Chapter 1

Author: Bubble Sauce
When the Sherman family’s wealth passed down to my mother’s generation, she was the only daughter left.

My grandfather, Hugo Sherman, was overjoyed when I was born. He threw a three-day party for everyone to join.

The very next day, he gathered the family elders at the main estate and put the family’s golden seal in my name.

Unfortunately, I did not inherit any of the Sherman family’s talent for accounting.

When I was six, Hugo tried to teach me to read accounts on a ledger.

I had stared at that page full of numbers for a solid hour. In the end, I just played with the counting board.

He had been so frustrated when he saw that.

The next day, he picked a distant relative from a side branch of the family. It was my cousin, Simon Evan.

He was three years older than me and sharp as a tack.

I would cry just trying to memorize a single page of accounts. He could read something once and have it memorized.

By twelve, he was shadowing the head accountant down to the docks to inspect shipments. By fifteen, he could straighten out the bad debts of two stores all on his own.

I was thrilled.

From then on, whenever I wanted a treat, he kept the books for me. Whenever I wanted to see a show, he held a meeting with the accountants for me.

Even when Hugo scolded me for being lazy, I just ducked behind Simon.

Eventually, Hugo laid down a rule.

The head of the family business served one-year terms. It expired every New Year’s Eve.

On New Year’s Day, the head of the family would seal the document again to reinstate him.

Back then, Simon was still young. Hugo had just smiled and patted his shoulder.

“Just go through the motions with Clarisse every New Year. As long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters.”

So, for twelve years, Simon came to me with the ledgers every year.

Usually, before I could even finish reading one, I would be so sleepy that I slumped over the table.

“Didn’t we do just fine last year?”

I yawned and stamped the golden seal.

Simon would always laugh helplessly and ask, “You don’t even know how much we made, and you’re just going to seal it?”

I stated my reply as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. At the same time, I casually pushed a snack into my mouth.

“Isn’t that what you’re here for?”

Over time, everyone outside knew Simon as the head of the family business.

The managers of the thirteen family banks treated him with the utmost respect. Whenever anything went wrong at any of the seventy-two shops, they all reported to him first.

I found the arrangement to be perfect.

That changed last spring, when Simon said he wanted to marry Grace Truman.

The Trumans did not think much of him. To them, he was just a distant relative who worked for the Sherman family. They would not accept him for the longest of times.

For the first time ever, Simon came begging to me.

I had been eating dessert at that time.

After hearing him out, I asked him, “Do you really like her?”

He nodded.

The very next day, I had eighty-eight chests of wedding gifts carried to the Truman residence.

They instantly changed their outlook on Simon.

To help Grace marry in style, I picked three of the most profitable cosmetics shops under my name and gave them as a special present. When she learned about it, she treated me even better.

When she accompanied me to the fair, she picked out jewelry for me. She even personally delivered a cake from the east side of town the very next day after I mentioned it in passing.

Before her wedding, she held my hand and said with a smile, “Clarisse, once Simon gets busy, you’ll have me to keep you company. We’re a family now.”

I was over the moon.

On her wedding day, I picked a box of pearls from my mother’s private collection and gave them to her.

The next day, I brought a gold hair ornament to the newlyweds’ room to see her.

Simon had gone to the main office. Only Grace was in the room.

She smiled as usual as she pulled me into the back courtyard.

“Clarisse, you didn’t actually think I was nice to you because I liked you, did you?”

When Grace learned that Simon had handed over the seal, she made a huge scene.Instead of smashing things around, she just sat in the room and had the fiercest fight with Simon yet.“Are you just going to accept this? Are you just going to throw away twelve years of connections?”He only replied briefly, “They were never mine.”She went completely silent when she heard that. The next day, she packed up her belongings and went back to the Truman family. Before leaving, she came to see me one last time. She stood at the entrance to the east courtyard. Her face looked far worse than it had on her wedding day.“You really don’t want those three shops back?”I shook my head. “What’s given away is yours. If you sold them too cheap, that’s on you.”She was stunned. She probably had not expected me to actually let it go.But she still had to pay back the five thousand dollars she took from the public accounts. The money Nicholas drew from the main office had to be made up, too.As f

