Max then waited for the DA to come out, and he chuckled as he looked at the younger man. “You seem like you have been waiting for this, son.”“I have waited for this moment since the beginning of the case,” Max said. “But I always do. I look forward to knowing I began this with one thing, and I helped speak for the dead as well. I just want the case closed like I do for every one of them.”“No personal issues?” The DA asked as he looked at Max. “I just have to make sure.”“In the beginning, there was maybe,” Max said as he thought back to the beginning of the case. “I then began to focus on the facts, and I was able to let go of the past that I held on to. I feel sorry for the victim. I had a small interaction with all these people, but she had to live her entire life with all thi

Max sat in front of his computer the next two days, debating on how much he wanted to put into the next school year. He looked around the office that he had for the past four years. It was still full of his stacks of paper. He didn’t know what to do with them. He didn’t even know how he was going to keep up with the changes in the way they did things and how to teach them with the restrictions of his classes. He got up and knew that he had to go to the staff meeting where he was meeting with the dean’s afterward to go over the changes in a lot of the classes. He walked into the room, and all the other professors were there already. He looked around and found an empty seat. He went to it and sat down. “That case you worked on over the summer.” Someone said, “It was so interesting.” “I can’t talk about an ongoing case,” Max said with a s

“Well, Anderson, your course is safe for the moment, but we did have to allocate most of the funds to the harder sciences.” The Dean of the department said as she looked at Max. “I figured,” Max said with a chuckle. “So, I can continue with the course as it is designed?” “Of course.” The two men said at the same time. “However, I do have to suggest that you open your office hours a few more days a week, and also if a student comes to you for help that you offer it.” The dean of the department said. Max knew that was him telling Max he needed to make sure that he made the department look really good. He was again just a pawn for another man’s career. In this case, he didn’t mind too much though he didn’t think that any student would ever come to him unless it was a last-ditch effort. He smiled at the two men. “Of course, I will do whatever is

“Good morning, class,” Max said as he stood in front of his new class. “This year, we will be learning the ways of how to use your deduction skill as a detective and all touch on all the things that the average person in the field has to do and know.” “Professor Anderson, you’re the one involved in that huge case in midlands, aren’t you?” A girl asked from the front row of the class. “I am involved with that case,” Max said. “You will find that I do not talk about cases specifically in this class. Though I may use past cases as examples sometimes. But speaking of that case. There will come a time that I will have to be out of the classroom and office hours for a little bit of time. The case will become my priority when it goes to trial. A successful trial will mean I did my job well.” “Is that what you want to do for t

The next month went by as he noticed that he had not heard anything but the normal files coming from the station house. He had not heard about the case at all. He wondered if something happened that bombed the entire case. Though he wasn’t brave enough to call and ask. He just turned in his paperwork every weekend when he went into his office to check on things. At school, he was well known as the person who the students never went to for extra help unless they really needed it. He actually didn’t mind that. He was pretty happy except for the case continuing to be hung over him. He went to all of his classes and fended off a few overzealous females a few times. He began to wonder if he would ever really be free. He knew that he had to finally break down and ask ab

After another few weeks, he got the call he had been waiting for. He knew it was coming. “We have the date.” The DA said into the phone, and Max felt a rush of everything going through him again. He knew he had to push that all aside. “Okay,” Max said. “When?” “In three weeks. The two are scheduled back to back. The father goes first. Then the mother. We will go over some of the changes in the cases and the charges before. We will need you in for prepping and debriefing a few days before.” The DA said. “I am a hundred percent confident in our case now. We found even more evidence of the guilt in both parties.” “Good,” Max said as he began to mentally plan for everything with the class. He had so much time to get ready for this, but he didn’t want to really. He had been waiting for the final words so he could begin to get ready. Now he was faced with the idea he was going o be in co

He had everything for the classes he was gone for set up. All that had to be done was the students had to watch the video he posted to YouTube. Then they had their assignments to be written and emailed to him. This was the best way to handle everything. The kids seemed to enjoy the fact they would not have him in class for a few weeks. He went over to Mack and Henni’s house the night before they began heavily prepping for the trial. He needed one night without thinking about anything but the future. He smiled as he got there because it was one of the little monsters birthday’s the entire group was going to be there. He smiled as he got there, and Mack clapped him on the back. “Almost ready for this?” Mack asked. “The party or the trial,” Max asked as he looked at the other man. “Right now, the party,” Mack said. “The trial can wait. But there is a surprise that you will find out about.”

When Max walked into the room, he knew he was in for it. The mock courtroom was in front of him. The evidence, including his boards, was in there. It was almost a welcome sight for him. He hadn’t been on the stand in a while, and he was feeling it. “Ready, Detective?” the DA asked as he saw Max enter. “Yes,” Max said as he went to his seat and waited as they started to go over the way the case changed a bit. They had a folder for him as they went over everything. They were going to go over every single piece of evidence that Max had uncovered, and then he would be questioned a few different times to make sure he was ready. The trial was in less than a week. He was ready to get this over. At least the first one would be. That wasn’t all that hard for him to think about. The trials were going o be back to back, so everyt

Three weeks passed, and he had been in the courthouse twice. Both times he had given his testimony, and on cross-examination, he had been hammered on the stand. It was just like he thought it would be. They tried like hell to tear his character and his professionalism apart. Neither time was successful, though. Max did not do what they had expected him to do and lose his cool on the stand. He had not shown an ounce of emotion. Instead, he responded with more professionalism than the lawyers for the defense had. It was remarked on many times. The first trial had only been a week long. Philip had tried to testify on his own behalf, and that was his major downfall. The things that the defense had got excluded from the trial were able to be brought up because of the man’s own hubris. He boasted about things on the stand that people had to wonder if he was healthy mentally or not. The jury had only been out for a day when they came back and r

Three days back in the office and he had not heard anything about the case. He expected the verdict any minute now. Though he knew that it would be a few after it was read. An hour after he finished his class, he was back in the office, going over the papers in front of him. He had stacks of them everywhere. They were the first assignment for the different classes he had. He still thought he would be able to read them at some point, but he was never all that surprised that he couldn’t. It was really only two weeks into the semester, and he already could see the headaches happening. That was when his cell phone went off. He looked at the number, and he knew. “Anderson.” He answered it. There was a pause. “It came back guilty on all counts.” The DA stated, and then Max could feel like he was light as air. He knew that it was finally over. “It is done.”
