Chapter 4

Author: Tcee Eke
The little breakfast nook Dominic and I had furnished together had been transformed into a sleek bar area.

On the counter sat two champagne flutes and an open bottle of Dom Pérignon. Beside them was a plate of strawberries dipped in chocolate.

I hated strawberries.

Dominic knew that. He’d never bought them for me in ten years.

Laughter drifted from the kitchen.

“Dom, you promised to make me your famous truffle pasta. You’re not going to burn it again, are you?”

“Relax, Elena. You know I can never say no to you.”

I followed the voices and stopped at the kitchen entrance.

Dominic stood behind Elena, his arms loosely wrapped around her waist as he helped her stir a pot on the stove. She leaned back against his chest, laughing.

I looked at them and let out a faint laugh.

“Dominic, is this what you meant when you kept insisting there was nothing going on between you two?”

They sprang apart immediately and he reached for me.

“Scarlett, please don’t misunderstand. There was a plumbing problem at Elena’s apartment yesterday, so I brought her here temporarily. I just haven’t had a chance to tell you.”

I glanced around the kitchen.

Two wine glasses sat beside the sink. A handbag I’d never seen before rested on one of the dining chairs. On the counter lay a pharmacy receipt with Elena’s name on it, dated two weeks earlier.

I looked toward the hallway. Her coat hung beside Dominic’s. A pair of expensive heels stood beneath the console table, and a framed photograph of them at a charity gala had been placed on the mantel.

They weren’t things someone had brought over yesterday.

“Two weeks?” I asked quietly.

Dominic followed my gaze. His jaw tightened.

“She’s been staying here occasionally. I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d react like this.”

I let out a humorless laugh.

“Your lies are embarrassing, Dominic.”

“Scarlett, please. Don’t start.”

He rubbed his forehead, already sounding exhausted by me.

“Once Elena gets back on her feet, things will return to normal. Can’t you give me a little time?”

I looked at the kitchen island.

It was where Dominic and I had once sat on the floor eating takeout because we couldn’t afford a dining table. Back then, he’d promised that when his business succeeded, we’d buy a house with a kitchen big enough for us to cook together every night.

We’d finally gotten that kitchen. He’d just found someone else to share it with.

“Do you remember our first Thanksgiving here?” I asked.

He frowned. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“We couldn’t afford a proper dinner, so we bought a cheap frozen turkey and spent the whole evening arguing over the oven temperature. You said we’d laugh about it when we were rich.”

His expression hardened. “Are we really doing this now? You’re upset because I’m helping a friend?”

“No.” I met his eyes. “I’m finally understanding that you can remember every promise you make to Elena, but you forget every promise you make to me.”

I turned toward the living room.

A sharp ache spread through my abdomen, but I forced myself to keep walking.

“Scarlett, wait.”

Elena hurried after me and caught my arm.

“Please don’t leave because of me. I’ll go if that’s what you want.”

As she spoke, she toyed with the necklace around her neck.

A small gold locket hung from the chain.

I recognized it instantly. I’d bought it as a blessing for my unborn child, hoping it would bring the baby good health and protection.

My fingers went cold.

Elena’s nails dug into my wrist as she leaned closer.

“You didn’t know?” she whispered. “Dominic gave it to me to protect our baby.”

“Your baby?”

Elena’s hand moved to her stomach, and a small smile touched her lips.

“I’m pregnant, Scarlett.”

Scarlett’s POVOne Year LaterThe first time my specialist told me my latest results showed significant improvement, I cried. Not because I believed I was invincible. Not because I thought my illness had become a distant memory.I cried because, for the first time since my diagnosis, I could imagine having a future. My treatment was working better than we’d hoped. The doctors continued monitoring my condition, adjusting my care when necessary, and reminding me that recovery would take time. Some days were still difficult. But I was stronger.I could walk beside the lake without stopping every few minutes. I could eat breakfast on the terrace, tend to the flowers outside my window, and sleep through the night without waking in pain. Most importantly, I had begun making plans that extended beyond the next hospital appointment.Adrian was there through it all.Our relationship hadn’t begun with grand declarations or promises to save each other. It had grown through quiet mornings, long co

