Chapter 5

Author: Tcee Eke
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

The woman who had spent three years coming between Dominic and me was carrying his child.

And I had just lost mine.

I stared at her, unable to breathe.

Then she leaned closer.

“Besides, you’re dying anyway. You won’t be around much longer. Why shouldn’t I have the family you can no longer give him?”

My heart clenched.

I tore my wrist from her grip and snatched the locket from her neck.

“Give that back!”

The pain in my abdomen sharpened. Elena stumbled backward.

Dominic crossed the room in seconds and caught her.

“Scarlett! What the hell are you doing?”

I staggered away from them, my lower back crashing into the corner of a cabinet.

Pain shot through my back and abdomen. I curled onto the floor, unable to straighten up.

Dominic didn’t even look at me.

He lifted Elena into his arms, his face full of concern.

“Don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

Elena’s eyes reddened. She shook her head weakly against his chest.

“Dominic, please don’t blame Scarlett. She must have lost control because she loves you so much. She didn’t mean to hurt me.”

He looked down at me, disgust flashing across his face.

“Scarlett, when did you become so cruel? You’re attacking someone over a stupid necklace?”

“Elena’s treatment is at a critical stage. She can’t handle any emotional stress right now.”

He adjusted his hold on her.

“I gave her that locket because she’s been having nightmares. I wanted her to feel safe. If you’re upset, take it up with me instead of hurting her.”

I lay on the floor, clutching my abdomen. Cold sweat soaked through my clothes, and every breath sent another wave of pain through me.

“Please. My medication is in my bag. I need—”

“Stop it, Scarlett!”

His voice cracked through the room.

“You were perfectly fine a moment ago. Now Elena is unwell, and suddenly you’re having an emergency too?”

I stared at him, stunned.

Cold sweat gathered at the back of my neck. The pain was growing sharper, spreading through my abdomen and into my back.

“I’m not pretending,” I whispered. “Something is wrong.”

Elena clutched his shirt.

“Dom, please. I’m scared.”

His attention returned to her instantly.

“It’s okay. I’ve got you.”

He lifted her into his arms and headed for the door.

Before leaving, he looked back at me.

“You can’t keep using your health to make me choose between you. I’m not going to be manipulated like this.”

The front door shut behind them.

I slid down the wall, trembling.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t even reach for my phone. Then another wave of pain doubled me over, and I tasted blood in my mouth.

I fumbled for my phone and called emergency services.

By the time the paramedics arrived, I could barely speak.

At the hospital, the doctors ran blood tests and monitored my condition. When the attending physician returned, his expression was grave.

“Your leukemia is progressing more quickly than we’d hoped. The symptoms you’re experiencing are concerning, and pain medication alone won’t address the underlying disease.”

He explained that I needed urgent specialist care and that chemotherapy might help, though there was no guarantee of success.

“Is there anyone we can contact for you?” he asked. “Someone who can stay with you while we discuss your options?”

I glanced at the empty chair beside my bed.

“No.”

He hesitated.

“Scarlett, given the severity of your condition, I want you to understand the risks of leaving without further treatment. We need to prepare for the possibility that you may deteriorate rapidly.”

I nodded.

I already knew I might have less than three months.

After signing the paperwork to decline admission, I arranged for my belongings to be shipped to Switzerland. The following morning, I checked out and went straight to the airport.

I boarded my flight with one suitcase and no one to say goodbye to.

When the plane landed in Switzerland, I switched off airplane mode.

My phone immediately began vibrating in my hand.

Missed calls flooded the screen.

And every single one was from Dominic.

