MasukAs if she were caught doing something naughty, Lotte shot to her feet and began brushing sand off her backside. She could feel David still watching her; however, she couldn’t get her head to lift enough to give the Doctor direct eye contact. Charlotte had never been star-struck before and couldn’t fathom why on Earth she would be now. David wasn’t even famous or anyone she would second glance at on the street if she passed him by… Would she?
Still chipper from sunshine and fresh air, Jeffery continued with his relaxed babble. “We were talking about doing some barbecuing tonight. Want to join? I am super handy at the grill.”
David answered back in a soft tone of voice, “That sounds lovely… I’ll see if Romy has made any other plans for us tonight.”
At the thought of Romy and her ‘plans’, Charlotte’s stomach did a flip, and she very much wanted to sink into the sand beneath her feet. “Where is Romy?” She mumbled.
The Doctor sighed, “She has been out and about looking for you. Apparently, her cellphone went missing the other night, and she couldn’t remember your number to save her life.” Taking a step closer, so that Lotte’s downward gaze had to find the buttons on his shirt at least, he continued. “We had stopped at the bakery first, but Julian said that you had worked yourself into a well-earned afternoon off. That’s a good girl.”
Those words… They made Lotte’s heart sing. Before she could stop herself, her hazel gaze swept up to meet David’s. She wanted to beg him for more compliments - more praises! Instead, she noted the way that his hand extended out to hers, and immediately the excitement faded into apprehension.
“How about we head back to the apartment and freshen up?” David proposed. “We can come back later and enjoy dinner with your friend…”
“Jeffery,” The other man answered quickly. “My neighbors are bringing potato salad and coleslaw… I’ve got enough steaks to feed an army… want to bring dessert?”
“Perfect,” David replied, already taking Lotte’s hand before she was certain if she would be able to maintain physical contact without embarrassingly passing out.
She looked back at Jeffery, ready to give a funny ‘goodbye’, but then her words choked in the back of her throat, and it was all she could do to simply wave. Tagging along beside David, her heart ready to beat right out of her chest, Lotte wasn’t sure if the bubbling inside of her was a happy kind… or one that dreaded seeing her Aunt again.
Romy was, of course, waiting in David’s car as she bobbed her head to the beat coming from the radio. Upon seeing her niece, the older woman’s smile twisted into a teasing expression as she called out, “There is our party foul! What the hell did you do with our pizza?”
Lotte wasn’t in the mood for games - or teasing - so she just slipped into the back seat and fixed her gaze on a small scuff on the back of her Aunt’s chair, which she hadn’t noticed the day before. It was close to her feet and no more than the length of her thumbnail. She wondered if one of David’s children had made it by accident. Lotte had a feeling that David had probably laughed it off and hadn’t thought about it again. He seemed like that kind of Dad…
“Did we have any plans for tonight?” The Doctor asked the woman sitting in his passenger seat.
Romy snickered like a two-year-old with their hand caught in the cookie jar. “Outside of more fucking?”
David’s gaze shot to the back seat, his eyes filled with an unspoken apology as they fell on Charlotte. Clearing his throat, the older man patiently tried again, “Do we have any dinner plans for tonight?”
Once again, Romy made a noise that sounded incredibly immature. Fortunately, this time, David didn’t let her answer as he told the woman/child about Jeffery’s invitation. “Why can’t we just stay in?” Romy whined. “Jeffery annoys me, and I honestly don’t want to eat in a place where I can get sand in my food.”
Trying to ignore the fact that her Aunt had just insulted one of her friends, Charlotte piped up from her seat with a new plan. “How about you just drop me off back here later, then, and have dinner somewhere else? You can pick me up after.”
“Lazy,” Romy teased. “I swear this girl won’t walk anywhere if she can bum a ride… How about you just have Jeffery come get you instead? He can be a gentleman and take you home after.”
The woman’s idea didn’t appear to settle well with David. The man frowned as he brought his vehicle to life and managed to maneuver it away from the curb. “What if Jeffery would like to have a few, well-earned, drinks with his dinner? Besides, I did agree to bring pie.”
This had Romy cackling again, “You want to bring pie to a barbecue filled with bakers? Don’t you think they have had enough ‘pie’ throughout the week? Why would you do that to them?”
There was a long silence that followed, one in which Lotte tried to read David’s expression. She could tell that he wasn’t happy about something, and that made her unhappy as well. Biting down on her tongue, the girl tried to think of something, anything, to relieve the tension that was suffocating the vehicle. At a loss, she tried for the only topic she knew well… Baking. “We don’t serve ‘Hello-Dolly Pie’ unless it is summertime. Jeffery loves Hello-Dollies…”
That did the trick; David looked back at Lotte with a smile, “I’ve never had a ‘Hello Dolly’ before. Want to teach me how to make it?”
Charlotte’s mouth began watering at the thought.
