I strolled along the gravel road and toward the dock along the lake. The sun was heavy in the sky. Morning light flickered on the water. There, silhouetted against the glow of the early morning, sat Leo Ford, sipping his coffee slowly. He seemed impossibly at ease, the wind barely disturbing his hair, his shoulders loose. But when at last he looked up and caught sight of me, the relaxed way he sat disappeared like morning mist in the sun. His spine stiffened, and his smile hardened to a stiffness, freezing into a mask of unhappiness. All warmth left his eyes and became a wary chill.
