Chapter Twenty-One
The muffled sounds of voices coming from the main room of the house slowly roused me from my slumber.  I reached for Noah, but his side of the mattress was empty and cold.Taking a few minutes to gather my wits about me, I swung my legs to the side of the bed and then padded my way to the ensuite bathroom.  After inserting the last of the medication that Dr. Blake provided, I closed my eyes so that I could concentrate on assessing the condition of my body.  I felt pretty good.  All that remained was a mild soreness in my ribcage which I expected that a few more days would see an end to.  During my examination, the doctor declared that there was only a hairline fracture in my rib and that it should heal quickly.  Considering the loud crack that I’d heard when that beast fell upon me, I’d experienced doubts about the validity of that claim.  I was happy to discover that he was right.Feeling refreshed and encouraged, I hurri

Chapter Twenty-Two
“Well, well,” Oscar bellowed as he and Kenzie entered the room.  “I see you called in the troops, brother.  William and Joseph are keeping guard outside.  They said that they saw signs of Snow’s hunting.  I was wondering when you were going to send him off to tend to his needs.”  Turning to Danica, his jovial attitude went sour as he said, “Hello, pain in my ass.”“Hello, shit face,” she replied with what I can only describe as an evil sneer.Kenzie and I simultaneously looked from Danica to Oscar.  Their tone of voice and expressions hinted of an interesting story. Curious, but knowing better than to question anyone about their unusual greeting just then, Kenzie stepped forward.“I’m Kenzie,” my friend said as she offered her hand to Danica. “The human,” Danica grumbled as she rejected Kenzie’s hand and walked into the kitchen wit

Chapter Twenty-Three
Kenzie and I sat on the front porch while we watched the sun slowly ease its way behind the trees.“The moon will be full again tonight,” she mused.  “I reckon we’ll see the turning in about four hours.”“How did you know that you had the right to cut off her head?” I asked as I vigorously rocked in the Adirondack styled rocking chair. “No one was going to stop you.”“I know,” she said with a sigh.  “I sometimes lose it when I’m around bitches like her.  It stems from my high school days.  I wasn’t a beauty, as you well can see, and I was picked on quite a bit by the popular girls.”“I think you’re beautiful,” I said in earnest. “So does Oscar.”She gave me an affectionate smile.“I’ve got a long way to go to be in your category of looks, but I will admit that I’ve grown into myself,&rd

Chapter Twenty-Four
I was both disgusted and frustrated.A week earlier I had no idea that werewolves existed anywhere but in fairy tales, books, and movies. Suddenly, not only were they real, but they existed below our social radar in a world of their own with rules of their own.  By some sick twist of fate, I’d fallen into this underground reality and was forced to deal with the fact that I’d never be free of it. If I wanted some semblance of normality to return, I had no other option than to give in and find someone to mate with.  Then, I’d be able to go home and resume a life of writing books and enjoying small town living.Sadly, the thought of committing myself to a man simply to be able to lead a normal life was overwhelmingly oppressive.  This was especially hard hitting because the man wouldn’t be Noah.I longed for the same joy that my friend Kenzie was experiencing.  Hers came from years of devoted friendship that

Chapter Twenty-Five
The pack’s howling faded into the distance, but there was still an odd, almost creepy feel in the air.  I mentioned it to Kenzie and she readily agreed.“I don’t know if they’ll be coming back like they did last night,” she nervously said.  “Oscar hinted about the need to keep Danica busy so that she couldn’t circle back and cause us harm.”“That’s just dandy,” I hissed.  “What if someone from another pack shows up like they did last night?  What do we do then?”“I asked him that very same question,” she admitted.“And?” I said and then waited with eager silence to hear his solution. She shrugged as she informed me that Noah was posting his most loyal men around the perimeter of the land to keep watch for invaders.“Will that be enough?” I asked.  “What if someone slips past them? After all, from wh

Because I passed on shifting my energy frequency to see him, I was able to engage in conversation with my great, great, great grandfather for the majority of the evening.  With Kenzie just as interested in learning about my ancestry as I was, the time was filled with questions as it passed without us feeling it.We saw no sign of Noah, Oscar, or any of the pack. Logan checked with the people on his side of the veil and was told that a few of Noah’s most trustworthy pack members were standing watch on the perimeter.  The rest of the pack was far off on the other side of the mountain hunting.A way to divert Danica’s attention, no doubt. With only a few hours left before the moon and the sun traded places, Kenzie and I were  feeling pretty relaxed and content. Because of this, it took a moment for the sound of someone walking about upstairs to register with us.Kenzie’s eyes went wide when it suddenly struck her that the hou

It was cold, dark, and dank inside the cave.  Neither of us had on adequate coverings for such an environment.  We couldn’t have been inside it for more than a few minutes before our bodies felt the full impact of the cold.“I can’t stop my teeth from chattering,” I complained, “It’s like my body has a mind of its own.”“Huddle close to me,” she stuttered past teeth that were behaving the same as mine. “If we share our body heat, we might be able to get it under control.”  After I snuggled into her so close that my only other option would have been to climb beneath her skin, she added, “I didn’t realize how damp it was in here.  I was properly dressed when I found it.”“Did you come in?” I asked.“I hid from a bear for about thirty minutes,” she replied.“A bear?” I gasped.  “There are bears in these

Having spent the night awake with my great, great, great, great grandfather’s ghost before running for safety from abductors, I was in dire need of sleep.  Since it was daylight and Danica was refusing to leave, I was given the guest room with the assurance that I would be guarded at all times.  My lucky friend, Kenzie, went off with Oscar.  I wasn’t sure, but I assumed they went to one of their homes.“So, even though the full moon is passing, I’m still in danger.  Is that what you’re saying?” I bitterly asked as I listened to Noah’s offering of the guest room.  “Is there no end to this nightmare?”He looked at the floor.“I wish I could say differently,” he replied.“I can’t stay with you forever,” I grumbled as I allowed him to escort me into the room.  Standing at the door, I turned to look at him which prevented him from entering behind m

Chapter Twenty-Nine
We lay, peacefully, in each other’s arms after making love into the night.  As I listened to the steady beating of his heart while he slept, I wondered if the fact that he’d been such a powerfully virile lover was due to his recent shift from being a werewolf or if it was something that I’d have to look forward to on a regular basis.  I hoped it was the latter.I have no idea how long I reveled in sheer ecstasy over finally getting him to want me before I fell into a deep, dream filled slumber.I rarely remembered my dreams, but this time it was so vivid that it seemed real.I stood in the middle of a sea of wildflowers with scents that were both intoxicating and alluring. Closing my eyes, I inhaled through my nose until my lungs could hold no more.  Feeling delightfully heady from nature’s sweet floral bouquet, I slowly and reluctantly exhaled. When I opened my eyes, a tall, rugged middle-aged highlande

Oscar and Kenzie had arrived by the time I was dressed and out of the bedroom. Eager to share my joy with my friend, I entered the living room with a broad smile on my face.  It quickly dissipated when my eyes landed on Danica snuggling close to Noah as if they were the couple of the century. Not knowing what to do, I stopped in my tracks and gave him a what the hell? glower.  To my shock and disappointment, he worriedly pursed his lips and looked away.I wanted to fade into nothingness.  I worried that the fact that I’d been used as a sex object throughout the night and into the morning had become common knowledge. Although I didn’t want anyone to know, I especially worried about Danica finding out.  What a feather in her mean girl cap that would be.I felt used and cheap.Kenzie moved close to me and asked in a soft tone, “What’s the matter?”I forced a smile as I replied, “Nothing.
