Chapter 2

Author: Bubble Sauce
I remained stunned for a long time. The hair ornament was still in my hand.

“What do you mean?”

Grace chuckled.

“Before the wedding, of course I had to play nice with you. Everyone knows Simon treats you like his own little sister.

“If I got on your bad side and you went home and complained, who knows if the Truman family’s eighty-eight chests of wedding gifts would have even made it through the door.”

She casually yanked the gold hair ornament from my arms and set it on the table.

“But things are different now. I am married to Simon.”

I frowned. “What of it?”

Amused by my reaction, she went on. “Simon runs the thirteen family banks and seventy-two shops. The managers answer to him.

“When something goes wrong, he’s the one they call. What do you bring to the table besides bearing the Sherman name?”

She leaned down and looked me in the eye.

“Do you really think that just because they let you stamp the golden seal every New Year, you’re actually in charge of the Sherman family?”

I looked at her in shock.

She only laughed even harder.

“Simon told me everything. Back in the day, Hugo set up some little ritual because he spoiled you and didn’t want you to feel useless. You actually took it seriously?”

My jaw dropped.

For a moment, I did not even know which part to address first.

So, that was how Simon had always viewed that seal.

When I remained quiet, Grace thought I was embarrassed.

She pulled a house token and tossed it lightly onto the table.

“I’ll be holding onto this for you.”

I looked down. That house token belonged to me.

When I was six, I had complained that carrying money around was too heavy, so Hugo had the main office make a house token especially for me.

With it, I could draw on the Sherman family account at any of their shops.

“Why?”

She leaned back in her chair and said, “You’re an unmarried young lady spending that much money in a month. What would people think?

“Simon worked hard for his money. From now on, you get two hundred dollars a month for pocket money. That’s plenty for you to buy makeup and girly things.”

I was even more confused. “But I’m just spending my own money.”

She sneered. “Your money?

“Have you ever lifted a finger for this business?

“Without Simon slaving away for you, do you think the Sherman family’s money just grows on trees?”

Tsk tsk.

To think that Grace had barely married into the family, and she already fancied herself the lady of the house and thought she could boss me around as she pleased.

What was more, she was already convinced the Sherman family’s fortune was something Simon had earned for me.

At that thought, I was just about to speak. But she had a maid bring over a thick ledger.

On the last page, a number was circled in red ink. Two hundred seventy-four thousand six hundred dollars.

“From smashing a calculator at seven to throwing a twenty-table party at the Asteria Tavern last year, every penny Simon’s spent on you is right here.

“I rounded it down for you to two hundred seventy thousand dollars.”

I flipped through a couple of pages.

It was not just my food and clothing. There were repairs to the family estate, the annual feast at the main office, and even the horses for the northwest caravan two years ago.

I almost laughed reading it.

But Grace pulled a marriage contract out from under the ledger.

“I’ve already asked after the second son of the Zouch family out in Lorell on your behalf.

“They will give us three hundred thousand dollars.

“Once you marry into the family, it’ll clear your debt nicely.”

I looked at her in shock. “Who told you to arrange my marriage?”

“It’s what’s best for you,” she said as she touched her still-flat belly and smiled.

“Once you’re married off, Simon and I should start our own family too. If we have a daughter, she’ll learn the business from her father growing up.

“That’s surely better than the Sherman family fortune going to someone who can’t even read a ledger.”

Finally, I understood that she did not just want to control my money. She wanted to marry me off and then replace me with her own daughter.

I picked up the marriage contract and tore it in half right in front of her.

“Grace, I’m the head of the family.

“My marriage is not yours to arrange.”

Her expression darkened. “Head of the family?”

She walked up and continued, “How many bank managers do you even know?

“Do you have any idea how much the Sherman family made last year?

“You can’t even tell me which routes the trade caravans take. You’re just riding on your family’s favor, hiding behind a fancy title.”

Just then, Ruby Hill’s voice came from outside the door.

“Mrs. Evan, watch your mouth!”

Ruby had served my mother since childhood.

When she came in and saw the IOU on the table and the torn marriage contract, her face turned pale with rage.

“Mr. Evan manages things on Ms. Sherman’s behalf. How can you turn around and charge her for debts?”

Grace shot her a cold glance. “On her behalf?

“How many more years are you people going to keep peddling that bedtime story?

“Simon has been carrying the entire Sherman family business for twelve years, and yet your so-called head of the family can’t even read a ledger.”

Ruby was shaking with fury. “Mr. Evan renews his term every year because—”

“That’s enough.” Grace raised a hand to cut her off.

“Someone, get this old hag out of here.”

I stepped in front of Ruby. “Nobody is allowed to touch her.”

Grace stared at me. The last trace of her smile was gone.

She grabbed my wrist and slammed the IOU onto the table.

“Clarisse, have I been too nice to you? You’re signing this today, one way or another.”

She forced my hand to sign the papers. Just as I wrenched back with all my strength, a furious shout came from outside the door.

