Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Ariel had all but become the center of attention. She had even set up several devices on-site to livestream across multiple platforms at once.

The title of her livestream was impossible to miss: [A Worker's Fight, Won! From Now On, We Only Talk Money!]

She stood at the center of a small crowd, riding high as she explained how she had "woken up the silent majority."

Kevin hovered around her like a personal manager. One moment, he straightened her collar; the next, he flashed a victory sign at the camera.

The room fell quiet for a moment when I walked in.

But the silence did not last. Almost immediately, everyone turned that same look on me: gleeful anticipation at the prospect of watching me humiliate myself.

I stepped up to the podium and cleared my throat. "Good morning, everyone."

My voice carried clearly through the microphone and filled the hall. "Regarding the recent controversy online and the concerns many of you have raised about this company's values, I want to offer, on behalf of management, a sincere and thorough self-criticism."

I bowed deeply to the room.

The applause and whistles that followed seemed endless.

In Ariel's livestream, the comment feed instantly exploded.

[Holy shit! The boss actually caved!]

[Hell yes! This is a historic moment for workers everywhere!]

[She's a badass! You changed the rules!]

In the crowd, Kevin clapped enthusiastically and grinned from ear to ear. He shot me a look that said this was long overdue.

I straightened and continued, "After serious reflection, we've come to understand that our previous management style was vague and overly reliant on sentiment. It lacked clarity and left far too much room for misunderstanding.

"That runs counter to what we are at our core: a business that pursues efficiency and clearly defined returns.

"So, in direct response to the calls from so many of you for measurable, quantified value..."

I deliberately let the pause stretch.

Everyone in the room held their breath and leaned in slightly.

Ariel kept her camera trained on me, ready to capture what she believed would be a historic moment.

I swept my gaze across the room and announced my decision. "Effective immediately, every flexible benefit policy that cannot be measured will be abolished."

"Yes!"

The cheers nearly brought the roof down.

"And to ensure that every resource this company has is devoted to achieving maximum efficiency..."

I paused again.

"Starting next Monday, the company will fully implement standardized KPI evaluations and a mandatory overtime schedule. Everyone will work from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., six days a week.

"Base pay for every position will be cut by 30%. The remaining compensation will be tied strictly to performance. At the end of each quarter, the lowest performers will be let go."

The faces that had been celebrating only seconds earlier instantly went rigid. Fear and unease filled the eyes of the employees who had been counting on a guaranteed base salary while comfortably coasting with minimal effort.

The phone I had placed on the podium to control the projector suddenly lit up.

An urgent email appeared in real time on the giant screen behind me. Every word carried a chilling weight.

[Sender: Starlight Capital, Hugh Lawrence]

Hugh was the most prestigious venture capitalist in the industry and the single most important potential investor in our Series B round.

[Mr. Spencer, I've seen what's circulating online.

We can't accept backing a company with such an unstable culture, where employees show no sense of contractual integrity or professionalism.

My top analyst, Russell Sutherland, will be joining your company as a Special Advisor starting next Monday.

He will conduct the final evaluation of your team.

Whether this funding round goes through depends entirely on the results of that evaluation. Prove to me that your team is worth my money.]

Hugh's email plunged the conference hall into dead silence.

Everyone understood exactly what it would mean if the team failed that evaluation.

At that moment, fear gripped the entire room.

They looked like prisoners awaiting a verdict. After a month of this ordeal, none of them had any room left for false hope.I walked up to the podium and surveyed the dull, worn-down faces before me."Everyone, thank you for everything you've endured."That first line alone stopped them cold."Over the past month, this company has undergone an unprecedented reform. It was painful. It was harsh. But it also taught every one of us something."Neither comfort nor dignity comes for free. They have to be earned through loyalty, responsibility, and genuine value."The room remained silent, but something in their eyes began to shift."Now, I'm announcing that, as of today, the company is abolishing the mandatory overtime schedule and the last-place elimination policy."The announcement hit the crowd like a bombshell. No one could believe what they had just heard. Joy and confusion swept across every face in the room.I raised a hand for silence. "But we're not going back to the old d

