Chapter 1

Dominic’s expression darkened as he stared at the divorce papers. He made no move to take the pen I offered.

“Scarlett, when did you become this unreasonable? You ended our pregnancy without discussing it with me, and now you expect me to sign away our marriage?”

I looked at him, wondering how a man who had known me for ten years could misunderstand me so completely.

“I waited for you, Dominic.”

“And I told you Elena was in trouble!”

In truth, whether we divorced or not hardly mattered anymore.

After all, I had acute leukemia. My doctors had explained that the disease was aggressive and that I needed treatment as soon as possible. Continuing the pregnancy would have complicated my treatment.

They had also warned me that, given the severity of my disease, I might have less than three months left.

I had already lost our baby. I didn't know how much time I had left, and I no longer wanted to spend it tangled in the endless, exhausting drama between Dominic and Elena.

For three years, Elena Blake’s depression had dictated our marriage.

I remembered my birthday dinner, the private room he’d booked weeks in advance. I’d barely leaned forward to blow out my candles when Elena called, crying so hard she could barely speak. Dominic left before I made my wish.

On our anniversary, he’d bought me white roses. But when Elena saw a photograph of her ex-husband giving his new girlfriend the same flowers, she broke down. Dominic threw my bouquet into the trash and rushed to comfort her.

Even our baby's first appointments had been sacrificed. Three times, I’d sat alone in the examination room while Dominic tended to Elena’s latest crisis.

I’d convinced myself that marriage meant making sacrifices for the people you loved.

I just hadn’t realized I was the only one sacrificing anything.

“I’m not changing my mind.” I pushed the pen closer to him. “Keep the house and the car. I want sixty percent of our savings.”

He studied me for a moment before his irritation gave way to concern. Then he sat beside me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders.

“Scarlett, sweetheart, let's not make a permanent decision over a terrible week.”

I didn't lean into him.

“I'll make things right,” he continued. “I'll answer your calls. You can have my location turned on permanently if that's what you need. No more missed calls, no more wondering where I am.”

“We can try for another baby,” he said, kissing my forehead. “Once things settle down, we'll have the family we've always wanted.”

I closed my eyes.

He spoke as though our lost child were a plan that had merely been postponed.

For years, he'd promised me a better tomorrow.

He'd missed Valentine's Day because Elena had a panic attack. Our anniversary trip had been cancelled when she said she couldn't cope alone. The honeymoon we'd planned since our struggling days had never happened because, according to Dominic, Elena still needed his support.

Every time, he'd ask me to be patient.

Every time, I'd believed him.

“You've stood by me for ten years,” he murmured. “Can't you stand by me a little longer? Elena's therapist says she's making progress.”

I pulled away from him.

“Dominic, I don't have another three years to give you.”

He frowned, apparently hearing only an accusation.

“Why are you talking as if I'm asking you to wait forever? Elena is getting better. She won't need me like this forever.”

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

Elena's name flashed across the screen.

He picked up immediately.

“Dominic!” she cried. “I slipped on the stairs. My ankle hurts so badly, and I can't get up!”

He was on his feet before she'd finished speaking.

“Don't move. I'm coming.”

He ended the call and reached for his keys.

I watched him cross the living room. Not once did he look back at me, ask how I was feeling after the miscarriage, or offer to bring me something warm to ease the pain.

“Dominic.”

He paused at the door.

“Sign the papers.”

His shoulders tensed. He returned, snatched the pen from my hand, and signed the last page without reading it.

“There. Happy now?”

He dropped the pen onto the table.

“One day, Scarlett, you'll realize what you've thrown away. Don't expect me to take you back when you come begging.”

Then he walked out.

The door slammed behind him.

Scarlett’s POVOne Year LaterThe first time my specialist told me my latest results showed significant improvement, I cried. Not because I believed I was invincible. Not because I thought my illness had become a distant memory.I cried because, for the first time since my diagnosis, I could imagine having a future. My treatment was working better than we’d hoped. The doctors continued monitoring my condition, adjusting my care when necessary, and reminding me that recovery would take time. Some days were still difficult. But I was stronger.I could walk beside the lake without stopping every few minutes. I could eat breakfast on the terrace, tend to the flowers outside my window, and sleep through the night without waking in pain. Most importantly, I had begun making plans that extended beyond the next hospital appointment.Adrian was there through it all.Our relationship hadn’t begun with grand declarations or promises to save each other. It had grown through quiet mornings, long co

