Chapter 10

Author: Sweetie Moore
After saying that, I turned my phone around and showed Adrian's social media posts to Christina.

She had once told him to block me, but who would have thought that not only had he ignored her request, but that he'd only gotten more brazen about it.

With just a quick glance, Christina's eyes darted away, clearly looking guilty. Gritting her teeth, she whispered to Adrian, "Didn't I tell you to block Jeremiah?"

"I'm sorry… I forgot."

"No wonder Jeremiah's so mad! Get out. Now!" she scolded him, putting on a show.

Then, she turned to me, her voice gentle, "Jeremiah, I know you've felt wronged these past few months. How about this? Come home with me, and we'll officially go public at work. I'll also give you a promotion and raise as compensation. Okay?"

I could tell that Christina was forcing herself to compromise. This version of her was already very different from the person she used to be. Unfortunately, I no longer cared about any of the conditions she was offering.

  • You Missed the Boat   Chapter 9

My boss, Gerald, suddenly messaged me, telling me to go into work as usual the next day. He was even giving me a promotion and a raise. It didn't take a genius to know that this had to be Christina's plan. Women really were impossible to figure out.As I was thinking it through, I noticed something else. Christina—who rarely, if ever, posted anything on social media—suddenly made a post about her being in the hospital, even clearly listing out the location and exact room number.I wasn't a narcissist, but under these circumstances, the message was clearly meant for me.I decided to go and make things clear with her. When I arrived at her hospital room, Christina was resting with her eyes closed. Her complexion was pale, and she looked unusually calm and serene. Before even opening her eyes, she said, "You're finally here, Jeremiah."I raised an eyebrow and sat on the chair beside her bed, crossing my legs. She opened her eyes and spoke as if nothing had happened. "I got a bit t

I drew a deep breath, then curled my lips into a faint, teasing smile."No," I said. "This is your breakup fee."Christina looked completely stunned, and her lips began to tremble.Behind her, Adrian yelled, "Chrissy, Jeremiah's just saying that out of spite! When I went to pick you up to head to the airport the other day, he already looked upset. He's obviously jealous!"Her eyes flashing with anger, Christina snapped back to her senses."How manipulative of you, Jeremiah!" she said sharply. "You're always pretending to be so righteous, but you don't show it when you're upset, and now you're pulling this crap on me? Fine, if you want to break up, then let's break up!"With that, she hurled the ring box to the ground. She looked absolutely furious, as if I were the villain in this story, stirring up trouble for no reason. In the past, if I had seen her throwing the ring, I would've been absolutely heartbroken. Not only would I meekly pick it up, but I'd also grovel and beg her f

  • You Missed the Boat   Chapter 7

"For our seventh anniversary, you said you'd take time off to go to the beach with me," I said calmly. "But in the end, you went to the amusement park with Adrian instead."On Valentine's Day, you'd said we'd have dinner together, but I waited until midnight, and you were still at the movie theatre with Adrian."On my birthday, you said you'd cook my favorite pasta. But Adrian ended up sick, and you went to take care of him instead."Christina, I assumed you were just kidding again this time. How could you possibly come looking for me? There's just no way."Even I was surprised by how calm I sounded. In the past, whenever I thought of these incidents, my eyes would involuntarily well up, and my nose would sting. But now, it was like I had removed all my feelings for Christina and was just recounting them as if I were an outsider. The line fell silent. All I could hear was her heavy breathing. After a long pause, she scoffed coldly."Are you seriously digging up old grievances

I was genuinely surprised. I pulled the phone away and checked the caller ID.It really was Christina."You resigned and moved all your things out of our place… Where exactly are you right now, Jeremiah?" she asked, her breathing a little unsteady. To my amazement, I actually caught a hint of panic in her voice. I couldn't even believe it."Fishing," I answered casually."Fishing?"She paused, clearly letting out a long breath before asking softly, "Where? At the reservoir about three miles from our place, or…"Actually, I was about 900 miles away, in my hometown. On the way back to my car, I ran into another angler, and raised a hand in greeting. "Yeah, that's the one," I mumbled, giving a vague, dismissive reply. Her tone immediately softened. "Then I'll come pick you up. Let's have a proper talk."I frowned. Had Christina hit her head today? She'd never spoken to me so gently after getting mad at me before. The handle of my fish bucket started wobbling, seemingly about

  • You Missed the Boat   Chapter 5

I didn't know when it started, but at some point, Christina had allowed Adrian to invade every corner of her life and learn everything about her.The seven years I had spent with her were nothing more than reflections in the water—mere illusions. After that, I watched as Christina and Adrian visited all the scenic spots, sampled all the delicacies, and took photos like a couple. Gradually, my heart became numb. There was barely any pollution in my hometown, and the water's surface reflected the clear blue sky. I took a photo without thinking, but I didn't open the chat window with Christina right away. In the past, I couldn't wait to share every interesting little moment in my life with her. Now, I no longer felt like doing that. While I was still lost in thought, a message from Christina popped up."Jeremiah, don't forget to water my two golden pothos plants. I want to bring them to the new house after we get married."Her tone was matter-of-fact, just like the way she sounded
