Chapter 1 - Late Again
Cora's POV "Hmmm, these pancakes smell incredible. I hope they taste the same," Cecilia sighed with her eyes closed. I don't know about that but having a bite won't be bad. I responded and placed two pancakes on a plate, setting them before her. "I need some too." That's my mum, joining Cecilia on the next stool beside the kitchen island. I decided to fry some more pancakes, so I could keep the leftovers in the fridge for Cecilia. "Am sorry mum, the doctor says you must eat more fruits and veggies so I made you salad but don't worry, I added avocados too", I coaxed my mum. She has a sweet tongue but I won't allow it, knowing it would end up affecting her health. " Thank you, Cora, you know how to make an old woman happy," she replied. Glad I convinced her. "I keep telling you that you are not old. If Dad hadn't run off with some-" The words were stuck in my throat as tears formed in the corners of my eyes. "It's okay de

Chapter 2 - Darkness
"Not so fast, Cora? You are late again." I heard his angry husky voice behind me and turned to face him. "Am very sorry Ken, it won't happen again." Truly, I wasn't planning on being late again and I never thought I would be late today but how do I explain to him that I dozed off in the library and overslept? "It's the same thing you said yesterday and the day before," Ken said in a stern but low voice, not wanting to attract unnecessary attention. "Please, this time, it's for real". I said, hoping I sounded as convincing as I was, and turned to go change. "Where do you think you are going? 'To get changed?" I said to him, thinking about how dumb a question he was asking me when he knew I couldn't work in trousers and a T-shirt. "Good, wear these," he let out, throwing a small bag in my direction, which I caught mid-air. I looked into the bag and gaped at the content. A short, simple black dress with high heels. Am a stripper, and not

Chapter 3 - He is gone
After recovering from the shock of his voice, I mastered the courage to speak. If I was going to die, I should at least be brave and not die without a fight. "It's extremely dark and I can't see a thing." I imagined my voice to be brave but it came out as a shriek. "Uhhh, sorry, I forgot you were human." His voice suddenly became gentle but quickly changed to a cold one. "Walk straight forward. Am watching you." "What? How can you see me in such a dark room?" Now, I was sure he was some serial killer. "Just do as you have been paid to. You don't ask the questions." With that, I began moving my legs, one after the other, straight ahead as the mysterious man slash serial killer had commanded. After what took like ages and luckily not bumping into anything, I made her way through the room. "Stop." I stopped in my tracks at the sound of the voice. "Turn around." I obeyed and turned around. "Sit." I bent my buttocks to sit and luckily, it t

Chapter 4 - Found her
Brayden's POV Jlp I didn't intend to go all the way with her but I don't know why I couldn't control myself. Unlike other women, I was never disgusted by her. The closer I got, the more I wanted to go. She gave no disapproval. Maybe she was scared. When I requested an escort, I only needed someone around. I didn't mention prostitutes but I still paid the same amount.  I did it because I couldn't touch all the girls the club ever sent. They disgusted me. They were more of escorts. They came to the darkroom and I watched them from the next bedroom. Of course, I could see clearly in the dark. My eyes were more powerful than human eyes. They reclined there and I scanned them as they slept. I couldn't trust them when I told them not to switch on the light so they languished on the bed till they got exhausted and slept. The next morning. They wake up and leave without seeing me. But there was something about this girl. I don't know anything about her e

Chapter 5 - The boss wants to see you
Cora's POV We were met with complete silence when we arrived at the outskirts of the club. No one could be seen outside. It seemed that even the security team was part of this meeting. I alighted from the car and started walking towards the conference room of the inn with the Driver tailing behind me. The atmosphere was cordial when we got there but there was a mixture of tension and extreme confusion on the faces of the workers. I never knew the club and Inn had this much number of workers. Maybe because I only worked at night, I didn't know most of the day workers, and even the night workers, were oblivious to me. I stood behind Greta. The meeting had not yet started and from the look of it, the owner, as claimed by the driver, had not yet arrived but Ken had just come out in the front. He held his Ipad and kept calling out names. I think he wanted to make sure that everyone was around. Soon, I heard my name and waved, while deciding to get some info from Greta

Chapter 6 - Will I lose my job?
Cora's POV The smile on my face dissipated, the moment I heard what he said. "Am I in trouble?" I was struck with immense panic at that instance. Taking note of what happened earlier and how embarrassed I felt, I was not comfortable going to meet him, especially not today. "Why don't you find out when you get there." Ken's voice was plain so I couldn't read his thoughts through it. It was just another hopeless situation. "I don't mean to be rude. But my shift is in the evening. Can't I meet him then? I mean, my mum is already dead worried about me." Even a heartless man should be moved for this reason right? Knowing where he sent me to and what I encountered, I didn't expect otherwise but Ken at this moment was unmoved. "Are you trying to disrespect the boss? Look here lady, if you want to keep your job, you better do everything he says." After his warning, he left, leaving me in disarray. I took in the now-empty conference room which was crowded a fe

Chapter 7 - It can't be
Brayden's POV It's been over a hundred years since I visited my mother's cabin but I could make out the way like the back of my palm. These are some of the things I was talking about. The acidity of my senses has increased invariably, after meeting Cora. The whole place has been deserted and covered in weeds but I could make my way through, easier than I did the last time I was here. Aside from that, Steve was extremely exhausted, but I felt my energy was just picking up after walking this long in the woods. There was no route for vehicles in this location so most of the journey had to be covered on foot. Mother told me before she died that she chose to live here because she wanted to be away from the rest of the world and atone for her sins. She never told me about what atrocity befell her even when I asked over and over again. The only thing she kept saying was I will know when the time was right, and when the time comes, the truth will reveal itself.

Chapter 8 - Ghost Mum
Brayden's POV "Mum? Is that you?" That was the only word I could utter. It felt like a dream till I saw Steve gawking too. She did not move but smiled. That smile was laced with bitterness but there didn't seem to be any form of regret, sadness, or sorrow. "It's me. But I can't stay for long. I am only awake for a few minutes each day. Today, I reserved it all for you." I didn't understand what she was saying but I had this urge to hug her like I used to. I walked towards her but she disappeared immediately I got close. "You can't touch me," She said immediately she appeared again at the same spot. "I have passed on from this world but I can only appear to you because my life was cut shot. My soul is not at peace, and the underworld has rejected me. It's not as if I didn't know it was going to happen. I knew it but I still went ahead to do that which was forbidden and this is my punishment. I have almost finished atoning for my sins, after which my so

Chapter 9 - Back to the hotel
Cora's POV As I was not used to sleeping in my bed during the day, it was great doing so today and I felt quite robust about it. The thought of last night was still wavering on my mind, no matter how much I tried to disregard it. It's not as if I want anything but I felt chemistry drawing me to him, the more I tried to forget him. It was something I had never felt. I suffered the urge to see him, for a reason I can't comprehend. I perceived going to that hotel again but what would I do there? What do I say to him? He was so mysterious that I couldn't discern what would befall me if I ever saw him again. Right now, I want to walk into that hotel and ask of him but it's a hotel and he might not be there. I just felt that if I didn't see him, I might go crazy, and if I saw him, I would run mad. Nevertheless, it won't hurt to check or maybe find out something about him. His name perhaps might give me a clue or a way of locating him. Hmmm...that receptionist might tell me
