21. With no energy left
“Did I forget my homework or something?” I said sarcastically to no one in particular, while leaning against the door, not wanting to go any closer to my new teacher.“Alice, I need to talk to you. I kno-” Annabeth started, but I raised my hand to cut her off.“Sorry, school hours are over,” I said, pretending that I was leaving.I knew if my father was involved in her being inside our house, I wasn’t going to be left alone until she said what she wanted. I just had to show them how uninterested I was in this whole ‘mommy is back’ thing.I didn’t hate her, or at least I did not hate her until she showed up like this at my class today. Many times I imagined how she would return and show up at our doorstep. We would talk on the porch, and she would tell me some giant reason why she was not able to visit me sooner. Other times, we would be walking on the beach next to our house, and she would tell me how she missed me and everything reminded her of me. I even thought she could tell me she

22. Walk on the beach
“Thomas?” I half-whispered, half-yelled in disbelief.Watching me as I came out of the front door and stepped on the porch, he moved away from the shadows under the tree and his eyes inspected me from head to toe.“You are not wearing any shoes. Is that normal for you when you are at home?” he asked instead of a greeting.“What? No, I just… today… Never mind. What are you doing here?” I stuttered, but then went straight to the point. We were talking in a low voice, slowly approaching each other until we met in the middle of the lawn. Cold, salty, fall breeze was playing with my hair and a few blonde strands on his forehead, reminding me of the ocean nearby. A chill ran through my body and I wrapped my arms around me. Some leaves were rolling on the always perfectly-cut green grass, touching the skin on my feet while passing me by.“I thought you might need someone to talk to about this shit today.” He said truthfully.“You came to my place at this hour because you thought I needed som

23. Father said so!
He leaned over me, his left hand still on my right cheek, keeping my hair from coming onto my face. He licked his lips before asking his question, and my attention shifted from his penetrating eyes to his tempting mouth.“How come you don’t know how amazing, breathtaking and irresistible you look when you close your eyes like that?” he breathed out, leaving me at a loss of words. “You seem at peace with yourself and a barely visible smile dances on your lips.”“Is that how I look?” I asked, amazed by his observation skills. “I guess no one ever told me.”“No one told you how attractive you are?” He furrowed his eyebrows, ending his spell over me.I gently placed my palms on his chest to move him and pushed myself up to sit.“Yeah, no one ever said such things to me.” I said, playing with my zipper, offended by his question when I really had to consider, he said those words to me.“You never had a boyfriend before?” He asked, his mouth open in disbelief. This was humiliating. What if I

24. Trust me
It was two PM on Saturday, the party day. Linda had hired people to take care of the decorations, and was doing most stuff that needed only a mobile. She was confirming orders, sending invitations, and pointing her fingers to her ‘slaves’ to make sure things would be according to her taste, which was strange because the theme of the party wasn’t her specialty at all.Steven decided we should have a themed party Group game. We had no other choice, but to eventually agree, because he did not say ‘yes’ to any of our ideas. I laughed a few times while seeing Tina and Steven arguing on things like, “what games will there be?”, “or should we dress up as game characters?”. This wasn’t my step-sister’s scene at all, and Steven had no idea how to organize a party.Luckily, I had only one task--to take care of the food. Part of me was wondering if they thought they couldn’t trust me with anything, or if they had decided preparation of food and drinks were enough to take my whole time. Whatever i

25. Don't look so scared
When I got inside, I instantly knew he had a reason to bring me here. The heavenly smell of baked goods filled my nostrils. My eyes started wandering behind the glass, where on shelves were mouthwatering party snacks. There were muffins with perfect small copies of actors and kid’s favorite characters. Colorful biscuits in the forms of dolls, fairies, weapons, creatures, flowers, castles, and everything you could think of picked my brain, while I was guessing from where I knew them.At least ten cakes with different themes were stealing my attention from the other side of the bakery. Some didn’t look like a cake at all, taking the form of a wild lake, a person’s face, a fortress, a flower, and one was like a real man and woman, twisting their naked bodies in a passionate embrace. As heat creeped up on my cheeks, I reverted my eyes to Thomas, only to catch him staring at me with amusement, so I turned my gaze to my feet instead. This place was amazing, and I admired the creator of all t

