NINA MEYERS I did not know what I was thinking when I agreed to work for Zesa. I guess I thought she wouldn’t do what her eyes said because of my condition. I was wrong. Very wrong. I might have seen her as a woman with a kind heart who wouldn’t treat a pregnant woman harshly, but the few days I’d spent in their home told me otherwise. I’d only learned that she had two sides. She could be a woman like an angel and she could be the devil. I stood in front of the washing machine in the laundry room, putting in the clothes she gave me to wash. ZESA RUSSO The following day, I carried up a tray of food for Levi. He had had nothing to eat since Marie came over and it was time for lunch. It seemed his mother’s words only chased away his appetite. I entered the room and closed the door. Levi was seated on the floor, resting his back on the bed with his head in his hands. He’d been like that since his mother left; downcast. I placed the food on the nightstand and sat beside him. “Do you want to talk about it?” I asked, pulling my legs up to my chest. He forced a smile when he caught my eyes. “I have disappointed her.” He told me, “She had never looked at me like she did today. The way she glared at me made me feel worthless; a disgrace. I understand I fell in love with the wrong woman and even got her pregnant, but am I at fault for thinking she was the one? Am I at fault for wanting to go to who my heart wanted?” Tears glistened his eyes. “I don’t know if I can ever face her again after everything. She hates me.”

ZESA RUSSO After the mini threat I got from Alejandro, the first person I went to was Finn. I couldn’t even go to see Neviah. I would call and explain things to her later. LEVI DEL CAMPA It had been five weeks since the incident, and Zesa had yet to regain consciousness. We’d been told she had become stable, and all we had to do was hope she would wake up soon. I wanted to hold her in my arms and tell her everything that had happened. Like Nina getting sentenced to twenty-one years in prison for attempted murder. I wanted to tell her how much I missed her, but I wondered if I would ever get the chance. I sat beside her bed with her hand in mine. They had removed the oxygen mask and replaced it with a nasal cannula and moved her from the Intensive care unit to the step-down unit. The step-down unit was where a patient would still be closely monitored before being transferred to a regular hospital floor and then hopefully, home. It gave us little hope. She was getting better. ZESA RUSSO I woke up to the sickly smell of hospital disinfect invading my nostrils. The room was fairly silent apart from my heavy breathing and the beeping sound from the digital monitoring machine beside me. I squinted in an attempt to sharpen the blurred images before me, glancing around the room to take in my surrounding. A bed dominated the room, somewhat lumpy with padding and white sheets that seemed to mask the thick plastic covering the mattress. There was a call button attached to the bed, a bedside table, a comfortable chair and two dining type chairs. The room was decorated in a gold and white color. It was definitely a VIP room. I shut my eyes, trying to remember what had happened to me, but no matter how much I tried to remember, only blurry images came to me. How long had I been here? Then it hit me. ZESA RUSSO The next few days went by with Alejandro stopping by to give me flowers and gifts almost every day he visited. He was a really nice guy, but no matter how much I wanted to lean toward him, Levi always caught my eye. I was curious about him and what led him to cheat on me. Plus, having him around almost every time didn’t help. Thankfully, I would be discharged the day after tomorrow, so most of the IV had been removed, but not the bandage around my head and leg cast.
