After saying that, I turned and headed straight for the bedroom.

Julian Mercer watched me walk away, a helpless smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Don’t be like this.

“I understand that you’re upset, but Vivian really does need my help.”

I ignored him.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, still holding the agreement.

“Why are you making such a big deal out of this? Transferring the house to Vivian is only temporary.

“Once she gets back on her feet, the house will still be ours.

“Do you really have to call off the wedding over this?”

His tone was so certain. He assumed I couldn’t let go of five years together.

He was convinced that if I cooled off for a few days, I would come crawling back and apologize.

Then I would obediently go to the county recorder’s office, sign the paperwork, and hand over the house my parents had paid for in full.

But this time, I wouldn’t turn back.

The next morning, I had barely woken up when I heard Julian talking on the phone in the living room.

“Yes, the banquet schedule stays the same.

“The rest of the arrangements don’t need to change either. Just follow the original plan.”

I walked out of the bedroom and saw him checking off items on the wedding itinerary with a pen.

When he saw me, he casually put the paperwork away.

“You’re up? Perfect. The wedding planner said we need to go try on the wedding dress this afternoon.

“Remember to bring the deposit receipt. Don’t lose it before then.”

I stood by the dining table and looked at him coldly.

“Julian, we agreed yesterday. We’re not getting legally married, and we’re not having a wedding.”

Julian poured me a glass of milk and pushed it toward me.

“Don’t be childish.

“I can talk to you about the house again. I’ll speak to Vivian about it.

“But both our parents have already been notified, and the invitations have gone out to our relatives and friends.

“If you cancel the wedding now, where does that leave me?”

He hadn’t even asked what I wanted. He had simply decided for me.

In his mind, I would eventually give in.

He thought I was kind enough that I couldn’t bear to watch his benefactor’s daughter end up on the streets.

So he had never intended to cancel the wedding.

He was still moving forward with everything as planned, certain that I would put on the wedding dress and walk toward him with a smile.

That afternoon, my phone kept buzzing.

It was a series of messages from Vivian Ross.

“I’m sorry, Cora.

“I really had no idea Julian would ask you for this.

“I feel terrible. If it weren’t for me, you two wouldn’t have fought.

“I can just stay at a budget hotel. You really don’t have to fall out with him over me.”

She never said that she didn’t want to stay at a hotel. She only said that she had nowhere to go.

She was making it sound as though if I refused, I would be forcing her to sleep on the streets.

Before I could reply, Julian called me on video.

When I answered, his face appeared on the screen, dark with anger.

“What did you say to Vivian?

“She called me crying, saying she feels like she’s become a burden.

“Can’t you be a little more understanding? Her dad just died. I’m the only person she has left to rely on.

“If you really love me, why can’t you make an exception for my benefactor?

“Do you really have to leave her with nowhere to go?”

Hearing the accusatory tone in his voice extinguished the last bit of hope I had.

He didn’t care about my feelings at all.

All he cared about was whether he could play the hero in Vivian’s eyes.

I looked at the familiar yet suddenly strange man on my screen.

“Julian, if you care about her that much, then go live with her.

“This house was bought by my parents. It has nothing to do with the Ross family.

“I’m not transferring it. Not now, not ever.

“Get that through your head!”

With that, I ended the call.

Then I blocked Julian.

I blocked Vivian too.

At last, the world was quiet.

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, spilling over the white wedding gown and bathing it in a warm, almost sacred glow.A year later, I stood on a wedding stage once again. But this time, the man standing beside me was Elliot. The officiant’s passionate voice echoed throughout the reception hall.“Now, let’s welcome the groom’s father to the stage to offer his blessings to the newlyweds.”But the person who walked onto the stage was my father. In his hands was an elegant red velvet box.Inside was the key to the house that had once caused so much conflict.“Cora. Elliot.”My father’s voice trembled with emotion, but it was still filled with strength.“Last year, I handed this key to Julian, hoping it would bring you two happiness.“Instead, it nearly ruined your life.“Today, I’m giving this key back to you.“This isn’t about some so-called property. It’s something your father wants you to have—a sense of security and the confidence to stand on your own.