Charlotte had no idea how far back she had planned to go. At first, she wanted space, but then curiosity got the better of her, and she quickly grew determined to find the back of the property. Assuming there would be a sign or a fence, the girl continued onward, even after her feet grew numb. Apples of different colors still clung tightly to the trees forming a wall around the girl, like Christmas ornaments. They glistened as moonlight broke through the thick fog overhead. … Still, Lotte shuffled along, her back hunching against the icy breeze. She didn’t know what she planned to do once the orchard came to an end, or if she discovered that it already had and that she was currently on someone else’s property… The idea of turning back and making the journey home sounded daunting, no matter how many ways she looked at it. And her cell phone… Whose last few minutes were a haunting reminder that she needed money soon, was still sitting in her borrowed room back at the house. Sighing, t
“Oh, David,” the moan came again. This time, Lotte was certain it was Lila. Unable to help herself, the girl moved back toward the small crack she had made in between the doors. She was lucky that it was already growing dark and that the three in the corner weren’t able to make out her silhouette. By now, she was able to just make out that Alana was actually sitting cross-legged over the table top. The legs that Charlotte had originally thought were hers actually belonged to David. The Doctor was lying on his back, his head resting on Alana’s lap. As for Lila, she was on top of David, riding him with a slow, steady pace. “Mmm, David,” the redhead moaned again. Her rhythm slowed just a bit more, as if she wanted to make that moment last as long as she could. Shock spread through Charlotte - David was cheating on her Aunt? Yet even as the girl’s astonishment subsided, it surprised her even more that anger wasn’t even an inch of an emotion she was feeling. Shouldn’t she be enraged for
Filing into the house, Lotte was immediately met with shouting… Brandon’s shouting. “You are such a bitch!” The younger teen roared. “Why do you have to ruin everything?” “Language,” Henry warned. “And it doesn’t sound like she is trying to ruin anything. Romy just enjoys spending time with you boys. Doesn’t that sound nice?” “Dinner is almost ready,” Levi cut in. “Grandpa, I’ll get you a plate to go.” “Thank you, sweet boy,” The older man called back. “I absolutely appreciate that. I’ll bring out my electric skillet for breakfast tomorrow morning, should anyone like to join me for pancakes.” “But I want to eat dinner with Grandpa,” Matty protested.“See!” Brandon started in again, “Even Matty doesn’t like this. Why are you so against our family spending time together?” Before Romy could answer, James and Lotte stepped into the mess. “What the hell is going on?” The muscled man demanded, his eyes already full of fire as they settled in on the drunk blonde sitting at one end of
When David finally made it to the truck, Lotte was buckled into the middle seat, trying desperately to sit as far away from James as possible. Though they still hadn’t managed to wrap up their discussion of her living arrangements, Charlotte was grateful the man behaved himself around his brother. David was beside himself with smiles. “I can’t wait to show the boys the church. Levi is going to lose his mind. He once tried to sneak out and visit it when he was younger; however, he couldn’t find the way and came home spooked about the woods.” Lotte could sympathize. “Those woods are terrifying at night…” James eyed her, “And what was Chris talking about back there when he said you claimed to see someone in the woods?” Charlotte shrugged, “Honestly, it was probably my imagination. I had never seen bones before, it was getting dark, and I was worried about Romy and Megan…” At the waitress's name, the girl looked back toward the Diner. She could just make out the outline of Megan throu
Leading the way out of the church, the Mayor stopped to stretch just out of reach of the soft rain droplets hitting against the stone steps. He fixed Lotte with a grin. “So are you heading back with these guys, or were you going to pull another all-nighter here?”Charlotte rolled her eyes, “Are you kidding? I have work tomorrow… Good God, do I want to bake something.”“That a girl,” The man cheered. “And don’t think this gets you out of volunteering for the winter festival… I’ll be faxing Barbara what we need.” “Faxing?” Lotte snorted. “What, are you 50 or something?” “Ah, now,” Mayor Moone scoffed. “See, and I was about to offer to carry you over all this nasty mud.” Hopping about, Charlotte had just managed to get her sneakers on and pinned Chris with a look. “You don’t think I can manage a bit of mud after everything I’ve been through the last few weeks? Your girlfriend hit me in the face, and I took it like a boss!” Just as the muscled man flinched at her words, a pair of arms
The look David gave her was enough to chill Lotte to the bone. All of the amusement she had felt over catching Chris and Sara vanished in two heartbeats. Clenching her fists together, the girl took a deep breath and then rotated her body so she could face the Doctor. “It was very dark when we came in. Romy and I were using our cellphone flashlights… Though I know for a fact that Megan was here, and will be more than happy to discuss that with her later. If anyone else had been in the building, they had done a good job of hiding it.” A sudden popping sound to Charlotte’s left had her gazing over to James. He was also clenching his fists together, though it was clear from the expression on his face that he was doing it out of rage, not fear. “Why the fuck were the two of you out here to begin with? Did you have some kind of death wish?” Lotte sighed, “Romy wanted to see this place after hearing all about it from Lucy, Lynn, Allison, and me. My Aunt loves haunted places, and the way th
The rest of the ride back to David’s was all praises in Lotte’s name. Many of which the girl didn’t catch because her ears were buzzing with embarrassment. She was grateful when the car was finally parked, and they were making their way up the walk to the house. It smelled amazing. Charlotte had h
Lotte felt a chill run down her spine, and it remained with her throughout the rest of the day. Chris hadn’t taken the time to explain himself; he just stood up and led her to the dining room for some salmon and a fancy pasta with truffle. Though the other women were beside themselves with giggles
Outside of the Mayor’s unexpected visit, Lotte’s morning had stayed relatively quiet. Brandon and Levi had gone home, and it had mostly just been Barbara. The two talked about basic topics as Charlotte checked the store computer for email orders, and the store manager swept. Finally, around one, ju
As they pulled up to ‘The Market’, Lotte led the way through the double doors and straight to her little area near the back. Levi broke off to find some groceries for dinner, and Brandon made himself comfortable near the check-out area as he waited for Barbara, who was finishing up with some paperw
