The night ended without any other incidents. Acheki got in his car. Akaisha watched as he put it in gear. “Will you be fine?”“Yeah, of course. I can pop home without any problems.”“Still be careful.”She waved him off. “You’re the one that needs to be careful.”“I’m the law. I’ll be fine.”“You know, they say a hard head makes for a soft ass, right?”He chuckled. “Yeah, I heard. But I have my weapon with me. And I’m not the hard-headed one, Ms. Morningstar.”She shrugged her shoulders. “Just go home. The sooner you leave, the faster I can go.”He waved his hand, pulling out of the parking lot. When he turned left, she teleported to her new home. Blue and Misty greeted her. “Are you going to get my bed? It be really nice to sleep on my soft bed.”Akaisha shook her head, not in disp

Not All News is Good News
After Dave showed her a fraction of his altered appearance. Akaisha couldn’t believe that he was a failed experiment. It made sense if she remembered everything taught to her about lycanthropes. Their metabolism is impossibly fast. They formulated a special-grade medication for them because of the way their body metabolizes anesthesia. If I had worked within Dave, he would have been extremely powerful. Not as powerful as an alpha would be, but pretty close. It also made sense why he seemed to run hotter than other people. It was a lot to tell her. It was even risky to ask her for help. The thought came to mind that it was a ploy. Dave could be attempting to lure her into a trap. She hoped that wasn’t the case, but anyone tied to the professor could very well be just as bad as him. Which was evident by his junior. The one she had never met but knew about. He seemed to be a successful experiment, too. She looked around the disorganized room. It smelled of stale air. Mahima’s dressing ro

There was no guarantee that Amethyst could take care of herself. The world may not have been on the brink of disaster, but everyone needs to know how to defend themselves. Akaisha cradled the envelope to her chest once she took it. amethyst smiled at her. “Should we head down now?”“Oh, I don’t have to organize Mahima’s dressing room?”“You could, but it would be better for you to get to know Mitchum first. She can give you directions to where to meet the professor.”She didn’t want to go there to meet the professor, but she did want to meet her new boss. “Sure. That’s fine with me. But who will tell Mahima that she’s getting a new assistant? Hell, who is her new assistant will be?”Amethyst shrugged her shoulders. “Not sure. They are waiting for her to come back to hire a new assistant. And I haven’t heard of any of them getting in touch with her yet. A doctor called when they said she would be staying longer.”Her eyebrows raised. “What did the doctor say?”She shrugged. “That Mahim

She looked around to see her new coworkers scanning their work. Handheld computers were a thing of the past. Holographic screens and the mind took their place. With her empty desk, there was nothing for her to do but settle in. Being a former assistant, Akaisha didn’t have much to bring down with her. Someone came up to her as she stood near the desk. It was an elf. Compared to Acheki, they were smaller and thicker. The Elven race had their differences, just as humans did. The man spoke to her. “Ms. Akaisha?”“That’s me. And you are?”He bowed in greeting to her. “I’m Ralev. I’ll be your assistant.”Ralev had something about him that didn’t seem pure elf. It would be rude to ask about his background. Instead of digging into his background, she asked what was important. “Right, I did get an assistant. So, have you scheduled the time with Professor Mozart?”He nodded

Time to celebrate!
Akaisha had gone back to the third floor. Everyone bustled around, getting the segment together for the afternoon news. Dave stood next to James using the makeup pen. James was going over some papers. Amethyst wasn’t near them. She wasn’t anywhere to be found. She looked around once more before going to Mahima’s dressing room. She didn’t have to organize it. She could’ve gotten herself familiar with the layout of digital press, but it didn’t appear Ralev would show her around and the others seemed unwelcoming. It felt suffocating down there.Amethyst came up to her. The two of them stood outside the dressing room. “Back so soon? Figured you’d love your new place and never come baxk.”“Heh, yeah. My assistant is something. Didn’t give me a tour.”She frowned. “Who is it?”“An elf named Ralev.”Her frown deepened. “Oh. He’s an oddball. I’ve heard things about him. Not all good things, but he is a knowledgeable man.”“He didn’t give me that impression. I sensed he was a prick.” Akaisha g