When the news came through, a brief, subdued cheer rippled across the office. But it did not last. Everyone quickly returned to the same tense focus as before. They all knew this was only a momentary reprieve. The next quarter's KPI evaluation was already looming.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window in my office and gazed out over the city.Russell walked in and handed me a report. "This is Starlight Capital's letter of intent. Mr. Lawrence is very pleased with how you handled the crisis."I froze. "The evaluation... hasn't it not even started yet?"Russell leaned against the edge of the desk with a knowing smile. "The evaluation started the moment I walked through this company's front door. Or you could say it started the moment you saw that post online and decided to fight back."I stared at him, completely lost. "What do you mean?"Russell explained, "What Mr. Lawrence values most isn't how good a company's numbers look. It's the character, vision, and ability of the

The shadow of last-place elimination hung over everyone in the building like the sword of Damocles. To avoid being the one cut, everyone worked as if their lives depended on it.The office lights stayed on all night, every night. No one dared complain anymore. No one dared mention benefits or humane management, not even once. The only thought left in anyone's mind was survival. The bid project ended up in Heather's hands.I called her into my office. She stood before me with her head lowered, like a child who knew she had done something wrong."Mr. Spencer, I'm sorry." She apologized for the reply she had posted under the viral post. "At the time... I just thought what she said made sense. I didn't mean any harm by it..."I looked at the young woman I had once believed in so deeply."Heather, do you know why I was willing to lend you that money personally, in my own name?" I asked. She shook her head."Because I saw sincerity in you. And potential. I believed you were someone

A single idea took root in Ariel's mind and grew fast and reckless. While Heather stepped away to get some water, Ariel quickly snapped a photo of the model's code with her phone. She knew it was theft. She knew it was shameful. But under the weight of everything crushing her and her sheer refusal to lose, she stopped letting herself care. She needed this chance. She had to win.Using Heather's code as a foundation, Ariel pulled two all-nighters in a row and finally put together a flawless proposal. In the final minutes before the deadline, she sent everything she had poured into it to Russell's inbox.…The next day, the results were announced.Ariel's proposal took first place by a decisive margin. When Russell announced the results at the meeting, every eye in the room turned to Ariel, filled with equal parts shock and envy.Ariel's vanity finally got the satisfaction it had been starving for. She straightened her back and drank in the glory she had not felt in far too lon

Russel said, "For this bid, we'll be holding an internal competition. Everyone can submit a proposal. We'll choose the strongest one to represent the company at the pitch. The winner will receive a personal commission equal to 5% of the project's total profit."That single line was enough to jolt the lifeless design department awake. After all, 5% of the profit from a project this size would be an astronomical sum.Ambition flared to life in every pair of eyes around the room.Even Ariel unconsciously tightened her grip on her stylus. This was her only chance to prove herself. If she could land this project, she might be able to reclaim every ounce of dignity she had lost. But Russell's next words doused that hope with ice water. "However, to ensure efficiency, every designer who enters the competition must first complete all of their regular assigned work. Anyone who fails to meet their KPI will not be eligible to participate."The rule might as well have been written specificall

No one stepped forward to comfort Ariel.A thread of resentment had begun to creep into the way people looked at her. After all, Ariel was the one who had dragged them out of heaven and plunged them into hell.…That evening, I received Russell's first weekly work report.According to the report, efficiency had risen by 30% compared to the same period last month. But the average workday had also jumped from eight hours to ten.At the bottom of the report, Russell had added a note.[Phase one of the stress test complete. Team morale is approaching a breaking point. Some employees are already showing signs of wanting to quit.]I replied with two words.[Keep going.]I wanted them to feel it clearly and painfully. I wanted them to understand exactly what they had thrown away.…Over the weekend, the company group chat fell completely silent. No one shared cute photos of their pets anymore. No one made plans to grab a meal together. Then Heather, the programmer I had once helpe