Scarlett’s POVThe moment my plane landed in Switzerland, I switched off airplane mode.My phone vibrated relentlessly. One hundred and twenty missed calls. Every single one was from Dominic. His messages flooded my screen.[Scarlett, where are you?][Please answer me.][I’m sorry. Baby, please.]Once, those words would have been enough to make me forgive him.Not anymore.I sent him one final message.[We’re divorced, Dominic. You have your life, and I have mine. Please don’t contact me again.]Then I blocked him everywhere.Ten years ago, Dominic and I had planned our honeymoon in Switzerland. We’d promised to walk beside the lake, watch the mountains at sunrise, and spend a week with nothing but each other. We’d never made it.Now, I stood outside a quiet guesthouse overlooking Lake Lucerne, finally visiting the place I’d dreamed about for so long.Only this time, I was alone. And I intended to stay that way.The guesthouse owner, Adrian Cole, helped carry my suitcase upstairs. He n

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 8

Dominic’s POVFor the first time, my voice turned cold when I spoke to Elena.“Did you know Scarlett was dying?”Elena shook her head quickly. “How could I have known? I—”“You took the hospital folder from my briefcase.” I cut her off. “Where is it?”She hesitated before answering. “I left it at the old apartment.”I didn’t wait for her to say another word.I drove straight to the apartment we’d owned before moving into our current house. On the way in, I ran into our former neighbor.“Dominic? How’s Scarlett doing?” she asked. “The day the ambulance came, I saw so much blood on the front step. It frightened me terribly. Is she recovering?”I forced a strained smile. “She’s fine.”The lie nearly choked me.I unlocked the door.A dark, dried stain spread across the doormat.Scarlett’s blood. My knees almost gave way. This was where she’d collapsed. Where she’d begged me not to leave her and I’d accused her of faking her pain to compete with Elena for my attention.I hadn’t even looked

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 7

Dominic’s POV“How can such a handsome man be so rude?!”The two nurses exchanged bewildered looks as I rushed away.“Isn’t he the husband of the woman in the private room? Why was he asking about Scarlett?”“Who knows? He looked like he’d seen a ghost.”I barely heard them.As I reached the hospital entrance, Elena hurried toward me, looking frantic.“Dominic! Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”“Move.”I brushed past her without looking back.“Dominic? Where are you going?”I rushed into the adjacent room and pulled back the privacy curtain. The bed was empty.A doctor entered to check on the patient in the next bed. I immediately grabbed his arm.“Where is Scarlett Whitmore? Which room is she in?”The doctor frowned at my sudden intrusion.“What’s your relationship with her?”“I’m her husband.”He stared at me in disbelief before answering.“Mrs. Whitmore was discharged two hours ago.”I let go of his arm.Discharged? She’d been seriously ill, and she’d left

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 6

Dominic’s POVWhile signing Elena’s discharge papers, I caught sight of another discharge report on the nurses’ station counter. Then I saw the name on it.Scarlett Whitmore.“Scarlett…?”I stared at the document, wondering if it could really be her.Scarlett? There had to be another woman with the same name. But the more I looked at the signature, the more familiar it became.I knew that handwriting.Scarlett’s writing had always been delicate. She had a habit of curving the final strokes of her letters upward, insisting that even her signature had to look elegant.I suddenly remembered the first time she’d written her name in my college notebook.I teased her, asking, “Who writes their name like that?”She’d made a face at me before scribbling her name again.“Because I’m a princess, obviously! This is the signature of Princess Scarlett herself.”Then she pushed the notebook back into my hands.“Here. Whenever I’m not around, you can look at my name whenever you miss me.”Remembering

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything. The woman who had spent three years coming between Dominic and me was carrying his child. And I had just lost mine.I stared at her, unable to breathe. Then she leaned closer.“Besides, you’re dying anyway. You won’t be around much longer. Why shouldn’t I have the family you can no longer give him?”My heart clenched.I tore my wrist from her grip and snatched the locket from her neck.“Give that back!”The pain in my abdomen sharpened. Elena stumbled backward.Dominic crossed the room in seconds and caught her.“Scarlett! What the hell are you doing?”I staggered away from them, my lower back crashing into the corner of a cabinet.Pain shot through my back and abdomen. I curled onto the floor, unable to straighten up.Dominic didn’t even look at me.He lifted Elena into his arms, his face full of concern.“Don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”Elena’s eyes reddened. She shook her head weakly against his chest.“Dominic, please don’t