To take care of the remaining legal matters concerning the house once and for all, I hired Elliot Hayes as my attorney. He was the youngest partner at Daniel Whitaker’s law firm. With his gold-rimmed glasses and composed demeanor, he looked refined and levelheaded. He carefully reviewed my purchase agreement and payment records.“Ms. Mitchell, your parents did exactly the right thing.“This house was the result of decades of their hard work. Since they paid for it in full, it is legally your separate property acquired before marriage. There’s no ambiguity about that.“This isn’t about being suspicious. It’s the strongest protection your parents could give you.“Anyone trying to make you give up a portion of this asset is essentially gambling with your future.”His words were like a gentle breeze, instantly clearing away the gloom in my heart. As we spent more time together, a subtle attraction began to develop between us.Elliot never fawned over me because of my family’s fina

A month later, my phone chimed with a bank notification.$18,300 had been deposited into my account. The only note read: Repayment.I froze for a moment before Mark called me.“Cora, you got the money, right?“Julian paid it back.“That guy really went all out.“To come up with the money, he sold the small house he owned back home.“He even sold the car he’d been driving for three years for next to nothing.“He really has nothing left now.”I held my phone, feeling absolutely nothing.“Did he do all that to make me feel sorry for him?”Mark sighed.“Who knows? Maybe he just wanted to preserve what little dignity he had left.“He said he owed you that money and had to pay you back.“He also said he doesn’t have the money for the $5,000 cancellation fee and the wedding expenses yet, but he’ll pay you back eventually.“Cora, Julian really has it rough now.”I said nothing and hung up.A short while later, a friend request popped up on my social media. It was from Julian

Julian spent the entire night waiting outside my building. When I stepped out early the next morning, he was still standing there like a statue. The moment he saw me, he stumbled toward me and grabbed the hem of my coat.“Cora, I really know I was wrong.“Vivian was lying to me. She’s been playing me this whole time.“I went to confront her yesterday, but she blocked me. She wouldn’t even answer my calls.“I’ve lost everything. My reputation is ruined, I lost my job, and my whole life has fallen apart.”He looked up at me. His eyes were bloodshot, his face haggard, and he looked utterly miserable.“Cora, we were together for five years. Can’t you forgive me just this once?“I promise I’ll never meddle in anyone else’s business again.“I’ll devote myself to you. I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.“As long as we can start over, I’ll do anything for you.”I looked down at the hand clutching my coat. His fingers were rough, with dirt caked beneath his nails.

Three days later, Julian showed up at my door.He looked ten years older. His beard was unshaven, and dark circles hung beneath his eyes.He clutched his phone so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.“Cora, let me see those screenshots.”His voice was hoarse.I said nothing. I simply handed him the printed copies of the messages.I had paid a private investigator a considerable amount of money to retrieve them from Vivian’s best friend’s phone.Julian took the pages with trembling hands. The first page showed a conversation from a year ago.We had just bought the house back then and hadn’t started renovating it yet.Vivian had sent a voice message.“Does that idiot Julian really think he owns half the house? I looked at the purchase agreement. Cora’s parents paid for the entire thing. He doesn’t have a cent invested in it.”Her friend replied, “Then why do you still want it?”“Why wouldn’t I? It’s free.“If I play the victim a little and bring up my dad, he’ll feel

Julian wanted to play the saint, but I wasn’t about to let him have it his way.Didn’t he love posting on social media?Didn’t he love playing the victim in front of his friends?I stayed up all night gathering every transfer record and contract. Then I put together one long image that clearly listed every expense related to the house we’d been planning to make our home. The purchase price was $420,000, paid entirely from my parents' account. The $21,000 renovation was charged to my salary account. The $11,000 I spent on furniture and appliances was all put on installment plans through my credit cards.Even the diamond engagement ring Julian proposed with had been secretly purchased with my own money.I posted the image on my social media. My caption was simple:“Some people use their future in-laws’ life savings to play the generous hero. Is that what they call repaying a debt of gratitude? @Julian Mercer, have some dignity. If you’re going to live off someone else’s money,
