The Bernard residence sat on a quiet street in South Brentford, its garden filled with wilting marigolds and a wind chime that no longer sang.

Helena clutched a small bouquet of white roses as she stood between Greg and Tessy. None of them spoke. The weight of what they were about to do pressed heavy against their chests.

Greg rang the doorbell.

A few moments passed.

Then the door opened.

Mrs. Bernard stood there, pale, older than she looked just weeks ago. Her eyes were red, lips cracked, and her hands trembled slightly as she held onto the edge of the door.

When she saw them, she didn’t speak.

She simply stepped aside.

They entered quietly.

The living room was dim, curtains drawn, the smell of incense lingering in the air. On the mantle sat framed pictures of Theo—smiling at the beach, holding a puppy, wearing his school blazer. And beside them: a small black urn.

Helena’s voice barely held. “We’re so sorry. For everything.”

Mrs. Bernard sat slowly in the armchair across from them.