Scarlett’s POVOne Year LaterThe first time my specialist told me my latest results showed significant improvement, I cried. Not because I believed I was invincible. Not because I thought my illness had become a distant memory.I cried because, for the first time since my diagnosis, I could imagine having a future. My treatment was working better than we’d hoped. The doctors continued monitoring my condition, adjusting my care when necessary, and reminding me that recovery would take time. Some days were still difficult. But I was stronger.I could walk beside the lake without stopping every few minutes. I could eat breakfast on the terrace, tend to the flowers outside my window, and sleep through the night without waking in pain. Most importantly, I had begun making plans that extended beyond the next hospital appointment.Adrian was there through it all.Our relationship hadn’t begun with grand declarations or promises to save each other. It had grown through quiet mornings, long co

Scarlett’s POVThe moment my plane landed in Switzerland, I switched off airplane mode.My phone vibrated relentlessly. One hundred and twenty missed calls. Every single one was from Dominic. His messages flooded my screen.[Scarlett, where are you?][Please answer me.][I’m sorry. Baby, please.]Once, those words would have been enough to make me forgive him.Not anymore.I sent him one final message.[We’re divorced, Dominic. You have your life, and I have mine. Please don’t contact me again.]Then I blocked him everywhere.Ten years ago, Dominic and I had planned our honeymoon in Switzerland. We’d promised to walk beside the lake, watch the mountains at sunrise, and spend a week with nothing but each other. We’d never made it.Now, I stood outside a quiet guesthouse overlooking Lake Lucerne, finally visiting the place I’d dreamed about for so long.Only this time, I was alone. And I intended to stay that way.The guesthouse owner, Adrian Cole, helped carry my suitcase upstairs. Dominic’s POVFor the first time, my voice turned cold when I spoke to Elena.“Did you know Scarlett was dying?”Elena shook her head quickly. “How could I have known? I—”“You took the hospital folder from my briefcase.” I cut her off. “Where is it?”She hesitated before answering. “I left it at the old apartment.”I didn’t wait for her to say another word.I drove straight to the apartment we’d owned before moving into our current house. On the way in, I ran into our former neighbor.“Dominic? How’s Scarlett doing?” she asked. “The day the ambulance came, I saw so much blood on the front step. It frightened me terribly. Is she recovering?”I forced a strained smile. “She’s fine.”The lie nearly choked me.I unlocked the door.A dark, dried stain spread across the doormat.Scarlett’s blood. My knees almost gave way. This was where she’d collapsed. Where she’d begged me not to leave her and I’d accused her of faking her pain to compete with Elena for my attention.I hadn’t even looked

Dominic’s POV“How can such a handsome man be so rude?!”The two nurses exchanged bewildered looks as I rushed away.“Isn’t he the husband of the woman in the private room? Why was he asking about Scarlett?”“Who knows? He looked like he’d seen a ghost.”I barely heard them.As I reached the hospital entrance, Elena hurried toward me, looking frantic.“Dominic! Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”“Move.”I brushed past her without looking back.“Dominic? Where are you going?”I rushed into the adjacent room and pulled back the privacy curtain. The bed was empty.A doctor entered to check on the patient in the next bed. I immediately grabbed his arm.“Where is Scarlett Whitmore? Which room is she in?”The doctor frowned at my sudden intrusion.“What’s your relationship with her?”“I’m her husband.”He stared at me in disbelief before answering.“Mrs. Whitmore was discharged two hours ago.”I let go of his arm.Discharged? She’d been seriously ill, and she’d left

Dominic’s POVWhile signing Elena’s discharge papers, I caught sight of another discharge report on the nurses’ station counter. Then I saw the name on it.Scarlett Whitmore.“Scarlett…?”I stared at the document, wondering if it could really be her.Scarlett? There had to be another woman with the same name. But the more I looked at the signature, the more familiar it became.I knew that handwriting.Scarlett’s writing had always been delicate. She had a habit of curving the final strokes of her letters upward, insisting that even her signature had to look elegant.I suddenly remembered the first time she’d written her name in my college notebook.I teased her, asking, “Who writes their name like that?”She’d made a face at me before scribbling her name again.“Because I’m a princess, obviously! This is the signature of Princess Scarlett herself.”Then she pushed the notebook back into my hands.“Here. Whenever I’m not around, you can look at my name whenever you miss me.”Remembering
