FIFTY - ONE

It had been in the afternoon, before they were both set and ready to go get her car. They had spent the day either talking while cuddled up, or watching some show together – Christopher trying to introduce some shows to Starr, and her still not being fully interested, or them simply enjoying each others company in silence.“Are you set? Do you know what you want already?” Christopher asked Starr as they were both set to leave.Starr nodded without a reply as she opened the door for them both to walk out. Christopher nodded also as they walked out, and straight to where Christopher car was packed. The ride had started quite, until Corinne Bailey Ray’s ‘Like A Star’ began to play. It was like Starr was pulled back to her childhood. Memories of her dad on Saturday mornings, flooded back. Memories of him singing along, dancing with them as he held unto wither her of Sorcha’s hand while he swirled them, their laughter echoing

It wasn’t long before the picture of Starr and Christopher holding their hands began to circulate on different platforms. It was like they were the 6alk of the town. It was as if people had been waiting for a public evidence. Various interviews had began to pop here and there, for both Starr and Christopher. Starr knew she could trust Christopher, but her jealousy wasn’t going to let her watch him talk to Female interviewers who looked like they wanted him the entire time. Of she found an interviewer who should no interest at all, she wasn’t going to follow him. But also, she didn’t want to seem too protective of him, so she also decided to not go with him. Her pride didn’t let her.About a week had passed since Starr got her car, and she had accepted an interview that wanted herself and Christopher Chariton present. She definitely wasn’t going to accept an interview that wanted her alone, she didn’t want anyone digging into her priva

Placing Starr’s hand bag between them both, Starr crossing her left leg over her right the moment she and Christopher sat down. The interviewer was a black woman that was probably in her late twenties, slim and with a smile so bright it was the lighting to the room. She was dressed in a simple cream suit and brown inner, Starr though her outfit really suited her, but didn’t bother complimenting her. The interview was what was going to determine how she was going to treat her.“Good afternoon,” the interviewer had greeted them, causing Starr to nod while Christopher had replied with a smile and a low ‘afternoon’.The director made his call, the camera rolling and then the interview began. “Hello and welcome, I am your host for today Amber Brown,” Amber had said with a smile as she turned to Starr and Christopher, adding, “And today we have with us Miss Hart and Mr. Chariton.” Amber spoke with a certain type of

It was a five-star hotel with all the service a person could ever need, golden furniture here and there. Emma had her legs crossed as she leaned into a chair, laughing at a reality show she had been watching in the hotel. Becoming desperate of not seeing both Starr and Christopher happy, she had dug deep into Starr’s life. Meeting Starr had made her desperate. It pissed her off that Starr was so confident and sure of herself. She hated her guts. Michael Adams was an unexpected news she had stumbled upon while roaming her life. Her source had told her how it is believed that she had changed and became stone cold after that particular man. To Emma, that was a pleasant news. She didn’t hesitate to try to find the man, contacting him and setting up

Starr had woken up to the smell of something frying, which was how she knew, without opening her eyes, that Christopher had let himself in again. She smiled into her pillow before she even sat up, one hand automatically going to rest on the curve of her belly, which had gotten round enough now that she'd had to retire two of her favorite skirts to the back of her closet."I can hear you thinking from here," Christopher's voice carried in from the kitchen. "Get up, love. Food's almost ready.""I am carrying your child," Starr called back, not moving an inch. "The least you can do is bring it to me."There was a pause, then the sound of the stove being turned down, then his footsteps. He appeared in the doorway in one of her aprons, which was far too small on him and rode up around his middle, a spatula still in his hand. He looked so ridiculous that Starr laughed before she could stop herself, and the sound of it seemed to please him more than anything else could

Christopher had chosen Magnus's place for a reason. If he wanted honesty, brutal and immediate, Magnus was the only person he knew who could deliver it without so much as blinking, and Christopher needed exactly that kind of honesty right now, sitting on Magnus's couch with a small velvet box balanced on his knee like it might detonate."Okay," Magnus said, dropping onto the couch across from him with two mugs of coffee, sliding one toward Christopher without asking if he wanted it. "Show me."Christopher opened the box slowly, almost reverently, and turned it so Magnus could see the ring properly, a single clean stone set low so it wouldn't catch on anything, the band thin enough that it wouldn't feel foreign on her hand. He'd spent three weeks choosing it. He'd changed his mind eleven times.Magnus went quiet for a long moment, which was, in itself, more alarming to Christopher than any amount of shouting could have been."Say something.""I'm cr

Starr had been curled up on her couch with a bowl of sliced mango balanced on the shelf of her belly, halfway through an episode of something she wasn't really watching, when Christopher let himself in without knocking, the way he'd started doing months ago and she'd stopped minding just as long ago."You're early," she said, not looking up. "Weren't you at Magnus's?""I was." He came around the couch and sat beside her, closer than usual, close enough that she finally looked over at him, taking in the tightness around his eyes, the way his jaw was set like he was holding something behind his teeth. She knew that look. She'd learned it the way she'd learned most things about him lately, slowly, without meaning to."What's wrong?""Nothing," he said, too fast, and reached over to steal a piece of mango off her spoon like that would distract her.Starr set the bowl down on the side table and turned fully toward him, one hand coming to rest on his kne

Christopher hadn't slept, not really, not in any way that counted. He'd drifted in and out through the night with Starr curled against him, her breathing slow and even, and every time his eyes had closed, he'd seen Emma's smile again, heard her voice saying someone from her past like she was handing him a gift she knew would rot the moment he touched it.By the time morning light came through the curtains, he'd already decided what he needed to do.He slipped out of bed carefully, careful not to jostle her, and made his way to the kitchen where he could talk without waking her. Valentine picked up on the second ring, his voice thick with sleep. "It is far too early for this.""I need a favor."Something in Christopher's tone must have carried, because Valentine's voice sharpened immediately, all traces of sleep gone. "What's wrong?""I want someone watching Starr's building. Discreetly. I don't want her knowing, I don't want to frighten her, especially not now, but after last night I'

The eatery was quiet in the middle of a weekday afternoon, chairs still up on some of the tables, the woman who ran it moving between them with a cloth in hand, humming something under her breath that Christopher didn't recognize but liked anyway. She looked up when the bell over the door rang, her face breaking into recognition."Mr. Chariton," she said warmly. "Back again so soon.""I wanted to make sure everything was settled for Saturday." Christopher glanced around the room, picturing it the way he wanted it to look, candles instead of the overhead lights, the wooden tables cleared of everything but the one where they'd sit. "You're certain you don't mind closing early?""For a proposal like this one?" The woman set her cloth down, pressing a hand to her chest. "I would close the whole week if you asked me to. You want to bring a woman back to the place that reminds her of her father, and ask her to spend her life with you in it. That is not something I wou

Dr. Adam's office smelled the same as it had every visit, faint antiseptic under something warmer, lavender maybe, and Starr had gotten so used to the routine of it that she barely flinched anymore at the cold gel against her belly, or at Christopher's hand finding hers the second the technology started humming to life."Alright," Adam said, moving the wand slowly, eyes on the screen rather than either of them, which Starr had learned meant he was concentrating rather than worried. "Heart rate looks perfect. Strong. Everything measuring exactly where it should be." He glanced up, that familiar teasing warmth back in his face. "You've been eating properly? No more skipping dinner because you got too absorbed in spreadsheets?""One time," Starr said. "That happened one time, months ago, and you have never once let me forget it.""I intend to bring it up at every appointment until this child is in college," Adam said cheerfully, and Christopher laughed, the sound easy and warm in the sma