Surprisingly, when she had gotten back to digital press, Ralev had been searching for her. His exasperated features didn’t make him look any better. He came across as the same hardass just several minutes prior. As soon as he spotted her, Ralev rushed towards her. Grabbing her hands. “There you are! Where did you go? There’s a meeting in progress.”Akaisha pulled her hand from his grasp. “Really? That’s news to me.”“Yes, well, it’s my fault and Mitchum will have my ears if I don’t bring you there.”She stepped back away from him. “Sounds like what I’m hearing is that if you don’t get me to the meeting, you will be in trouble. And the only reason why you want me to go there is so you don’t get your ass chewed out. Am I right?”“Yes! Mitchum is scary when she’s angry.”Mitchum didn’t come across as a scary person, but first impress

Akaisha let him leave. His slightly changed attitude was an improvement, but not where it should be. Even if Mahima annoyed her to no end, she would never be rude to her. Except for that one time while she was in the hospital, but that was different. They weren’t boss and employee. Even then, she still went to see her in the hospital when that presumed call came in. Mahima is a terrible person but everyone, once in a while Akaisha, would give her a piece of her mind, respectfully. She went down to the lobby where Dave and Amethyst were waiting for her. The three of them headed over to the ice cream parlor. Children lined up outside the door, waiting for their turn. They got in line to wait. It moved slowly. Dave asked the two ladies what they wanted. “What flavor ice cream are you going for?”Amethyst pondered for a moment. “I’m torn. I either want plain vanilla or cookies and Kahlua.”“That’s good. Vanilla is plai

Unexpected Mishaps
While Akaisha slept in his cruiser, Jalefel waited with Dave, and Amethyst until her cab arrived. The two men chatted while they waited. It was an awkward conversation. “So, how’d that case turn out?”“Which? I work a lot of cases.”“The one at the restaurant with Akaisha and myself. And the meta humans.”Jalefel nodded his head in remembrance. “Right, the case that started it all.” He thought about the way Dave spoke of Akaisha. He could understand why he felt so strongly about her. “The perps are in jail and Akaisha is free. There’s not much else to tell about it.”He went quiet. Dave tried to ask another question. “Are all your cases like that?”“Not all of them. Sometimes there are murder cases. My unit works a case anytime there’s a meta human involved.”“What about lycanthropes?”Jalefel stared at him, inspecting Dave. “Sometimes, but most of them have their own laws and deal with the fallout within their pack. The same with elves. Only when it involves normal humans do we get i

She was angry. Her whole life junior refused to acknowledge her existence, but the moment she actively used her abilities and became comfortable having them, he wanted to come out. He wanted to take them from her. Akaisha looked into Jalefel’s beautiful hues. “I need to rescue them.”He stammered. “H-how are you planning on doing that? This is a matter for the police. For my unit.”“No, I can't let you or your team search for him. You don’t know what he’s capable of.”“Neither do you. This isn’t something you should do alone.”She gave him a weary smile. “I won’t be alone. Did you forget, I have my trusty pit bull, Blue, and genetically modified creature, Misty?”He sighed. “You can’t go to wherever he is with those animals. Blue is registered as an endangered breed. If something were to happen to her and you survive, you could go to jail for animal endangerment. Do you want that? And what about Misty? Did it ever occur to you that Junior could capture him? He could be working with hi

She knew that. She knew he wouldn’t let her be. She would never be free of him or his sociopathic son. “You haven’t bothered me since I ran away. Why do you care what I do now? Just tell me where Junior is?”“Will you kill him?”“Why does it matter? It’s not like you ever paid any attention to him.”“That’s where you’re wrong. Junior is my son. He is my mini me. Another version of myself. I wouldn’t dare give his whereabouts to someone that wanted to kill him.”She didn’t know what else to do or say to him. In his twisted way, he was trying to be a good father, despite the fact that one of those people that Junior took was Dave. “And will you forsake two of your children for one?”He tilted his head. “What do you mean?”“Junior abducted Dave. He wants my life and Dave’s abilities in exchange for having my coworker rel