26. She should join us
Thomas came to stand next to me, and I instantly felt better.“She has her taste, you have yours. Did she break your player because she preferred other songs? No! Those brainless fucks did it!” my defender challenged.I swallowed, glancing from Thomas to Steven, wondering if another fight was going to take place here. A fight over my choice of music? Again? A situation resembling the gas station problem.“Anyway, we are not listening to this. Do you have a better idea?” My step-brother asked, annoyed, coming closer to Thomas with a macho walk.“I do! Let’s give everybody a choice to play their favorite song… by themselves. Let’s do karaoke, guys!” The famous boy yelled, cheers and whistles following. “I have all we need in my car.”“Karaoke?! This is not okay with our game theme.” Steven argued.“It’s a great idea!” Tina finally got involved. “Plus, we don’t have other options and our guests seem to love this.”“Do as you wish! This party was a bad idea from the start,” the boy-twin

27. Ready, set… please don't go
I slammed the door shut behind me. He sat on the corner of my bed, looking around and then at me, while I was walking back and forth. My mind was racing, I could barely find words to tell him what had happened with the card game. I transferred some of my anger to him while speaking, but he was holding it together for me, only cursing under his breath while I was explaining it all.Thomas tapped the place next to him for me to sit, and I stared at him. I was feeling better, but sitting felt unnatural to me right now. I wanted to break something or run outside. Maybe the cool water of the ocean could calm me.“Come on,” he invited me next to him again. “Let me help, okay?”I let out an exasperated breath, but went to sit where he wanted. Surprisingly, his arm snaked around my back, pulling me towards him for a hug. I felt a fountain of emotions was boiling inside me, and something in me broke. I leaned in his embrace, swallowing back some tears before they could show my weakness. We sat

28. Start with the obvious
In the next few days, I was happy to work on the painting project instead of going to places with other people. Even if I was just sketching something, it was like a therapy. I needed to calm down from all recent events and just be myself. It was nice to know Thomas was near, in the same school or even in some of my classes. We casually talked a few times about music and school. Linda was missing the first half of the week, healing from the nasty flu.Tina was very happy to use me as her doll, dressing me up every morning. We went shopping again and bought a ton of clothes. She finally got the chance to change my hair, including a new long haircut, and… she dyed it red with some shampoo. Well, the woman in the beauty salon did it, but Tina made the decision. The good news was, it was going to wash away in a few days. She was excited for the weekend, and I wondered how the hell I was supposed to ask Emma--Steven’s girlfriend if she was interested in girls. It was the last day of school

29. Do you really want to do this?
I didn’t know how often my parents talked to each other, neither when nor where. It was beyond strange for me, how they had the same opinion about my camping thing and seemed to have planned things about my life, without me knowing it. I felt sick to my stomach from the thought that they have been connected like this whole time, all of those years… and I was left to think, I have a mother who doesn’t care about me. Were they really talking about me all this time?! Maybe I had a father with too much power and secrets. Whatever it was, I was feeling left behind, and they were conspiring behind my back.I was mostly silent while we drove towards Emma’s house. I just had to push all my thoughts out from my mouth, before we reached the peaceful nature where everyone could hear me yelling. Tina and Linda were just looking at their mobiles after I started the car, followed by my mom’s and then Thomas’. I guess it was easier for them to not speak of the awkward situation we found ourselves i

30. His secret
Thomas took a few steps away from the lake and plopped down under an old tree, his mind concentrated on a distant memory. I followed him and sat down near him, crossing my legs under me on the dirt ground."I went to watch ice hockey with my band. We were in a happy place, you know. Our song was played multiple times on the radio, and we had an amazing few days. So, we just went to celebrate with a game. It was something none of us ever did. We thought it might inspire us to write a new hit." Thomas smiled bitterly looking at his feet. "We were so wrong. It turned into a disaster.""What happened?" I questioned, dipping into his story."We were drinking. Mostly beer, but Adam--the guy who used to be in our band, he had family troubles that day, so he brought a whiskey his father was keeping for a special occasion. We watched the game, while he was getting drunk. Our team lost. We hung around at the exit of the building and one of the guys who played was just going to his car after chan