That night, Simon came to see me alone. For once, Grace did not follow. He had no contract in his hands and no ledger. He just sat across from me and said nothing for a long time.In the end, I spoke first. “What do you want?”He stared at the family’s golden seal on the table. “What were these twelve years of mine? What did they even amount to?”I was caught off guard for a moment. “You were the head of the family business.”He laughed at himself. “The kind that gets reinstated every year?”“Yes.”“So, it wasn’t just you all humoring me?”“No.”He closed his eyes and said, “But Grandpa told me back then to go through a formality with you every year.”I thought for a moment. Then, I remembered, “He wasn’t wrong.”He looked up. “What do you mean?”“To me, it was always just a formality because for twelve years, I always picked you.”He was stunned when he heard that. I pushed the old ledger Albert had sent over toward him. Every year, on the second day of the New

I had thought Grace would settle down after being put in her place a few times. Instead, she turned around and invited the Zouch family over. That noon, I had just finished reviewing two ledgers. Lily came from the front hall with a message. “Mrs. Zouch from Lorell has arrived with her second son.”I rubbed my temples. “Who invited them?”Lily said nothing. The answer was already obvious. By the time I reached the front hall, Grace was smiling and drinking tea with Kelly Zouch. On the table lay that marriage contract. I had torn it, but it seemed she had rewritten it.“Clarisse, you’re here,” she said as she waved with a smile.“You were just throwing a tantrum the past few days. The Zouch family is showing such sincerity. You should at least meet Leo.”Kelly looked a bit awkward. Beside her, Leo Zouch stood up directly.“Ms. Sherman, may I ask, did you yourself ever agree to this proposal?”Grace’s expression shifted slightly. “Since when does a young lady get to decide her

Simon was silent for a long time. Only after the other family members had dispersed did he call me into the side hall.“Clarisse, let’s talk. Just the two of us.”I did not turn him down. Twelve years of history deserved at least a conversation. He shut the door and got straight to the point.“I misunderstood the Sherman family rules before. But replacing me out of nowhere may not be a good thing.”That carried more weight than Grace’s endless nagging. I gestured for him to continue.“I personally built the five trade caravans in the northwest. The shops in Ashford will only negotiate with me. I’ve worked with everyone from the managers to the shipowners for eight years. “You can take away my seal, but personal connections and loyalty can’t be replaced.”I nodded. “So?”He looked at me and went on. “Renew my term as usual this year. I don’t need it to be permanent. I’ll keep Grace in line. “When you find someone who can actually take over, I’ll leave.”It was not a threa

Grace was the first to react.“What’s there to go over? Simon has been running things for years. When has he ever screwed up?”I nodded. “That’s exactly why we’re going to give him credit where it’s due. After that, we’re going to go through the accounts from the past few days.”Simon looked up at me. “Clarisse, I know I didn’t do anything wrong.”“Good for you.”I had Albert open last year’s general ledger.I had to admit that Simon truly had not tampered with them. Last year, the Sherman family’s net profit rose fifteen percent over the year before. He had also reopened the northwestern trade route. Several bad debts were handled beautifully. Even a few family members nodded in approval after reading them. After I was done with the first ledger, I said, “Simon has done right by this family. By precedent, his management bonus and year-end reward will be paid in full.”Grace took the opportunity to say, “You hear that? The Sherman family earns this much all because of Simon

“We’re skipping this year’s formality.”The main hall fell silent at once.Simon held his breath and stared at me.When he finally caught on, he frowned. “Clarisse, don’t let a personal grudge get in the way of business.”Grace stood up and chimed in, “Tsk, I simply said a few things about your spending the other day. Is that really worth dragging the other family members into?“Simon has worked really hard for the Sherman family for twelve years. You can’t just dismiss him and expect everyone below to fall in line.”She was not wrong. Simon did not hold the position purely because he was part of the family. He had truly proven how capable he was over the past twelve years.Winston did not rush to speak for me. He simply looked at Simon and asked, “Did you really think the family seal is just for show?”Simon said in a serious tone, “At least over the years, the Sherman family business has never made any extra money because of that seal.”Winston nodded. “Okay, let’s put it t
