Chapter 7

Author: Star Pomelo
Stephanie was momentarily stunned. She didn't expect Adrian to ask her such a question. Also, he seemed a little… unhappy at the moment.

But why, though? Was it really because she insisted on returning to the team meeting despite being ill?

She was very sure that she and Adrian weren't close enough for him to show such concern for her.

"Well, not really…"

Honestly, Stephanie just wanted to drop by her colleagues' private room and tell them that she'd be going home for the night.

But when she recalled the way those colleagues crowded around Kiara earlier, she felt that it was unnecessary for her to do so.

She wasn't the main character of tonight's dinner anyway, so no one would care if she left early.

Suddenly, someone knocked on the private room's door a few times in a row. A man, who was seemingly Adrian's assistant, stood at the doorway.

"Everyone's waiting for you, Mr. Hawke."

It didn't matter what type of business Adrian was conducting at the table—he'd always be the main character. No business negotiation could proceed without him.

"I'm sorry for delaying your schedule, Mr. Hawke," Stephanie quickly said.

"It's fine." Adrian was back to his detached self. It was as though his displeasure was just a figment of Stephanie's imagination.

After that, Adrian walked out of the private room. When he walked past his assistant, Harry Newman, he shot the latter a look.

Harry nodded right away in understanding.

Once Adrian left, Stephanie rested in the private room for a little longer before leaving the hotel. As she stood on the pavement, she was about to flag down a cab when she saw a black car rolling to a stop next to her.

The car door on the driver's side was opened from the inside. Harry could be seen getting out of the car.

He smiled at Stephanie as he approached her. "Ms. Ford, Mr. Hawke has ordered me to take you home."

"There's no need for that." Stephanie quickly turned him down. "I've already troubled Mr. Hawke enough as it is."

"It's fine. This is nothing to Mr. Hawke," Harry explained. "Besides, Hawke Group and Ford Group have had many business collaborations with each other over the past two years. Soon, they'll be collaborating on a deeper scale."

He paused momentarily before adding, "That's why Mr. Hawke finds it necessary to take good care of you, Ms. Ford."

Since both companies had many collaborations going on, Stephanie had a feeling that she'd see Adrian more often once she went home for good. It'd be bad for both parties if she kept turning Adrian's offer down.

"Thank you for your offer, then."

"You're far too courteous, Ms. Ford. This way, please."

Harry took the initiative to open the car door for Stephanie.

At the same time, Adrian sat by a window overlooking the cityscape in a fancy VIP private room located on the top floor of the hotel. He looked downward, where Stephanie could be seen getting into his car. Shortly after that, Harry drove away from the hotel.

A bold associate decided to crack a joke at that moment.

"See something interesting outside the window, Mr. Hawke?"

Adrian averted his gaze, his response cold as ice. "No."

Since he refused to answer, no one dared to ask the same question.

Adrian pulled out his phone and tapped on WhatsApp's icon. His gaze swept across his private chat with Stephanie. Then, it landed on the latest text his mother, Amelia Sutton, had sent to him last night.

"The Fords have agreed to the marriage alliance. You're at Hydroton now, aren't you? I heard that Stephanie is also there. You should visit her. Pay more attention to her, will you?"

All he had replied was, "Okay."

Adrian seemed to have thought of something, for he texted Amelia again. "Mom, where is Dr. Lombard right now?"

Amelia was quick to respond. "Oh, she traveled abroad again last month. It was an urgent trip, and she didn't tell me where she went, too. I can't get in touch with her at the moment. Why are you looking for her, by the way?"

Adrian's gaze darkened slightly.

"It was nothing. Let me know if you can get in touch with Dr. Lombard again."

Harry drove Stephanie back to Tyler's residence. As she stood at the front door, she took a few deep breaths to center herself.

For the longest time, she had viewed this place as her home. But now, it was nothing more than a temporary shelter for her. If anything, this place grossed her out.

If not for the fact that she was worried about alerting Kiara and Tyler regarding her secret investigation into the car accident, Stephanie wouldn't have chosen to return to this place at all.

Taking advantage of Kiara and Tyler's absence, Stephanie began searching through the whole place, with Tyler's study being her top priority. Alas, she couldn't locate any useful clues.

Then again, since Tyler was adamant on concealing Kiara's crime for her, there was no way he'd left any evidence behind, let alone keep it in his own residence.

At this point, Stephanie was just latching onto a trace of hope.

Just as she got out of the study, she heard the sounds of the front door being opened. Tyler and Kiara then walked into the residence. They were even holding hands at that time.