Scarlett’s POVThe moment my plane landed in Switzerland, I switched off airplane mode.My phone vibrated relentlessly. One hundred and twenty missed calls. Every single one was from Dominic. His messages flooded my screen.[Scarlett, where are you?][Please answer me.][I’m sorry. Baby, please.]Once, those words would have been enough to make me forgive him.Not anymore.I sent him one final message.[We’re divorced, Dominic. You have your life, and I have mine. Please don’t contact me again.]Then I blocked him everywhere.Ten years ago, Dominic and I had planned our honeymoon in Switzerland. We’d promised to walk beside the lake, watch the mountains at sunrise, and spend a week with nothing but each other. We’d never made it.Now, I stood outside a quiet guesthouse overlooking Lake Lucerne, finally visiting the place I’d dreamed about for so long.Only this time, I was alone. And I intended to stay that way.The guesthouse owner, Adrian Cole, helped carry my suitcase upstairs. He n

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 8

Dominic’s POVFor the first time, my voice turned cold when I spoke to Elena.“Did you know Scarlett was dying?”Elena shook her head quickly. “How could I have known? I—”“You took the hospital folder from my briefcase.” I cut her off. “Where is it?”She hesitated before answering. “I left it at the old apartment.”I didn’t wait for her to say another word.I drove straight to the apartment we’d owned before moving into our current house. On the way in, I ran into our former neighbor.“Dominic? How’s Scarlett doing?” she asked. “The day the ambulance came, I saw so much blood on the front step. It frightened me terribly. Is she recovering?”I forced a strained smile. “She’s fine.”The lie nearly choked me.I unlocked the door.A dark, dried stain spread across the doormat.Scarlett’s blood. My knees almost gave way. This was where she’d collapsed. Where she’d begged me not to leave her and I’d accused her of faking her pain to compete with Elena for my attention.I hadn’t even looked

Dominic’s POV“How can such a handsome man be so rude?!”The two nurses exchanged bewildered looks as I rushed away.“Isn’t he the husband of the woman in the private room? Why was he asking about Scarlett?”“Who knows? He looked like he’d seen a ghost.”I barely heard them.As I reached the hospital entrance, Elena hurried toward me, looking frantic.“Dominic! Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”“Move.”I brushed past her without looking back.“Dominic? Where are you going?”I rushed into the adjacent room and pulled back the privacy curtain. The bed was empty.A doctor entered to check on the patient in the next bed. I immediately grabbed his arm.“Where is Scarlett Whitmore? Which room is she in?”The doctor frowned at my sudden intrusion.“What’s your relationship with her?”“I’m her husband.”He stared at me in disbelief before answering.“Mrs. Whitmore was discharged two hours ago.”I let go of his arm.Discharged? She’d been seriously ill, and she’d left

  • You Lost Me Before I Died   Chapter 6

Dominic’s POVWhile signing Elena’s discharge papers, I caught sight of another discharge report on the nurses’ station counter. Then I saw the name on it.Scarlett Whitmore.“Scarlett…?”I stared at the document, wondering if it could really be her.Scarlett? There had to be another woman with the same name. But the more I looked at the signature, the more familiar it became.I knew that handwriting.Scarlett’s writing had always been delicate. She had a habit of curving the final strokes of her letters upward, insisting that even her signature had to look elegant.I suddenly remembered the first time she’d written her name in my college notebook.I teased her, asking, “Who writes their name like that?”She’d made a face at me before scribbling her name again.“Because I’m a princess, obviously! This is the signature of Princess Scarlett herself.”Then she pushed the notebook back into my hands.“Here. Whenever I’m not around, you can look at my name whenever you miss me.”Remembering

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything. The woman who had spent three years coming between Dominic and me was carrying his child. And I had just lost mine.I stared at her, unable to breathe. Then she leaned closer.“Besides, you’re dying anyway. You won’t be around much longer. Why shouldn’t I have the family you can no longer give him?”My heart clenched.I tore my wrist from her grip and snatched the locket from her neck.“Give that back!”The pain in my abdomen sharpened. Elena stumbled backward.Dominic crossed the room in seconds and caught her.“Scarlett! What the hell are you doing?”I staggered away from them, my lower back crashing into the corner of a cabinet.Pain shot through my back and abdomen. I curled onto the floor, unable to straighten up.Dominic didn’t even look at me.He lifted Elena into his arms, his face full of concern.“Don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”Elena’s eyes reddened. She shook her head weakly against his chest.“Dominic, please don’t
