Chapter 2

Author: Tcee Eke
I should have felt relieved. Maybe even laughed.

Instead, tears slipped down my cheeks before I could stop them.

I booked a flight to Switzerland for two days later.

It was the place Dominic and I had promised to visit on our honeymoon ten years ago.

Back then, we had neither the money nor the time. To support his dream of building a business, we lived in a damp basement apartment, sometimes sharing leftover pizza for dinner.

Eventually, his business took off. We built a life from nothing, bought a beautiful house, and finally had enough money to travel anywhere we wanted.

Yet somehow, Switzerland never happened.

When the payment confirmation appeared on my phone, I stared at it for a long moment.

It felt like waking up from a ten-year dream and realizing I had spent most of it waiting for something that would never come.

I started packing. By the time I finished, my belongings filled five cardboard boxes, from clothes and books to the little things I’d collected throughout our marriage.

The doorbell rang.

Dominic’s mother stood outside with several bags in her hands.

“Sweetheart, I’ve made you a chicken pot pie and brought those chocolate chip cookies you love. You need to eat properly, especially during your pregnancy.”

She stepped inside, then stopped when she saw my face.

“Scarlett, why are you so pale? Has the morning sickness gotten worse? Are you feeling any better?”

“Mom, I…”

The truth nearly escaped me, but I swallowed it back.

She had high blood pressure. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her that I’d lost her grandchild and might not live long enough to see another spring.

Last month, she’d found me alone at a prenatal appointment. When she realized Dominic hadn’t come, she’d been so furious that her hands trembled.

She’d always reminded her son that my parents had died when I was young, and that I deserved to be loved and protected. If he ever mistreated me, she’d promised, she’d be the first to hold him accountable.

She had been a wonderful mother-in-law.

When Dominic abandoned my birthday dinner, she had stayed with me and relit the candles so I could make a wish.

When he forgot to ask how I was feeling, she called to check on me.

She had given me the warmth of a mother when I had no one else to turn to.

Perhaps that was why Dominic had always assumed I would stay. He knew how much I cherished his mother’s love, and maybe he believed I could never bring myself to leave her son.

“Why are there boxes everywhere?” she asked. “Are you moving?”

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

Dominic walked in, glanced at the boxes, then looked at his mother.

“Mom, the pregnancy has been hard on Scarlett. I suggested she take a little trip to relax and clear her head.”

He gave me a pointed look.

I lowered my eyes and played along.

His mother seemed satisfied. She reached into one of the shopping bags and pulled out a large white box tied with a silver ribbon.

“I bought this for the baby,” she said, placing it in my hands. “It’s from Dior’s baby collection. I know it’s a little extravagant, but my first grandchild deserves the best.”

Inside lay a set of designer baby clothes, soft blankets, and tiny accessories, each piece carefully wrapped in tissue paper.

I ran my fingers over the delicate fabric, my throat tightening.

She had spent so much money preparing to welcome a child who would never arrive.

“Mom, it’s beautiful,” I whispered.

She smiled, completely unaware that her grandchild was already gone.

I lowered my eyes, holding the box against my chest as tears threatened to spill.

She was already dreaming of holding her grandchild and I didn’t have the heart to tell her there would be no baby.

Her gaze drifted toward the hospital folder on the table.

“Are these your prenatal reports? Let me have a look.”

My heart lurched.

Inside were my checkup records, the paperwork from the procedure three days ago, and my leukemia diagnosis.

Before she could reach for them, Dominic snatched up the folder and slipped it into his briefcase.

“The doctor said everything was fine,” he assured her. “You should be taking care of your own health instead of worrying about ours.”

Then he checked his watch.

“Didn’t you say you and Aunt Linda were leaving for Europe tomorrow? It’s getting late. I’ll drive you home.”

He ushered his mother out before she could ask another question.

An hour later, he returned.

His eyes landed on the cardboard boxes, and his expression soured.

“You’re really committed to this little act, aren’t you?” he said. “I’m curious how long you intend to keep pretending.”

I didn’t answer.

My phone lit up on the table. A notification confirmed that my flight ticket had been issued.

Dominic glanced at the screen. His expression shifted as he read the destination.

He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.

“Are you really going to Switzerland?”