Amelia stared in disbelief. "You already heard those tales, and yet you still claim that he looks very kind?""Well, those incidents happened when Grandpa Jedidiah was still young." Adrian adapted a matter-of-fact tone. "As far as I remember, he has always been kind to me."The corner of Amelia's mouth twitched in response. After that, she did her best to recall what Jedidiah was like.Jedidiah had only moved to the monastery on a long-term basis once Adrian turned 18 years old. Before that, whenever Amelia met Jedidiah, she kept thinking that he wasn't one who liked smiling, seeing as his expression was always stoic-looking. Occasionally, when someone made a mistake, one glance from him was able to drill raw terror into that poor person's mind. How was Jedidiah kind-looking in any sense?Whatever. Everyone always claimed that grandchildren often preferred their grandparents more than their own parents. Maybe Jedidiah was very kind to Adrian when Amelia wasn't around. With that t

"Okay." Adrian gently nuzzled his chin against Stephanie's head. "It so happens that I share the same sentiments as you.""Does this mean we're in tune with each other?""That has always been the case for us."Warmth flooded Stephanie's heart at that moment. She couldn't resist tightening the embrace while feeling Adrian's warmth.Upon returning to the Ford residence, she asked a maid on the first floor, "Where's my dad?"At this time, Owen should either be in the study or in his bedroom. Stephanie intended to discuss a company-related matter with him right now."Mr. Ford hasn't come home yet."Stephanie raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by the maid's answer. But now that she thought about it, it was quite normal for Owen to come home later than usual, seeing as he might have to deal with some matters. So, she didn't dwell on it and returned to her room.…After Adrian dropped Stephanie off at home, he returned to the Hawke residence.Amelia happened to be seated on a c

As soon as Stephanie's words fell, she suddenly noticed the dangerous glint in Adrian's eyes. A thought struck her immediately, but it was far too late for her to escape, for Adrian's lips descended onto hers immediately. The domineering kiss immediately robbed her of her breath against her will."Mmm!" Stephanie could barely breathe from the kiss. The corners of her eyes started to redden at the same time.Thank goodness they were the only ones by the lake. The employees of Jardine dared not disturb them without their orders, after all.All strength was drained from Stephanie thanks to that kiss. She could only hammer her fists weakly against Adrian's shoulder, only for him to clasp her wrists together effortlessly.Once the kiss was finally over, Stephanie felt incredibly dizzy. She didn't drink any alcohol at all, and yet she felt very tipsy at the moment."I'm easy to trick, huh?" Adrian gripped her by the chin gently to force her to look into his eyes.Unwilling to yield j

Adrian patted Stephanie on the head, an amused smile on his lips."Why do I have a feeling that you're up to no good?""Nah!" Stephanie shook her head while beaming at him. "It's just that I finally succeeded in what I wanted to do.""Which is?""I'm not telling you!"Stephanie continued grinning cheekily at Adrian. But the way her beautiful eyes sparkled added an alluring flair to her beauty. Adrian couldn't help gulping at the sight.Instead of pressing on the topic, he opened the car door for Stephanie. After driving for almost an hour, Adrian's car finally stopped outside its destination. The restaurant they were dining at didn't look like a typical restaurant, but rather, a private residence. After Adrian and Stephanie got out of the car, a staff member quickly welcomed them with a dazzling smile and a polite bow. "Mr. Hawke, Ms. Ford, welcome to our humble restaurant.""Isn't this… Jardine?"Jardine wasn't exactly famous in Jetterpolis. In fact, only a handful of peop

Dominic raised an eyebrow, clearly shocked."Wait… You're seriously in love with her?"Although he had found out about the things concerning Adrian and Stephanie from his phone calls with Amelia in the past, the sight of Adrian looking so lovesick still shocked him to the core. Two years ago, before he left Jetterpolis, Dominic really thought that Adrian would remain single for the rest of his life. To think that Adrian was actually in a relationship right now…Of course, Dominic was elated to see Adrian finding someone he truly loved."You must bring her over to my place for a meal someday," he insisted. "I'll have Josette whip up a few of her signature dishes and serve you two well."Dominic and his wife, Josette Addams, didn't live in the Sutton residence. Instead, they lived in their own villa.Adrian nodded slightly. "I know. I'll find a good time and drop by your place with Stephanie for a visit in the future.""Okay." Dominic grinned at him.But when he remembered Hecto

Hector's expression froze on his face. For a moment, he didn't know what to say. After all, he knew that he had betrayed Nadia Blume, his deceased wife. Now that Hector thought about it, when Dominic was arguing with him earlier, the sentence he had repeated the most was, "Have you ever felt guilty for what you had done to Mom?"Hector let out a deep sigh before collapsing onto the chair behind him, looking very depressed."Grandpa." Adrian looked at him. "When are you going to stop this farce?"Hector turned his head to avoid looking at his grandson. "There are some things in this world that I cannot explain to you.""Tomorrow, Stephanie and I will come visit you," Adrian stated. "I hope that you won't stress her out."Hector let out a chuckle. "So, you specifically came here today just to tell me this, huh?""Yes, Grandpa," Adrian admitted that fact in a straight-forward manner. "You've caused her a lot of trouble in the past. I don't want to see her become sad because of you