“Grace, what do you think you’re doing?!”

When Grace learned that Simon had handed over the seal, she made a huge scene.Instead of smashing things around, she just sat in the room and had the fiercest fight with Simon yet.“Are you just going to accept this? Are you just going to throw away twelve years of connections?”He only replied briefly, “They were never mine.”She went completely silent when she heard that. The next day, she packed up her belongings and went back to the Truman family. Before leaving, she came to see me one last time. She stood at the entrance to the east courtyard. Her face looked far worse than it had on her wedding day.“You really don’t want those three shops back?”I shook my head. “What’s given away is yours. If you sold them too cheap, that’s on you.”She was stunned. She probably had not expected me to actually let it go.But she still had to pay back the five thousand dollars she took from the public accounts. The money Nicholas drew from the main office had to be made up, too.As f

That night, Simon came to see me alone. For once, Grace did not follow. He had no contract in his hands and no ledger. He just sat across from me and said nothing for a long time.In the end, I spoke first. “What do you want?”He stared at the family’s golden seal on the table. “What were these twelve years of mine? What did they even amount to?”I was caught off guard for a moment. “You were the head of the family business.”He laughed at himself. “The kind that gets reinstated every year?”“Yes.”“So, it wasn’t just you all humoring me?”“No.”He closed his eyes and said, “But Grandpa told me back then to go through a formality with you every year.”I thought for a moment. Then, I remembered, “He wasn’t wrong.”He looked up. “What do you mean?”“To me, it was always just a formality because for twelve years, I always picked you.”He was stunned when he heard that. I pushed the old ledger Albert had sent over toward him. Every year, on the second day of the New

I had thought Grace would settle down after being put in her place a few times. Instead, she turned around and invited the Zouch family over. That noon, I had just finished reviewing two ledgers. Lily came from the front hall with a message. “Mrs. Zouch from Lorell has arrived with her second son.”I rubbed my temples. “Who invited them?”Lily said nothing. The answer was already obvious. By the time I reached the front hall, Grace was smiling and drinking tea with Kelly Zouch. On the table lay that marriage contract. I had torn it, but it seemed she had rewritten it.“Clarisse, you’re here,” she said as she waved with a smile.“You were just throwing a tantrum the past few days. The Zouch family is showing such sincerity. You should at least meet Leo.”Kelly looked a bit awkward. Beside her, Leo Zouch stood up directly.“Ms. Sherman, may I ask, did you yourself ever agree to this proposal?”Grace’s expression shifted slightly. “Since when does a young lady get to decide her

Simon was silent for a long time. Only after the other family members had dispersed did he call me into the side hall.“Clarisse, let’s talk. Just the two of us.”I did not turn him down. Twelve years of history deserved at least a conversation. He shut the door and got straight to the point.“I misunderstood the Sherman family rules before. But replacing me out of nowhere may not be a good thing.”That carried more weight than Grace’s endless nagging. I gestured for him to continue.“I personally built the five trade caravans in the northwest. The shops in Ashford will only negotiate with me. I’ve worked with everyone from the managers to the shipowners for eight years. “You can take away my seal, but personal connections and loyalty can’t be replaced.”I nodded. “So?”He looked at me and went on. “Renew my term as usual this year. I don’t need it to be permanent. I’ll keep Grace in line. “When you find someone who can actually take over, I’ll leave.”It was not a threa

Grace was the first to react.“What’s there to go over? Simon has been running things for years. When has he ever screwed up?”I nodded. “That’s exactly why we’re going to give him credit where it’s due. After that, we’re going to go through the accounts from the past few days.”Simon looked up at me. “Clarisse, I know I didn’t do anything wrong.”“Good for you.”I had Albert open last year’s general ledger.I had to admit that Simon truly had not tampered with them. Last year, the Sherman family’s net profit rose fifteen percent over the year before. He had also reopened the northwestern trade route. Several bad debts were handled beautifully. Even a few family members nodded in approval after reading them. After I was done with the first ledger, I said, “Simon has done right by this family. By precedent, his management bonus and year-end reward will be paid in full.”Grace took the opportunity to say, “You hear that? The Sherman family earns this much all because of Simon

  • Your Castle, My Keys   Chapter 5

“We’re skipping this year’s formality.”The main hall fell silent at once.Simon held his breath and stared at me.When he finally caught on, he frowned. “Clarisse, don’t let a personal grudge get in the way of business.”Grace stood up and chimed in, “Tsk, I simply said a few things about your spending the other day. Is that really worth dragging the other family members into?“Simon has worked really hard for the Sherman family for twelve years. You can’t just dismiss him and expect everyone below to fall in line.”She was not wrong. Simon did not hold the position purely because he was part of the family. He had truly proven how capable he was over the past twelve years.Winston did not rush to speak for me. He simply looked at Simon and asked, “Did you really think the family seal is just for show?”Simon said in a serious tone, “At least over the years, the Sherman family business has never made any extra money because of that seal.”Winston nodded. “Okay, let’s put it t