Scarlett’s POVOne Year LaterThe first time my specialist told me my latest results showed significant improvement, I cried. Not because I believed I was invincible. Not because I thought my illness had become a distant memory.I cried because, for the first time since my diagnosis, I could imagine having a future. My treatment was working better than we’d hoped. The doctors continued monitoring my condition, adjusting my care when necessary, and reminding me that recovery would take time. Some days were still difficult. But I was stronger.I could walk beside the lake without stopping every few minutes. I could eat breakfast on the terrace, tend to the flowers outside my window, and sleep through the night without waking in pain. Most importantly, I had begun making plans that extended beyond the next hospital appointment.Adrian was there through it all.Our relationship hadn’t begun with grand declarations or promises to save each other. It had grown through quiet mornings, long co

Every single one was from Dominic. His messages flooded my screen.[Scarlett, where are you?][Please answer me.][I’m sorry. Baby, please.]Once, those words would have been enough to make me forgive him.Not anymore.I sent him one final message.[We’re divorced, Dominic. You have your life, and I have mine. Please don’t contact me again.]Then I blocked him everywhere.Ten years ago, Dominic and I had planned our honeymoon in Switzerland. We’d promised to walk beside the lake, watch the mountains at sunrise, and spend a week with nothing but each other. We’d never made it.Now, I stood outside a quiet guesthouse overlooking Lake Lucerne, finally visiting the place I’d dreamed about for so long.Only this time, I was alone. And I intended to stay that way.The guesthouse owner, Adrian Cole, helped carry my suitcase upstairs. Dominic’s POVFor the first time, my voice turned cold when I spoke to Elena.“Did you know Scarlett was dying?”Elena shook her head quickly. “How could I have known? I—”“You took the hospital folder from my briefcase.” I cut her off. “Where is it?”She hesitated before answering. “I left it at the old apartment.”I didn’t wait for her to say another word.I drove straight to the apartment we’d owned before moving into our current house. On the way in, I ran into our former neighbor.“Dominic? How’s Scarlett doing?” she asked. “The day the ambulance came, I saw so much blood on the front step. It frightened me terribly. Is she recovering?”I forced a strained smile. “She’s fine.”The lie nearly choked me.I unlocked the door.A dark, dried stain spread across the doormat.Scarlett’s blood. My knees almost gave way. This was where she’d collapsed. Where she’d begged me not to leave her and I’d accused her of faking her pain to compete with Elena for my attention.I hadn’t even looked

Dominic’s POV“How can such a handsome man be so rude?!”The two nurses exchanged bewildered looks as I rushed away.“Isn’t he the husband of the woman in the private room? Why was he asking about Scarlett?”“Who knows? He looked like he’d seen a ghost.”I barely heard them.As I reached the hospital entrance, Elena hurried toward me, looking frantic.“Dominic! Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”“Move.”I brushed past her without looking back.“Dominic? Where are you going?”I rushed into the adjacent room and pulled back the privacy curtain. The bed was empty.A doctor entered to check on the patient in the next bed. I immediately grabbed his arm.“Where is Scarlett Whitmore? Which room is she in?”The doctor frowned at my sudden intrusion.“What’s your relationship with her?”“I’m her husband.”He stared at me in disbelief before answering.“Mrs. Whitmore was discharged two hours ago.”I let go of his arm.Discharged? She’d been seriously ill, and she’d left

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 6

Dominic’s POVWhile signing Elena’s discharge papers, I caught sight of another discharge report on the nurses’ station counter. Then I saw the name on it.Scarlett Whitmore.“Scarlett…?”I stared at the document, wondering if it could really be her.Scarlett? There had to be another woman with the same name. But the more I looked at the signature, the more familiar it became.I knew that handwriting.Scarlett’s writing had always been delicate. She had a habit of curving the final strokes of her letters upward, insisting that even her signature had to look elegant.I suddenly remembered the first time she’d written her name in my college notebook.I teased her, asking, “Who writes their name like that?”She’d made a face at me before scribbling her name again.“Because I’m a princess, obviously! This is the signature of Princess Scarlett herself.”Then she pushed the notebook back into my hands.“Here. Whenever I’m not around, you can look at my name whenever you miss me.”Remembering

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything. The woman who had spent three years coming between Dominic and me was carrying his child. And I had just lost mine.I stared at her, unable to breathe. Then she leaned closer.“Besides, you’re dying anyway. You won’t be around much longer. Why shouldn’t I have the family you can no longer give him?”My heart clenched.I tore my wrist from her grip and snatched the locket from her neck.“Give that back!”The pain in my abdomen sharpened. Elena stumbled backward.Dominic crossed the room in seconds and caught her.“Scarlett! What the hell are you doing?”I staggered away from them, my lower back crashing into the corner of a cabinet.Pain shot through my back and abdomen. I curled onto the floor, unable to straighten up.Dominic didn’t even look at me.He lifted Elena into his arms, his face full of concern.“Don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”Elena’s eyes reddened. She shook her head weakly against his chest.“Dominic, please don’t
