Thirty One: Competition Night
She turned her closet inside out to find the right outfit for the occasion. Jan was on the other side of the video call rolling her eyes dozens of times, shaking her head, telling her over and over again that the oversized white Tee-Shirt she wanted to wear was not a good choice. But she really wanted to wear it. It was her favorite. It was Lee's that she had traded with her favorite bucket hat. "No ... you look like you're wearing your brother's shirt that's too big for you ... just wear that knitted crop sweater over your outfit, the one with mixed color," she knew literally everything Hazel had in her closet. "This one?" she showed it to the camera. "Yeah ... try that one ..."

Thirty Three: The Car Ride Home
"Are you okay?" he stopped mid-sentence to check on Hazel. She was unusually quiet after they said their goodbyes to everyone at the competition and got into his car. He'd been talking most of the way, she only smile halfheartedly and nodded along to what he said. "Yeah, fine, why do you ask?" she had been looking out the window with the whole world in her mind. "Nothing, you've been so quiet ... it's not like you," he laughed softly. "Oh I was just thinking about ... Mischa ... " she was surprised of her own answer. "What about her?" Yeah, what about her, Hazel? She paused for a moment. "She's won

Thirty Four: Prom
He'd been waiting at her porch for forty-five minutes, an additional forty-five minutes on top of the hour he had waited in his own house before he left. She said she was almost ready, so he got into his car and drove to Peyton's house. It took her an hour or so to get ready every time they go out. He should've know Prom would take at least twice as long. He held the white corsage that Peyton had specifically chosen for him to bring because it will match her dress. His face was stiff from smiling too long while chit-chatting with her mom. Even her mom finally gave up the small talk and asked him to wait in the living room but he declined. When the front door finally opened. She emerged like an angel descending from the sky in her pink champagne dress. Her long blonde hair fe

Thirty Five: Disastrous Night
"Let's just go home, Peyton ... I'll take you home," he pleads to her outside the venue. "How could you do this to me? How could you've ruined Prom night for me?" she was bursting with tears. "I'm sorry ... okay, I didn't mean to, I couldn't stop thinking about those tickets ... I mean how could you have done something like that?" "No! How could you have done something like that? How could you have these feelings for someone else and stayed with me ... was it even real? Were you just pretending to love me? Do you know how much it hurts to know this?" Her eye make-up was starting to wear off with her tears. He covered his face and grunted, "I did ... I loved you, it was real ... there's no easy way to say this, Peyto

Thirty Six: Home Alone
Claire had left the fridge filled with ready to microwaved packets of food, milk, bread, cereals, eggs, and the stock cabinet with enough canned food for the apocalypse. She had left the list of important numbers to call, she re-stocked the first aid kit box with medicine, bandages like a mini-hospital storage room. She left some money, her credit card number in case Hazel run out of food and wanted to order takeaway. She left her with a five-page rule of what to do and not to do while they were gone. "No boys," Claire repeated it at least a dozen times before she left. "But Lee ..." "No boys, I don't care if it's Lee," Claire said. "Or Theo," Max jumped in

Thirty Seven: Let's Hang Out
She strapped the seat belt around her on the front seat, she studied his face from the side, "What's the occasion?" He started driving with the roof down and shrugged, "Do we need an occasion? Let's just celebrate ... let's hang out and have fun." He was a free man, he thought. He was single, he's got nowhere to go, his best friend is out of town and God help him he really tried but his best friend's sister was the only one he could think about. He thought he would drink himself to sleep that night, but the more he drank, the more he wanted to see her. So he drove himself to her house before he had too much to drink. His glassy eyes were a little droopy but he was sober enough to drive. "Have you been drinking?" Haz

Thirty Eight: Keeping Secrets
He opened another can of beer as soon as they got into the car. Hazel took one for herself and started drinking like she was dehydrated. They toasted their cans and he started driving.   "Why did you say Max was going to kill you?" she was curious.   He hesitated, her question reminded him that he had betrayed his best friend's trust to stay away from his sister. But then his request was vague, he didn't say they couldn't have a friendly night out together.   He tilted his shoulder, "Because I just took you out of your house to buy some beers in the middle of the night." He laughed softly, "You wouldn't believe how protective he is of you if I told you."   He glanced at her for a second. She was viciously finishing

She had her arm linked around his all night, she introduced him to everyone as if he was her boyfriend which made Lee uncomfortable. He put a friendly smile on his face even though the only place he wanted to be was with Hazel. Forty: Three Is A Crowd
Nothing was wrong. Except for the fact Hazel wasn't actually home. She was on the side of an empty street by an empty park in the middle of the night ... with Theo. When she insisted she couldn't leave the house to come with him to Mischa's party. He hung up the phone and threw it on the passenger's seat. He stepped on the gas even deeper and it was not because he wanted to get to her faster. What's worse, when he arrived, they were both drunk. Theo was sitting back in the driver's seat with Hazel on the passenger seat. Their feet were up on the dashboard and he could hear their laughter from where he parked. Hazel was in her pajama pants, her face was flushed like a ripe tomato. Theo's eyes were barely opened, his speech was slurred. They both had beer cans on their hands a
