Chapter 1

作者: Lucky Deer
Ethan Blake came out of the bathroom while I was still sitting there, staring blankly at my phone.

His gaze flicked over me.

“What are you looking at?”

I snapped back to reality and instinctively turned my phone facedown on the table.

“Nothing. Just scrolling.”

Ethan didn’t ask again.

Then again, he probably didn’t care.

He walked over to the mirror and changed into his pajamas at an unhurried pace.

He didn’t spare me another glance.

He’d been like this for all three years of our marriage.

Calm.

Reserved.

Distant.

Like an iceberg I could never melt, no matter how hard I tried.

I stared at his back, then found myself looking at my phone again.

Two minutes earlier, a message had come through on my alt account.

It was from Ethan.

'I talked to a lawyer today. The divorce papers should be ready next week.'

'Jess, just wait a little longer for me.'

'Soon, I’ll finally be able to come see you openly.'

'Then we can really be together.'

'We can finally put these three years of waiting behind us.'

Every word carried a tenderness and urgency I had never once seen from him in real life.

I bit down hard on my lower lip to keep myself from making a sound.

Ethan and I had entered into an arranged marriage between our families.

I hadn’t expected anything from a marriage neither of us had chosen, especially one that had begun without love.

But the first time I saw Ethan, I fell for him.

On some inexplicable impulse, I had created an Instagram account under my artist name and followed him.

Not long after, he messaged that account after seeing one of my paintings.

I thought he knew it was me.

I thought he was only cold and quiet in person because that was simply his personality.

Because online, he was always patient with me.

Gentle.

Thoughtful.

No matter what I asked of him, he was there.

I thought it was our secret little game.

Something intimate that belonged only to the two of us.

Now I realized how ridiculous I had been.

He loved Jess.

He just didn’t love Joanna.

He didn’t even know that the woman he had considered his soulmate for the past three years was the same wife he found so boring that he could barely bring himself to speak to her, even though she slept beside him every night.

I didn’t sleep at all that night.

The next morning, I got up and made breakfast like I always did.

Ethan had a sensitive stomach and didn’t like eating takeout.

For the past three years, I had prepared almost every meal he ate.

He was also extremely particular about cleanliness and order.

Even at home, everything had to be arranged exactly the way he liked it.

By the time I carried out a bowl of plain oatmeal and a few simple side dishes, Ethan was already sitting at the table.

He looked at the bland breakfast in front of him and frowned.

“Why oatmeal?”

My hand paused over the bowl.

“You were drinking at that business dinner last night. I thought your stomach might be bothering you, so I made something light.”

Ethan didn’t respond.

He simply picked up his spoon with a cold expression.

Less than thirty seconds later, my phone lit up.

A new message had arrived on my alt account.

I picked up my glass of water and discreetly glanced at the screen.

'Morning, Jess.'

'Plain oatmeal again today. I’m already sick of it.'

'Honestly, I hate all this so-called healthy food.'

'When we’re finally together, can we go out for spicy buffalo wings whenever we want? Your favorite.'

A sharp pain went through my chest.

I loved spicy food.

The hotter, the better.

But Ethan couldn’t stand the smell of anything greasy or heavily spiced.

Not long after we got married, I once made a spicy dish at home.

The moment he smelled it, his expression turned cold.

He didn’t say a word.

He simply turned around, packed a bag, and stayed at a hotel for an entire week.

For those seven days, I barely slept because I was so worried about him.

After that, I learned my lesson.

Not another drop of chili oil or a single pepper ever appeared on our dinner table.

For Ethan, I had forced myself to change eating habits I’d had for more than twenty years.

I thought he was simply that particular with everyone.

Apparently, he just wasn’t willing to make an exception for me.

I set down my glass and looked at him quietly.

“Ethan.”

He lifted his head.

“What?”

“If you really don’t like oatmeal, I won’t make it anymore.”

Ethan paused.

He seemed surprised that I would say something like that.

A moment later, he gave a casual nod.

“Whatever.”

