My company let employees clock paid hours while petting the office cats, take unlimited vacation, and skip the time clock altogether. For a while, people called us a dream company. Then one of my employees posted online and accused the whole thing of being a kindness trap. He filmed the office as if it were paradise, but the caption told a different story: [Don't envy us. All of this was bought with our low pay and our youth.] The post went viral, and overnight, I became the fake-nice boss who bled his employees dry behind a mask of small kindnesses. The entire internet told my employees to run. Fine. I let them. I rolled out a new policy. Effective immediately, every flexible benefit and every trace of humane management was gone. The company entered an era of standardized management. From then on, KPIs would have the final word. The cats were banned from the office. Leave requests required layer after layer of approval. Strict KPIs meant a single bad number could cost employees part of their pay. Before long, the same employees who had torn me apart online showed up at my door and begged me to give them the dream company back.

Chapter 1

On Friday afternoon, the company held its usual happy hour in the break room.

I announced that the quarter's projects had gone well and that, in addition to the standard quarterly bonus, everyone would receive an extra bonus.

A wave of cheerful chatter swept through the lounge.

I clapped my hands and added with a smile, "Also, the pet snack station needs restocking. Admin will check with everyone about your cats' preferences. If anyone needs to take extended leave, please let us know soon so we can coordinate workloads."

I had built this design company from the ground up. It was not large, but I took great pride in its culture.

Pets were welcome in the office, and paid leave was unlimited.

In my view, creativity came from freedom and passion, not constraints. Give employees enough dignity and respect, and they would repay it with genuine value.

Then, amid the laughter, a sharp voice cut through the room. "Mr. Spencer, is there any point in saying all this?"

It was Ariel Tidwell, the company's star designer.

She set down her coffee cup, her eyes full of open mockery. "Aren't these nice-sounding perks just there to make us feel better about accepting below-market pay?

"Unlimited vacation? With projects piling up, who actually dares to take it? Isn't it just an empty promise?"

The room fell silent at once.

I looked at her and kept my tone as even as I could. "Ariel, if you have concerns about your pay, we can discuss them privately. This company has never been stingy about paying capable employees what they're worth.

"These benefits are meant to give everyone a more comfortable work environment. They're separate from compensation."

Ariel cut me off with a cold laugh. "Don't bother with the private talk. I already know your whole script by heart. You're the boss. You're always right."

I didn't want the scene to get any uglier. "If you think this place isn't big enough for someone like you, feel free to see what else is out there. That's it for today's happy hour."

With that, I turned and walked away.

Plenty of coworkers, eager to hear more about their bonuses, crowded around Admin to confirm the details. None of them could hide their smiles.

That gave me some comfort.

But it was not long before someone knocked on my office door.

It was

Ariel. She walked straight in and swung the door shut behind her. "Mr. Spencer, I want you to cancel all those hollow, feel-good benefits and put the money where it actually belongs: in our paychecks."

A short, humorless laugh escaped me. "And why should I do things your way?"

"So everyone's hard work finally gets what it's worth!" she said, as if she were championing everyone else's cause. "Stop numbing us with these petty little favors!"

My expression darkened. "I have no right to stop you from chasing a higher salary. But you don't have the right to take away the benefits and comforts everyone else here enjoys. Get out."

Ariel had not expected me to be so firm. She froze for a moment before finally leaving, her expression sullen and resentful.
