn't about the pain stopping. It's about feeling the pain and still making the right choice. The next day, I moved into a high-level isolation sector, deeper in the core territory.Security was tight. It was the first strategy I spearheaded. At the head of the conference table, I spread out the map. "Their defenses look strong," I said, my voice low. "But they have three fatal flaws. We cut off their supply lines here, here, and here. The balance of power at the nego

Caleb's POVThe plane landed in Blackpeak Territory at dawn. My phone was vibrating off the hook.Sixty-three missed calls. Over a hundred texts. All from Rowan.I stared at the screen for three seconds. Then went to my settings.Block.My finger tapped the button without a single shred of doubt.A huge man stood at the bottom of the jet stairs. Dark coat, eyes sharp as knives."Caleb." He held out a hand. His voice was a low rumble. "I'm Marcus."I shook his hand. As I started to speak, I saw a flicker of shock in his eyes.He let go, taking half a step back. His nostrils flared."That scent you had… the calm, Beta scent…" Marcus’s voice was tight. "It's gone. Replaced by something else. A possessive, Alpha scent. It's nothing like I remember."It was only then I realized. The Alpha presence I had forced down for twenty years was now pouring out of me, unchecked.Pure. Wild. A cold, territorial dominance. The kind of consuming power that only a top-tier Alpha possesses.Marcus grinned

The moment the plane broke through the clouds, the cabin shook. A jolt of turbulence as we crossed the pack border.I didn’t grab the armrest like I used to.I opened my bag. Pulled out my tablet. Opened the note I kept locked behind three passwords. The last page was a list. Dates and descriptions. Every single time Rowan had broken her promise to me in the last three months.1. March 2nd. Forgot to pick me up from work.2. March 9th. Forgot our dinner date....17. Last night. Forgot our Bonding Anniversary.I used to think keeping a list like this was pathetic. Love isn’t a business. You don’t keep a ledger.I was wrong. If I didn’t write it down, her easy “I forgot” would smooth everything over. My hurt would be dismissed. My sacrifices, ignored.Staring at the cold, hard facts on the screen was the only thing stopping me from caving. It was the only thing that forced me to see the truth.I closed the tablet.“Enough,” I whispered. As the plane pulled away from Silvermoon Ridge, a