After I was discharged, I ended my exhibition earlier than planned. As it happened, a prestigious art school in France had recently offered me a place in a two-year program.I accepted without hesitation. The night before I was scheduled to leave, I had just stepped outside my apartment building when I saw a familiar black Maybach parked beneath a streetlight.Ethan was leaning against the door.Cigarette butts littered the pavement around his feet.I hadn’t seen him in more than two weeks, and he had lost so much weight he barely looked like himself. His once perfectly fitted shirt hung loosely from his frame, and dark stubble covered his jaw.The moment he saw me, he quickly crushed out the cigarette in his hand and walked toward me.“Joanna.”Before he could say anything else, I spoke.“I’m leaving the country tomorrow.”His body stiffened. Then a bitter smile tugged at his lips.“I know.”Of course he did.I hadn’t bothered hiding my plans. If Ethan truly wanted to

I thought I had made myself clear enough that Ethan would never come looking for me again.Apparently, I was wrong. Two weeks later, my solo exhibition opened at one of the city’s most prestigious art museums.I had spent an entire year preparing for it.On opening day, I had barely reached the entrance to the main gallery when I stopped dead.Lilies.They were everywhere.Dozens upon dozens of fragrant lilies filled the exhibition hall. And right in the center of it all stood Ethan. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored gray suit, surrounded by the museum director, investors, and several prominent guests. The moment he saw me, something almost triumphant flashed in his eyes.He walked straight toward me and held out a bouquet of lilies.“Congratulations on the exhibition.“I bought every painting you’re showing today.”His voice lowered so only I could hear.“At ten times the listed price.”Then he leaned slightly closer.“Didn’t you once tell me your dream was to ha

For the next month, Ethan didn’t show up again.I changed my phone number and filled my days with work until I barely had time to think about anything else. Then one afternoon, I ran into Ethan’s assistant at the coffee shop downstairs from my studio. He looked exhausted, with deep circles under his eyes. The moment he saw me, he hesitated before hurrying over.“Mrs. Blake, please. You have to go see Mr. Blake.”I stopped and calmly corrected him.“Ethan and I are divorced. Please call me Ms. Simpson.”“Mrs... Sorry, Ms. Simpson.”He gave me a strained smile.“Mr. Blake is in the hospital.”I stirred my coffee without even looking up.When he saw how little reaction that got from me, he hesitated for a long moment before continuing.“He had a severe gastrointestinal bleed.”My hand paused slightly.“Ever since the day he came to see you, he’s been going to restaurants alone. Every single time, he orders the spiciest dish they have.“You know how bad his stomach is. He u

I thought Ethan and I would never cross paths again. But less than two months later, a familiar Maybach pulled up and blocked my path. The rear door opened, and Ethan stepped out.A thick stack of papers was clenched in his hand. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me.I instinctively took a step back.“What are you doing here?”He didn’t answer.Instead, he strode toward me and hurled the papers against my chest.White sheets scattered across the sidewalk.I glanced down.It was a detailed digital forensics report tracing the alt account’s login history, along with records connecting the phone number to its registered owner. At the bottom of the last page, one name had been highlighted in bold red letters.Joanna Simpson. My breath caught. He knew. After our divorce, Jess had vanished without a trace.Ethan couldn’t understand why the woman who had promised to meet him once he was free had suddenly disappeared. So he had used every connection he had to track her

It was a photo.A custom-made anklet.A tiny, delicate bell hung from the chain, along with a small charm engraved with the letter J.'Jess, I know anklets are your favorite.''I had this one custom-made by an artisan in Italy and paid extra to have it rushed.''Today is my third wedding anniversary with her.''And it’ll be our last.''My lawyer has already finished drafting the divorce agreement.''Jess, I can’t take this anymore. Can we please meet?''I want to put the anklet on you myself.'I stared at the anklet he had chosen so carefully. Then I looked at the thoughtless necklace sitting in my drawer.I took a deep breath. And finally made up my mind.If he wanted to meet me that badly, then fine.We would meet.I picked up the phone and calmly typed one word.'Okay.'Ethan chose a discreet, upscale private restaurant for our meeting. It was one of the hardest places in the city to get into. You had to meet strict membership requirements, and reservations were

After breakfast, Ethan left for work.I stayed home to clean. When I passed his study, I stopped.Ethan’s study had always been completely off-limits to me.He wouldn’t even let me go inside to clean. If I so much as lingered near the door, he would get irritated.Once, I had gone in just to bring him a cup of coffee. The back of my hand accidentally brushed against one of his pens.He immediately lost his temper.“Joanna, can you stop touching my things? I can’t stand people who don’t respect boundaries.”After that, I never set foot in his study again.I stared at the closed door. Then something suddenly occurred to me.I pulled out the phone I used for my alt account and scrolled back through our messages. Two weeks ago, Ethan had sent Jess a photo of the study. In the picture, the room that was usually kept perfectly neat looked as though he had deliberately cleared out and rearranged part of it.There was a voice message underneath.'Jess, I cleared out half the st
