Chapter 31
Emiliana Exhaustion consumed me like a heavy blanket by the end of the day. I had been staring at figures, meeting with each department and talking to managers all day. My feet ached, my throat was raw and scratched and my head pounded. I slumped down on the couch in my office, racking my brain for some kind of resolution to my problem. A light knock on the door startled me and before I had time to respond Giovanni had opened the door. His emerald gaze held mine for a moment, it was a look I knew too well. It was time to go home. I didn’t even have the energy to comment on Giovanni’s attempted joke that morning as we stepped out onto the New York streets. The whirling cold air whipped and lashed at my face as I struggled to walk through the impending storm approaching.

Chapter 32
Emiliana After the earlier phone call with Luciano, I had no energy to face the outside world, let alone jump in the shower. All I wanted was to go back to bed. The constant anxiety blended with frustration and exhaustion was beginning to make me sick and I couldn’t afford that at this point.I had dropped Oli a message asking to cancel on the off chance I could repair some of my disturbed sleep but he insisted on coming over and bringing lunch with him.“I can’t believe you!” Oli slammed his mug down on the table. “Hooking up with…” He glanced behind him, checking he wasn’t being listened to before mouthing “the help.”“Oli, he isn’t ‘the help’.” I shook my head. I h

Chapter 33
Emiliana The sound of Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ played loudly in the background as I sat with a loaded plate of toast and sipped my coffee. I was feeling one hundred times better after the last few days, resigning to the fact that I needed a break. The last few months were a collision course of paperwork, meetings and overwhelming stress. I had been so consumed with everything that I hadn’t taken a moment for myself and being thrown into this world had taken its effect on me.Giovanni smiled briefly at me, stepping into the kitchen with my belongings in his grasp. “Is it time to go already?” I asked brightly and rhetorically. Giovanni had returned to providing me with his silent company. His complexity was confusing m

Chapter 34
Emiliana I paced nervously back and forth in my bedroom. Luciano was taking me out and I was still figuring out what to wear. I owned millions of dresses, outfits, and various garments but as usual, I couldn’t find the right one. The bedroom was in a complete state of disarray. Clothes were sprawled out, jewelry overlapped and intertwined through the material as I tried to make and head and tail of my current situation. I finally opted for a simple black bandage dress. Stitched fabric with a matching stitched geometric design. The inch-wide straps crossed over my back, accentuating my bust slightly but hugging my curves perfectly. I felt the lingering eyes penetrate my back as I gazed at myself approvingly in the mirror. Turning to m

Chapter 35
Emiliana   Nerves wracked through me as Luciano tangled his fingers with mine. We waltzed through the foyer, giving a brief amicable nod to the desk clerk who was examining the security screens in front of him.  The elevator doors opened with a loud ping and I swiped my card against the keypad, before punching in the floor number and pin code for the penthouse.  We were standing in the elevator, travelling towards my apartment. My stomach somersaulted with butterflies, a mixture of nervousness and apprehension lashed at me as we approached it.   Luciano slung his suit jacket over his shoulder, an air of subtle confidence and arrogance enveloped him as we stepped out of the elevator. While his striking looks and mouth watering tan w

Chapter 36
Giovanni “Good morning,” Emiliana’s cheery voice echoed through the kitchen as she made her coffee. With a stoic expression, I kept my eyes trained on the newspaper in front of me. I felt her presence close in on me and I heard the deep breath she took as she took a seat opposite me.“Where did you go last night?” There was concern etched in her face as she asked. I locked eyes with her stunning hazel ones, refusing to open my mouth. The truth was I was searching for answers and I couldn’t be around either of them when I was doing it nor could I tell them what I was up to. Plus the fact I knew Luciano had dug his claws into her and would have wanted to come back here. I couldn't be around for that. I didn't want to hear her with someone else.Emiliana sipped her coff

Chapter 37
Emiliana I stared down at the city below me, we whizzed past the skyscrapers, almost touching the clouds above. The loud sound of the helicopter’s engines made talking almost impossible. While I had been in private jets more times than I could count, the helicopter ride that Luciano had organised was exhilarating and left me a jittering mess.Luciano had wined and dined me for the past month, staying at mine more times than I could count. This was the first time I would be visiting his own place and I was in absolute awe.The aircraft landed with a soft thud on the grass below us and when I finally looked out of the window, we were situated outside a large mansion. From the outside, it looked like an extended version of the White House. Complete

Chapter 38
Emiliana It was late in the evening, dinner had finished and we had taken a walk through the dimly lit gardens. The hedges that lined the paths were pruned to perfection, not a leaf was out of place. The atmosphere was still a little tense between us and I was impatiently waiting for Luciano to apologise for his behaviour earlier. The air remained frigid and cold as we strolled hand in hand, my shoulders shivered, bare to the bitter breeze that stroked over my skin. I was beginning to feel the setting chill in my bones and much to Luciano’s annoyance, I had asked to return to the mansion.“You don’t need a bodyguard. You have me.” Luciano voiced his thoughts with conviction as he pulled the sheets back from the bed. “It’s what my father wants.” I replied,

Chapter 39
Giovanni   The hollow darkness of my room had kept me awake the whole weekend. To say I was tired was an understatement. I lay on my back, staring at the drapes above me. The whole place reeked of bad money, if there was ever such a thing.  A soft tapping on my door broke me from my sleepless slumber.  “Gio,” the gentle voice called out to me before I heard the gentle sniff. I stepped carefully towards the door, my hand poised on my gun that was holstered inside my coat hanging beside it.  The soft tapping echoed again, this time more urgent. I pulled it open smoothly, the stream of light from the hallway blinding me momentarily.  Emiliana pushed her way into the room pacing back and fort

Chapter 40
Emiliana I examined my face in the mirror. The scarlet handprint was no longer visible, but the ghost sensation that it was still there tingled under my touch. I stroked my hand down my neck, the bruises stung under my fingertips matching the foolishness that coursed through my body. An almost perfect hand shape marked my skin, purple circles where Luciano’s fingers dug and squeezed the air from my throat and cut off my connection to oxygen. The memory came flooding back at full force. While it had only been less than twelve hours, I was still a shaky mess and only Giovanni had managed to be my anchor.Fear and embarrassment were at the full front of the wrath, attacking me as it went to war with my sensibility. I should have listened to Giova
