CATHERINE

The drive to Ohio was tense to say the least.

Ellie kept giving me side glances but never said a word. I knew what she was thinking. How has she never heard of our grandmother before?

The truth was that when our mom left, I went looking for her. Followed every trail, every single detail she had left behind but then I stumbled on a letter and took a bus down there. Let’s just say she wasn’t so pleased to see me. I didn’t want Ellie to face the truth of being rejected for the second time so I kept the information to myself.

But now, I didn’t have a choice. Neither did she.

I rolled in slowly into the small quiet suburban neighborhood, the kind of place where secrets spread like wildfire. Night was already slowly falling, the clouds turning shades of gray and purple. The air also got colder as I pulled into that familiar driveway. A wave of nausea rolled over me.

I clenched my teeth, forcing down the bitterness creeping up and turned to Ellie. She was asleep, head resting on t

CATHERINE “What do you mean we have to leave?” Ellie asked, her brows scrunched up in confusion. “We literally just got here and our house isn’t exactly safe thanks to your boyfriend.”I blew out a shaky breath, stepping fully into her room. “Look,” I started, eyes scanning for the closest bag. “It’s a really long story. One I’m not sure I want to talk about but I can’t stay here. We’ll go to Ohio.”Eli shot up from her bed. “Ohio?” Her voice went up an octave, then she let out an incredulous laugh. “Who do you even know in Ohio? I thought you said Mr Turners house was safe.”My pulse stuttered for half a second before I shoved down that burning feeling. I grabbed her school bag, walking up to the closet. A toothbrush, underwear, a change of clothes.“I know what I said,” I started calmly. “But the situation has changed. Now,” she frowned as I shoved the bag into her hand. “Let’s go.”She dropped it, folding her hands over her chest, glaring. “I’m not going anywhere until you tell me

CATHERINE The metal was cold in my hand, but grounded me, reminding me of what was most important to me. Family. If I couldn’t protect the only one I had left, then everything I’d endured, every sacrifice, every line I’d crossed meant nothing. I wasn’t shaking… more like numbness which surprised me. I’d always imagined that killing someone would come with panic, second guessing, probably a voice in my head screaming don’t.There was nothing like that. Only static and silence.I checked the chamber the way Marcus had once taught me, years ago, back when life wasn’t so straight forward . A bitter laugh escaped my lips at the thought. When has my life ever been straight forward? I thought by now I would be riding steadily through the social ladder, making connections of a lifetime. The irony was almost laughable.I slipped the gun into the waistband of my jeans, tugging my shirt down over it. “I won’t be quiet anymore,” I whispered to myself. My footsteps felt heavier than it was wit

CATHERINE“We need to talk.”The words hung between us like a thin thread, one wrong move and everything comes unraveling. Ronald’s eyes moved over my shoulder, then back at me. He opened his mouth to say something but then the other side of his car door opened. My brows furrowed.A man stepped out, hair as gray as the streams of moonlight, lines carved into his face from stress and age but his eyes were hard, sharp, assessing the area before finally landing on me.For some reason, my pulse stumbled.A slow smile stretched across his face as he rounded the car. He stretched out his hands, probably for a handshake but Ronald stepped in between us, his jaw locking and unlocking. The man chuckled, the sound almost sounding amused as he took a step back. “You’re even more stunning in person, Miss Reynolds. I can see why Ronald is smitten by you.”My confusion deepened as I shifted my gaze to Ronald, hoping for an explanation. He didn’t address the strange man that he brought, just nodded

CATHERINE The following few days were filled with an awkward silence. Ronald had made sure Ellie was settled into her own room, Ellie still wasn’t talking to me, I refused to stay in the same room as Ronald. I couldn’t. And Stacey called me, bawling her eyes out when she’d gone over my house and saw the redecorations those nice men had left behind. We had a video call for almost two hours where I convinced her that I was fine. She didn’t believe me but I managed to convince her not to tell Marcus, I had no idea where he was but it was a good thing he wasn’t around. My feet padded into the kitchen, slapping against the cold marble floor. The low hum of the refrigerator was the only thing that filled the silence but it was enough to muffle the thoughts that threatened to drag me under.I put Ellie at risk. I didn’t think I would ever forgive myself for that… she certainly won’t.I let out a deep sigh, yanking open the fridge and reaching for the first bottle of wine I could find. Didn

  • Your dad is mine   CHAPTER 58

CATHERINE I stopped breathing. My throat tightened with emotions too big, my mind was too heavy. My eyes were locked on his and I could see it, the certainty of his words and that made my heart ache more than anything.I pulled myself away from him ignoring the way my body screamed in protest, watching his face fall. “Those are just words, Ronald.”The pain in his eyes was unbearable so I looked away, staring at the rug instead. “And Ellie… I can’t let her go through all of this because I want to be with you.”I felt him go stiff, even from this distance. “What are you saying?” His voice was slipping, roughness coating every word.I swallowed, whispering slowly. “I’m saying it would be better if you stayed away.”I waited and waited, my heart pounding loudly in my chest as the words escaped me. My chest felt like a boulder was on top of it, crushing it to pieces but I dug my nails into my flesh, focusing on the sting instead.Just when I thought he wouldn’t say anything, he spoke.“N
