Chapter 16

Unfortunately, things were just as she had dreaded. The young female secretary was pretty but extremely unfriendly. As she walked out of the CEO’s office with a dark expression, she shot Vivian a cold glance and asked, “What’s there to talk about?”

Vivian flashed a warm smile at her. “He’s young and has made a silly mistake. We should give him a second chance to redeem himself, don’t you think? I’m here to apologize for him.”

The secretary snorted. “Of course, he’ll have a second chance: in prison! It’s one thing for him to be poor, but it’s another to be insensible. Someone should teach him a good lesson.”

Her words were harsh. The boy standing behind Vivian could not help but try to defend himself emotionally, “I didn’t steal your phone. You’re the one who advanced on me. I turned you down, and now you’re trying to frame me!”

When Vivian heard this, she uttered a silent curse. The authenticity of this claim aside, this was definitely not the place to be exposing the secretary’s unrefined actions! As she expected, the secretary’s expression changed. She gave two cold snorts and said, “We shouldn’t take your word or mine to see if you’ve been wrongly accused. We can just wait for the cops to come.”

Vivian hastily tried to appease her. Just when the situation was getting slightly out of hand, the elevator doors slid open. Someone asked drily, “What’s the matter?”

His pitch was not high, but he managed to talk over everyone. Vivan felt as if she had been pricked by a needle, so she quickly turned to look at the speaker and saw the cold-eyed Edward Levin.

The secretary extinguished her arrogant flames of anger. She called out in a wronged tone, “Mister Levin.”

Edward Levin looked sideways at her, then at Vivian, and finally at the person-in-charge of the security department. The person-in-charge quickly recounted the events to him. When he finished listening, he looked at Vivian and asked, “Miss Carraway, is this your student?”

She had a firm grip on her student’s arm to prevent him from acting rashly again. She answered Edward’s question, “Yes, he’s under my supervision. He’s a classmate of Miss Jones’ who can vouch for his character. He’s not someone who would steal.”

When the secretary heard this, she was about to flare up again but was suppressed by a look from Edward.

He looked at Vivian again and said drily, “Since he’s your student, Miss Carraway, you should take him back.”

Vivian did not expect this from him. She was slightly bewildered. When she saw him lifting his brows slightly, she hastily tugged her student and thanked him, “Thank you. Thank you very much!”

Worried that something else might happen, she hastily said goodbye and led her student away. When they were about to reach the elevator, he suddenly called out to them, “Miss Carraway.”

Edward’s lips were slightly curled as he asked, “Do you have time tonight? Perhaps, for dinner?”

She was slightly stunned, but she managed a response, “Sure. We’ll treat you to a meal.”

He would not be fooled. He asked her with half a smile, “Miss Carraway, am I that low of a character in your eyes? It’s only dinner. Are you worried that I might gobble you up somehow?”

She could not continue to be vague without being rude when he was being this straightforward, hence she smiled and said in a poised manner, “Mister Levin, you’ve misunderstood me. My fiancé...he’s a petty man. He doesn’t like me going out with a member of the other sex. He’s the kind of person who’s jealous even when I go out with my friends, but I can’t really do anything about that.”

There was a mocking sneer on his lips now as he spoke, “Miss Carraway, I think you’ve misunderstood as well. I’m not asking for your hand here. I merely have certain matters about Noelle that I’d like to discuss with you. However, we can’t really do that if someone else is around.”
