Chapter 140
“You’re going to have to stay back, soldier.” The paramedics had told Mist at least twenty times that she had to stay back, but it hadn’t registered the first nineteen times, and it didn’t this time either. Blinded by her tears, she stood at the foot of the cot that Walt was lying on, watching the medical staff do everything they could do to stop the bleeding. It was too late. The words kept playing over and over in her head. “Damn it,” she muttered under her breath, not for the first time. Why did he have to be so stubborn? Why couldn’t he have listened to Rain? She was a medical student--a good one at that! He could’ve stayed behind after they escorted the women out. He could’ve gotten help before he fell over. He’d lost so much blood. She’d h

Chapter 141
The bullet fire in the distance seemed to be getting louder. That made Rain think she was going the right direction. It seemed like all of the action was going on in the center of the building, and that’s where she was headed now.The Bridge. Finding it was going to be difficult because she had never been there before. She had the idea, though, that she needed to go to the medical ward, though. While she’d never seen any indication that The Bridge was located near the incubators where the fetuses were kept, it just made sense that it would be there because the majority of people transported over to the other side, whatever the hell that happened to be, were the fetuses. As Rain hurried down the hallways, headed back to the medical ward where she’d been earlier that day, she had to wonder why they would even bother to take the fetuses over The

Chapter 142
“Where are you taking me?” Adam couldn’t help but ask the question as the Mother dragged him along the hallways, a gun to his head. It was awfully convenient for her that all of the fighting was going on in other parts of the building so that the Quebecian troops were all pulled away from where she was forcing him to march in front of her.“Shut your mouth, 24C, and walk,” she said.“Or what? You’re going to shoot me? I find that unlikely.” The nozzle of the gun was practically buried in his brain stem, she had it shoved up so hard against him, her other arm wrapped around his midsection. She was strong, but he knew he could overpower her. It was just a matter of how fast she could pull that trigger.Something told hi

Chapter 143
The glow coming from the gap where the door was open was soothing in a way Rain couldn’t quite grasp. Something about the soft light coming from beneath and around the door made her feel safe. It made her feel warm. She still didn’t want to open the door, though.Rain took a deep breath and put her hand on the door, knowing she had no other choice but to go inside. She needed to see who it was that had summoned her here; she needed to know what the other person wanted. The door was about a foot open already. It took no effort whatsoever to push it the rest of the way.The light was bright when she walked in, but not so bright that she had to squint. She was shocked that The Bridge was actually a bridge and not just some sort of slaughterhouse, or a room with

Chapter 144
The words that slipped from between Mother White’s lips were no surprise to Rain. She’d already surmised what the woman was going to tell her before she’d gotten the statement out.But that didn’t make it any easier to accept. She didn’t want the Military Mother to see her cry. She had to keep the tears that were blinding her from falling. Rather than insist that Mother White was lying when Rain knew she wasn’t, she asked, “How do you know that?”“I know,” White said, her face exuding confidence. “And if your friend had managed to get out with that stupid external hard drive, you’d be able to look for yourself--assuming you would have gotten out of here alive in this alternate reality.&rd

Chapter 145
Rain didn’t want to follow Mother White’s instructions. Not even a little bit. Standing there without her weapons, Rain felt completely vulnerable and unable to protect herself or Adam. It was clear that he was in a lot of pain, and the longer White continued to hold him in her firm grasp, the more uncomfortable it would be.She had no choice but to follow the woman’s instructions. Otherwise, Adam would definitely die, and even though she didn’t trust Mother White enough to keep her word and not shoot him anyway, this was the only chance she had of him making it.Overhead, she heard a voice say, “Five minutes until evacuation.” The robotic female voice made her wonder if that meant that the other Mothers had already started to leave the facility. If that were the case, the Quebecian forces would be able to pour into the cente

Chapter 146
Listening to the motorcycle speed away from her, Rain took careful aim at the tree across the wooded area from her. She could see the form of the sniper sitting on a high branch. Her dark brown uniform didn’t blend in well with the green leaves.Rain supposed her black uniform didn’t disappear while she was standing next to the tree either. She pulled the trigger on her gun several times, hoping to distract the Mother long enough that Adam could get out of her range. The Mother shot back at Rain. She ducked around the back of the tree and came out the other side, keeping most of her body behind the slender trunk as she squeezed the trigger a few more times. More fire came her way, but the sound of the motorcycle had faded. Adam had to have been out of range.Rain also realized that the five-minute countd

Chapter 147
The building was definitely coming down around her. Rain could feel the floor shaking as the ceiling fell down around her. Covering her face with one hand as the smoke choked her lungs, and keeping the other hand over her head in a futile attempt to keep the bigger chunks of ceiling from hitting her on the top of the head and potentially unconscious, or at the very least, cutting her head open.“Mist!” she shouted as she ran along. The lights had gone out, but she could still see where she was headed because of the fire raging up ahead and around the corner. The orange glow was bright enough for her to make out the larger debris on the floor--and the bodies. So many bodies littered the ground. Many of them were wearing the brown uniforms of the Mothers. Occasionally, she’d see a black uniform. She’d check to make sure it wasn’t Mis

Chapter 148
Where the hell had she gone?Adam had ridden the motorbike back to camp to deliver the message to the commanders. Luckily, he’d found one fairly quickly upon reaching the forest. He’d told the man, Lt. Brason, what Mother White had told them and then handed over the thumb drive. The commander had attempted to tell Adam to stay there, that he was done, and while it would’ve been a relief to go find his tent and take a nap, Adam couldn’t possibly do that. He wouldn’t be able to rest until he was certain that Rain and the others were back in camp safely. He had immediately turned the bike around and sped back toward the medical center. Even before the building came into view, he saw soldiers running from that direction. That let him know that Lt. Brason and the others had taken him seriously and were in the process of evacuating the b

Chapter 149
The sensation that she’d been moving had jarred Rain awake for a few moments, but she hadn’t been able to open her eyes, and then, she’d suddenly been aware of the fact that she wasn’t quite as hot, and the air that she was sucking into her lungs wasn’t burning her from the inside out anymore. But she had failed at opening her eyes, so she had no idea what the situation was. The thought that she could’ve died and was now in whatever world came beyond this one had crossed her mind. She didn’t believe that The Bridge was a way to start one’s life over, but she did think there had to be something after life as they knew it.She certainly believed in death.People shouting to one another registered in her mind as she tried to open her eyes again. She could feel something s
